I remember being really excited when Michael Malone was announced as HW, thinking he would work some of the magic he was acclaimed for on OLTL. That turned out to be a huge bust ... and I felt like the network gave up on AW at that point.

All the CBS women looked alike. They all basically have a Melody Thomas Scott look about them as she seems to have been the template for all CBS stars. When Cady McClain went to ATWT she got that CBS look too, with the same haircut that maybe 300 other actresses on CBS soaps have. They are interchangeable and all look exactly alike. It could be Sharon Case, it could be Terri Columbino, Laura Wright, Maura West...it is the same doppelganger look over and over again. Michelle Stafford is almost exactly like them except she has her hair red.

A headwriter's success with a particular show depends on the relationship he/she has with their EP. I couldn't see even Agnes Nixon working well with someone like Charlotte Savitz, whose "vision" for ANOTHER WORLD amounted to spreadsheets.

And because it was her favorite song. ;)

I don't think it helped that Malone basically just reused his greatest OLTL hits and his 13 Bourbon Street bible. I never got the sense he was interested in AW itself. I guess part was also down to P&G mandates, but reading his comments that basically said Iris wouldn't be back because she was too old made me feel sad.

Believe me, I tried and tried, in my own fan-ficky way, to come up with a plausible backstory that would have made Carly Barbara Ryan's daughter. Given the history and animosity between those two in regards to Hal, to fashion design, and to everything else, it just seemed as if such a twist would have yielded significant dividends in story. Unfortunately, Barbara had been through the whole I-gave-up-a-child-before-I-came-back-to-Oakdale thing already with Paul; and even if you tried to say Carly and Paul were twins, that would have suggested James taking the one and squirreling it away from Babs, which would have conflicted with how he was written during Paul's paternity reveal.

And yes, you MIGHT have said James was just pretending he didn't know he was Paul's dad, but I hate those kinds of retcons.
