Janet Jackson Appreciation Thread

She was pushed into music in her teens when she had cultivated a following from her time on Good Tims, Different Strokes, and Fame.

I wish she could summon the 19 year old of Control back...she's still within Janet.

She needs to do music on terms and not let anyone dictate what she needs to do.

I don't agree with this. Even Janet trashed Madonna about being too sexual in 93/94. Madonna was ripped apart during the sex book era. In fact she was called a slut and whore and the queen of sleaze right from the start. Her biggest gripe with Janet/Whitney/Mariah was that they played it safe and they were being rewarded for being "good girls" and she was being punished for being the "slut". I think that is why there has always been friction between her and other women in the industry. In 1985 she said she reached out to Cyndi Lauper and was hurt when she wanted nothing to do with her, The Go Go's and other women in the field all turned their back on her in 84/85 and called her "a big step back for women". Whitney said she would kill her daughter if she turned out like Madonna. Janet said she was pathetic for being so overly sexual.

Hell she even got ripped for showing her belly button.

She was famously on the cover of the New York Post with the headline "WHAT A TRAMP" No one defended her or called the paper out for it.

Prince was extremely sexual in his act and never copped what she did. Yes there is a racist component, but it is the exact opposite. I think white conservative America expected what they saw as hedonism and amoral behaviour from people of colour, as they always saw those artists as "savages" Look at Jean-Michel Basquiat- always being described as primal/savage/primitive. White conservatives were outraged that a white mid western girl was in any way similar.

The big difference is Madonna published a book bound in mylar and only available to over 18's in a store and Janet had her moment (staged or not) during a family broadcast that attracts a ton of conservatives. It was never going to turn out well and it isn't the same.

But Madonna too was blacklisted after she was critical of Bush and the Iraq war. Her career basically ended in the US after that. Radio wouldn't touch. When Hung Up came out and went #1 everywhere around the world except the US, Billboard realised radio wouldn't play the track - they asked a bunch of programmers why - they called her euro trash and un-American.

The biggest issue with the Superbowl hoopla was the fact that Clear Channel is involved with it and it majorly pissed them off, so she pretty much got instantly blacklisted on major radio stations. When the dust started to settle a bit there was also the age factor that was starting to creep in - quite simply no hits in a while + over 40 = radio isn't going to play you.

Not sure, never have been sure, though I don't think it matters if she did or not, I was not making any definitive statement about it. Even if she did - the punishment was not deserved. She didn't show her nipple, it was covered up, I don't get why it was ever an issue, except that conservatives were always like this. They could only punish Madonna so much for publishing a book that minors couldn't get their hands on, but they could accuse Janet of corrupting the youth of America. It was purantism

Yeah I agree. I think I was more annoyed that people seem to think M was just having some great old time selling sex and being rewarded all these years and it wasn't like that at all.

Not wanting to get into comparisons, but there is a brutal history of both hypersexualization of Black girls and women, while simultaneously punishing Black women who do have the temerity to take ownership of their own sexuality in a way that does not happen with other women.

It just doesn't.

So, you can have something as a blink and you miss it moment of a breast that hardly anyone even saw until the media decided to replay the instance over and over incur the wrath of a head of a network for at least a full decade.

Also, those who watched the documentary know that the Superbowl was not the only incident of a corporation taking putative measures for something associated with the actions of someone else. Up thread, I mentioned what happened with Coca-Cola.

But I do think the more mainstream success one has the more one is able to get away with. In that case, Janet did not have that prolonged amount of mainstream success. I don't know what Black women has that. Beyonce? Eventually "they" came for her too by the time of  Formation. Things have changed since then and fortunately, Beyonce could not have cared less.

And feminism within the U.S. has historically left out, diminished or flat out ignored the struggles of Black women.

Janet did well with "Made For Now" and that's what spurred a bit of a resurgence beyond the more loyal audience. It wasn't her umpteenth song about fùcking and it wasn't something we'd all heard before from her. I don't think she's going to turn back into 90s Janet the hitmaker but I do think she can continue to build off the recent energy and appreciation and put out at least one more pretty solid album. I liked some of Unbreakable more than anything since the '90s - there were a fair amount of hit singles in the 2000s but I didn't think the overall albums worked.

Madonna def went through it in the mid-90s and there was a time I thought she had gone too far for people and was done. Evita and Ray of Light were her massive comeback. But Janet has never had a comeback of that magnitude or global impact - Madonna went from being persona non grata for awhile to being the biggest star on the planet again; that's never happened for Janet. And nothing Madonna has experienced since (including any anti-Bush critique in the 2000s, which lots of artists did at the time and the Dixie Chicks got way, way more heat than her) is remotely comparable to how much Janet fell off in the same period with the media, the public and critically. American Life didn't work because it was a bad album, and Confessions was a hit. Janet would've killed for either of those sales or attention, and she didn't get it because there is a different standard for her than for Madonna.

She should absolutely work with both.

Damita Jo still went platinum in the US which is what Confessions did in 2005, 20 Y.O went Gold in the US and so did Hard Candy in 2008.

