Yeah, I found that odd too! But their main concern is that they don't have to have the studio teacher that day, to save money on her, if 18 year olds are playing the roles instead of 17 year olds.

I get what they are doing but it seemed implied to me that they have done so in the past and would have to again if the kids were under 18. It seems like a waste that they'd have to be required to have a tutor for an U5. Contract definetly. Recurring yes, but under 5? Its not like they are on filming hours worth of material

No matter how long on set the show has to follow all CA laws about child labor on set including a tutor. I believe it's done per day not hours on set.
