This synopsis covers a year I was now watching the show regularly, and actively involved/paying attention.
Contrary to what critics of soaps used to say, the show moved at a brisk pace, and it as not just about people sitting in the kitchen drinking coffee.
There was a lot of underlying tension among ambiguous characters who were neither saints nor sinners, but rather flawed individuals with both positive and negative traits. We could identify with them, and/or have strong feelings about them, because they were human. This was the strength of soaps like TGL when they were written well and predicated on characterization and interpersonal relationships.
I adored Peggy and Johnny. Johnny was so sweet, and the tension between him and Robin was always painful to watch.
I was furious at Bill for his affair with Maggie, but had to admit that Bert had been a shrew for so long, most men would have shut down and drifted away from her emotionally at some point.
Papa was a rock and a steadying paternal presence. I think many viewers would have wanted a grandfather just like him; I know I did.
It's weird how many memories are flooding back.
Thanks so much, @Reverend Ruthledge !