I think the difference is Janet was still in her prime (even though I didn't like her music) She should have sold more. At least for those two albums and especially in the US.

I think the other major difference was Les Moonves and the corporations that basically wanted to bury Janet, and that is where the racism did come in. I don't think Madonna would have suffered in that way. She was blacklisted from radio but then so were the Dixie Chics - but that was political conservatism and not race related in anyway.

Janet was punished in an extreme way - she should have never been punished at all, she did nothing wrong (accident or not)

I guess what I am saying is M was punished for the things she did - that doesn't negate the racism, especially towards black women that has and still does happen. My initial statements were not taking that into account. It was a fan defending M, not me trying to say because she  was treated badly that racism isn't a factor for women like Janet or that M suffers in the exact same way.

I am not American, but nor am I white and I know the racism of my country and what has happened to the women in my family. What they fought for and how they have been treated.

One consistent critique of the documentary is that it was it didn't delve deeply enough (another complaint this is somewhat tangential is that the doc was too short) but Janet Jackson has always been somewhat of a mysterious woman, perhaps the result of being from a famous family that has been in the spotlight since she was a very young child. She was never going to give viewers everything. How exactly do people think she was able to keep a nearly decade old marriage a secret in front of the eyes of the world?

The New York Times Arts section does call Janet "an astonishingly modern pop superstar" which actually sounds accurate.

And this is where the line is and should be drawn between Women of Color and Black Women. I realize that not everyone's struggles are the same but Black women in the United States have a profoundly different experience worldwide and in the United States. Black women were the only women brought to the Americas in chains and bred for commerce. The vestiges of that history are still reverberating to this day and neither money nor education nor class has allowed escape this reality. My mother, my aunts have experienced this, I have experienced this, which is why I recognize things for how they truly are.

    • I'm not at all surprised the 10 lowest-rated episodes are all from Season Seven. Moving The Golden Girls from 9 p.m. to 8 p.m. was foolish.
    • As the folklore goes, Love Boat episodes generally had one "heart" story, one "laughs" story, and one "tears" story. I guess Hotel just stuck with "heart" and "tears."
    • I thought food poisoning was an odd reason for Vanessa to miss the party.  That's why I appreciate reading everyone's comments and theories on this thread.  Oh!!  It hadn't occurred to me to speculate that she might be pregnant. I figured that she and Doug ate different things.  But pregnancy fits better.  I did think Shanice's dialogue delivery was slightly awkward (unusual for her)... but that would make sense if Shanice knew Vanessa had a pregnancy test but Vanessa said don't tell Doug.  I love all this theorizing/speculating, especially since we have no idea what will happen.
    • I want that as well, but given how much I've been playing catch-up during some personal/family drama, it's been background music with very little to hold my interest. Then I saw a spoiler and rolled my eyes.   Very. I guess JG is hitting another of his low points.
    • Well...unexpected wiggle room is still wiggle room.   I went back and finally rewatched Friday's episode (along with Thursday's). And God, how those episodes flowed. It did help that Zimmerman did the breakdowns for both so the plot threads were cohesive. I do wonder if she did it today as well. Martin and Tate also of course did good scripts. And I might have to take back my earlier comment about the crowd. While it was not like Nicole's Award Event where I felt there were more extras (and was in the minority on that), I felt this one did not have enough (also in the minority). But on a rewatch, I did like that Production actually did a fairly decent job of covering it up so kudos.    I also wanted to take the moment to say the majority of the week before last (and this past week) were full of cliffhangers. Perhaps not what is used to, but they were there. And I loved that since the majority of said cliffhangers were connected to Silk Press Sheila, it gave an intensity and build to the last week leading to this superb episode that gave us not only an old school soap reveal (complete with moments to let the scenes breathe, but annoyed in how other scenes which were also good did not compare...another sign of knowing when a reveal is great) but, THREE cliffhangers!!! Well-done, Cliffhanger Friday!!!   Ms. Mann and Ms. Michelle were clearly the stars. I've said it once someone mentioned it and I'll say it again...Ambyr just gives so much SMG's version of Kendall on AMC in Eva, and I love that. And that reveal on Silk Press Sheila...WOW. Great to have confirmation that BILL was the lawyer. Even better to see Silk Press interacting with all of the Duprees and not being a bit scared. And yes, I caught that she was preggers at the same time as Nicole. I also caught in the Martin vs Ted scene when he was talking about the timeline was another clue...since we discussed the timeline during Kat's birthday party episodes and how odd it was that Silk Press Sheila would celebrate Eva's birthday if the weeks were off. UNLESS...they're not. I just feel they would not be mentioning it unless SilkPress has a 90s DAYS Sami Trump card incoming. And 90s DAYS Sami Brady ALWAYS had a trump card. So...looking forward to today. lol.    I'm also going to be in the minority about the next thought. I thought Maurice did a good job as Ted in the reveal scenes. Though I do agree that compared to everyone else...even his FOINE doctor friend...he was the weak leak. DD was giving and she was in the background reacting. The Avengers...I mean...the Duprees closing ranks...was great and also showed how in sync the actors were. Naomi being sure Chels was not filming THIS time was a hoot. And I lived for Kat's shade among the mess. I'm happy that we are here at this reveal with OriginalTed since the rumor (marking preemptions) we are a little under two weeks to go before he's out.   I liked the layers. One thing that I like about this show. We usually mention something here and then the show writers have it mentioned either in episode or immediately in the next. The SilkPress/Eva picture last week. Where is Naomi/Vanessa this week of episodes. And they got to it. Well-played. I also like the reveal that Martin knew SilkPress as a kid, calling back to that weird scene with the brownie. I mentioned the Bill-as-Lawyer scene, calling back to Bill/Vernon's first alone scene. The reveal of all of SilkPress's many names. The fact that Andre and Dani continue to grow closer and closer and had a near-miss...something this show knows how to do extremely well for me. Their near-misses built up the drama and story, and I see how much I'm invested when we have them. The whole Silk Press Sheila story being the best example.    I see from a few of the comments some of you all are already thinking about those consequences toward Bill that I was thinking about on Friday.

