Long running soaps that NEVER introduced the state the town took place in

Yes, it was weird when GL started saying it was Illinois. And during the Conboy/Weston era, Jeffrey O'Neill and Ross Marler even referenced Springfield as being the state's capital. GL's Springfield as a state capital... since when??

I would've thought it'd make sense for Springfield to be located in Michigan, since so much of it borders water with lighthouses galore.

I heard General Hospital didn't even get a "state/town name" until the early 70's. I wonder how long it took other soaps to say where they were from.

At least we know that Bold and Beutiful is in Beverly Hills...which is California. all the other soaps have made up town names like Llanview, Genoa City...

Well Salem is a real name but there are a lot of places called Salem in the US.

I remember on the AOL videos posted back in the day either pointedly stated or at heavily implied Bay City was in Michigan (I think it was in regards to the storyline about the casino opening on the edge of town in 1981). But I know that by 1989 for certain (as noted on Mac's last letter to Rachel), Bay City was said to be in Illinois.

ATWT was definitely Illinois because of all the Chicago references. Additionally, TEON had to be Illinois because "Oakdale" was where Draper/April lived. It was kind of funny that they used Oakdale when the show moved to ABC rather than one of the ABC soap locations.
