What storylines do you think soap operas would never do?

Ooh, just imagine if Terrence Frye's beating on ALL MY CHILDREN had been the result of police brutality.

I know OLTL had to abort a storyline about a school shooting because of the Virginia Tech shootings, but has any other soap in the U.S. even attempted to do a similar story?

No I don't think so. I know Degrassi did it several years ago, but that's Canadian

I wish they would, too.

Emmerdale did that story to near perfection with the character of Cameron Murray from fall 2012 through fall 2013. He was on the show almost a year and a half prior to that.

That would be interesting knowing who the serial killer is in the beginning, instead of how it's usually done

It's so sad that all these great suggestions for realistic storylines will never be done while stuff like cloning and un-abortions have been.

don't forget underground cities, time travel, and going to heaven and Hell. and we can't forget Erica Kane telling a real bear to not attack her.

Those stories they don't mind doing but real life stuff that they think is taboo they have a problem with. even suicide is rarely tackeled on soaps. Usually a hero will come in last minute to save the day. I think in all the years i've been reading up on soaps, i've only heard of one or two cases of follow through suicide.

Yeah, PASSIONS grew really wild toward the end.

Off the top of my head: a serial killer story where we know the killer's identity from the very beginning. And, of course, a love triangle involving a guy, a girl, and another guy or girl who is bisexual.

I've been wanting to do that for awhile. I had written it into the story ideas for my soap that will likely never see the light of day (A World Away), that I'd have twin brother and sister fall for the same bisexual male. I still say it would make for an amazing story, but I doubt any current soap would bite.

I have to think that the really weird and IMHO utterly tasteless stuff was when Passions was off network television and on DirecTV. I have to think that the NBC censors would have gotten involved, regardless of the ratings being in the tank.

Passions did a storyline with Chad, Whitney, and Vincent. It had incest and bisexuality.

that sh-t was disgusting! It ruined Whitney for me especially with her becoming a nun and abusing herself as some form of punishment for screwing her gay brother/husband and throwing her incest baby away

I'd love to see that storyline and they don't have to be twins just siblings in general

My wish is that GH does a story where Nathan is torn between Maxie and Lucas.

I never watched Passions but these storylines you guys are listing off make me go WTF big time. Some girl had a baby with her gay brother? WHY. The only thing from Passions I've ever seen was a youtube clip of the hermaphrodite character giving birth to his dad's baby. SMH

I'm guessing we'll never see an orgy on a soap.

I don't think soaps--well American soaps, would have the gall to do a real pedophile story involving a child being molested.

Soaps have done the "this character was molested as a child" stories, and AMC did a child porn story with Brooke, Laura and Jim Thomason in the 90s, although Laura was a teenager and not a young child. During AMC's story about Erica's rape, it was clearly established that her rapist was a pedophile who preyed on little girls, and during Erica's trial for stabbing Dimitri, a 12 year old girl accused him of rape and then killed herself. While Erica was on the stand reliving her rape, her rapist went after Bianca. The show deliberately left it vague as to exactly how far Richard Fields got before Kendall walked into the room and caught him, but Bianca's clothes were torn and she was obviously traumatized. TPTB stated at the time that there was no need to graphically portray a child being molested on the show because it would be cruel to a child actress, and the point could be made that this terrible thing was happening without actually showing a lot of detail. I'm okay with how it was portrayed, and I thought at the time that it was very well done. I still think it was a very compelling episode.

As far as a story in which a child is molested "in real time" with a pedophile grooming a child and then abuse continuing for weeks or months, no I don't think we'll see that, and I'm fine with that. It would be a horrible situation to put a child actor or actress in, and I think you'd lose a lot of your audience who watch soaps to be entertained. It's hard to argue that watching a child be repeatedly molested would be entertaining. Then, what do you do with that pedophile character? You can't make him (or her) too nice because your audience is going to demand that he (or she) be punished, and in soap world when your villain goes past the point of redemption, he's usually killed off. I've read and seen "A Time to Kill" [a book/movie about a man who kills the men who raped his little girl], but I don't think I'd want to watch that story unfold for months.

I have a feeling that many -- and when I say "many," I'm really talking about the majority -- that many of the ideas we suggest in this thread will be met with, "PASSIONS did that, too".

No one and nothing will ever come between Nathan and his true love, his baby oil.

also don't think they'll do a storyline where a major corporation goes belly up and the owners and their families lose EVERYTHING

Didn't that happen in the late 80s on AMC? Palmer announced at Adam's masquerade ball that he'd taken control of Chandler Enterprises, and Dixie got custody of baby JR back, and then Adam had a massive stroke and ended up in the hospital with Brooke paying his medical bills for him because he was flat broke. In the span of a single night, Adam lost his business, his wealth, custody of his child, and his health.