And while I did not like the Vanessa/Doug scenes at first view...though I love they followed up on her food poisoning phone call on Thursday...I liked it on second watch. Partly because it gave another hint that Doug has some idea of what Vanessa is doing...if not who.  Partly because I had assumed that Doug got poisoned, too. Seeing it was just Vanessa confused me since I thought they were out at dinner pre-party. That said...I go back to my original thought in that moment. Has Vanessa being having all this sex without protection and we are going to get a WTD with Doug, Diego, and whoever else she has been with? Uh oh?    And I continue to also love how flashbacks are used. Rare do they show a flashback to a prior episode unless it's important so those are well done. And then you have the flashbacks like the one with Bill/Dani that informs the audience. And I loved that green dress. But tbf, I loved the feistiness of her red dress. Andre was not alone in taking her in.    And someone mentioned it the other day and I wanted to echo it. One thing I like about this show that I don't see much in the other soaps to this degree has been that several of the characters have their own personal style for sure, but the men's style really have stood out for me since its started. Ted being a clear example with his turtlenecks and general...for lack of better word at the moment manly...to him. I like that about the men where other men styles on other soaps just blend together.    Looking forward to Kat v Eva, Anita vs Silk Press Sheila, and Nicole vs Ted today.    Did I mention I was happy Clifton was back?
    • I’ll take a pass on the lecture, because you've overestimated my concern with your feedback, but thanks for the enthusiasm. Your claims of not wanting to get into an argument over every post are unfortunately voided by your impulsive need to add into discussions that are none of your concern.
    • I guess it's because the stories on "Hotel" tended to be very...melodramatic, lol?  I mean, it seems like every episode had long-lost lovers reuniting or people finding out someone they knew and/or loved was dying.  And then there was the time Anne Baxter was strung out on dope, lol. Brandon Stoddard must've envied what the other Brandon (Tartikoff) was doing at NBC.
    • Given some of the things that have been said I am going to quote the preface to an analysis I researched & posted about the desired demos when JFP was EP of AW. And, that is more than enough about that, from me.
    • The thing that I am stuck on is that the in studio scenes in Egypt started airing in mid-October. It seems very strange that they would have planned to have a couple of weeks of studio scenes airing before they started showing location footage. Normally even though some scenes in a remote-infused storyline are in studio, they would start airing a mixture of studio and location footage at the same time. I suspect they had put Arizona in their back pocket well before the Achille Lauro (hence Hawk arriving in September) and possibly moved up the Egypt in-studio action so that the remote Arizona piece unfolded during November. The Achille Lauro may have been the final straw but I would bet it was not the first time they considered the risk. I have found one somewhat contemporaneous reference published on October 19th but pinned to an October 7th* "diary entry" mentioning that the location shoot in Egypt had been changed to Arizona. "International terrorism has its effect on daytime drama, too. Another World producers had scheduled an elaborate and expensive location shoot in Egypt this fall, But with the serious military attacks and hijackings going on, they decided to play it safe. They are going to Arizona instead. The cast members involved were disappointed but understood the decision." *Undated, but specified as the Monday before Melody Thomas's wedding to Ed Scott. But of course it's possible that the first draft referred to Egypt and was revised after October 7th to mention the cancellation before it went to press. But even making the decision the week of October 7th seems tight to get the Egypt scenes to air on the 17th/18th. I would love to find something from a daily news cycle that would be clearer about the dates.
    • So, Maxim, at this moment in time Evan is under the (mistaken) impression that, for no good reason, Rachel murdered his mother, in cold blood, and his ulterior motive for coming to Bay City is to get vengeance for this wrong that was done to his family & him.  Now, Rachel never murdered anyone. Janice had the knife on her & she pulled the knife on Rachel in the fight they were having. The reason they were fighting was because Janice had been poisoning Mac. So, this sets out the difference between the Frame family version of events & reality as the rest of us know it to be. Also no one in Bay City knows Evan is Janice's son. He goes by Evan Bates, not Frame.
