February 2, 201412 yr Member DRW50, did you now that in it's original broadcast, The island of misfit toys were never mentioned again,. There were so many complaints about it, that a new scene was shot and included in the 1965 broadcast, and every broadcast ever since, where Santa goes tot he island of misfit toys and picks them up, to take them to children's homes. This made the show too long, so for the 1965 broadcast and all others since, a scene where Yukon Cornelius finally find his peppermint mine was excised to make room for it. Huh. I didn't know that. Thanks for telling me. I don't know how to feel about that. It's nice that people were worried about the toys, but another part of me wishes they could have just stayed where they were, happily. Then again they weren't happy, so I guess this was a better ending. Is the scene of Yukon finding the mine on Youtube? The scene where they pull that monster's teeth out and adopt him as a pet always makes me feel a little sad, for some reason. I always wished he would have become their friend without needing to be "tamed." Lots of adult messages in that special when you think about it.
February 2, 201412 yr Member Thanks. I think they made the right decision. I was reading about some scenes involving burning toys that they cut out of SCICTT on modern airings. I can see why, although sometimes I wish TV cared more about quality kids programming today and less about censoring the past.
February 2, 201412 yr Member I was always confused as to what the girl doll's reason was for being a misfit. I've learned a few times over the years but always forget.

There's been just speculation, as nothing was obvious about why she was a misfit. It's a subject that' been hotly debated by hard core fans for decades.
February 2, 201412 yr Member I remember people saying that she didn't cry tears the right way, or something, but it never was proven. I still can't believe that the first time Santa didn't take them. He really was a huge !@#$%^&*] in that special.

They got alot of complaint as well that Santa was WAY too surly, and in future productions they made him WAY jollier. Edited February 2, 201412 yr by alphanguy74
February 2, 201412 yr Member Well 1964 viewers were right on the nose. Today they'd probably write in and say that the special was supporting Obama, or something.
February 2, 201412 yr Member Those films have endured the test of time, Rankin-Bass certainly created some good material that will last forever. May he rest in peace, it's nice that he left a legacy that won't ever be forgotten. I don't see the films ever going out of style, they are holiday traditions.
