Soap Opera Pet Peeves

I always hate when they refer to the town as "small". A small town doesn't have a hospital, hotel, major corporations (like cosmetics, publishing) and an airport.

Well every town has hotels and hospitals. The major corporation is a bit much as is the airport.

I live in what is considered a small town and we do not have a hospital or a hotel. That was my pet peeve that they are always saying "this is small town we will run into each other" etc.

My hometown used to be called a small town and it had hotels, two big hospitals, and a small airport, lol! Oh and alot of suburbs.

I wouldn't call that a small town anymore. A lot of people will say "small" but it really isn't I think of small town as being less than 5,000 people.

Another pet peeve, I have noticed on GH that character will directly call Dante when they have an emergency instead of calling 911. Another thing is that everyone has each others cell phone numbers.

The teleporter! I know we are supposed to suspend our beliefs when it comes to travel but some are just too outrageous to ignore. Like on GH a few years ago, Carly decided to go from PC to Paris to bust up Courtney and Jax's date, yet all it took her was a comercial break to get there. WTF? They could have her go the next episode or at least show up in Paris at the very end of the show? Its especially bad when time seems to freeze in town as you'll have other people still having the same conversations during this "travel" and you know damn well they werent talking the 6+ hours it would have taken for that plane trip to occur

LOL can't believe that happened! I must of missed that, I don't remember it.

I don't mind the teleporter because primetime shows and movies do it all the time, but yes, it's extremely jarring on a soap when it happens and other scenes don't reflect the passage of time at all. I've kinda worked it out in my mind where we're not necessarily seeing everything in chronological order and the scenes bounce around the episode's time line.

Another pet peeve of mine is when serious issues like raped are played off as something to giggle about.

See OLTL and GH under FRon for examples

And also on DAYS for awhile when Nicole's porn star past was constantly thrown in her face as if it was something she chose willingly. Chad did it, Rafe did it, some random guy in a bar did it like child pornography isn't an issue.

That was absolutely fucked up. She was underage and forced to do it by her pervy daddy. We even saw the footage. I hated when they made it seem like Nicole was some sex nympho who chose to flash her goodies all over pornland. Way messed up.

All to make Sami look like a heroine.

I hate that soap characters who have been friends forever and ever introduce themselves when they call each other on the phone.

I don't mind it when people are on land lines (as some people have similar voices and can get confused as that has happened IRL to me), but on a cell phone it makes no sense due to the caller id feature.

  • Member

True, but OTOH, bl, land lines have caller ID's too.

Free advertisements as plotpoints. Hello---y'all already run more than twenty minutes of commercials an hour. I don't need to hear them practically recited verbatim during my show. Place the product in someone's bathroom (or other appropriate location) and let it go.

Interviews. I cringe every time some soap reporter opens their mouth.

Cross-promotional tie-ins. I don't want to see the latest Big Brother/Survivor hottie on my show.

Of course....they were my pet peeves. Don't really have to worry 'bout them now... :(
