DAYS: March Discussion Thread

Holy bad acting Lisa Rinna. In fact, the acting as of late has been really phoned in lately by many of the key players (Rinna, Alfonso, Hogestyn).

One of the worst decisions ever still was to bring back John Black. Marlena is a much more viable character when he is in absentia.

It's really noticeable. Salem Place is a prime example. Great idea for connecting the community of characters on Days, but weakly executed because there was no real story (or budget!) on which to hang the entire premise. Honestly, don't kill me but Dena Higley worked better at coming up with plot within the confines of a restricted budget than Marlene & Whatshisname. They just need to brainstorm for some more solid ideas is all.

I do like Lisa Rinna, though, call me crazy (though Julie Pinson was my first choice for Billie to return). She has something bright and sparky about her that is breath of fresh air. Is she Meryl Streep? No. Can she emote through those giant lips? No. But she still makes me want to watch her, which is more than I can say for Hope and John staring at the phone in Alamania.

Kate Mansi is a one-note actress. Molly Burnett and the actress who plays Carrie really showed her up in yesterday's scenes. I'm not going to talk about Patrick Muldoon, lol.

They really have not been showcasing EJ much, have they? Not that I mind -- it is actually rather a relief. But I wonder if it is because they think James Scott is leaving after his contract is up and they are gradually easing his character from driving any major story?

I think the problem is the writing for John. He just seems neutered and without purpose.

John and Marlena are so popular and I'm OK with the two of them being together while Marlena also has her own life. In theory, John should also be having his own interesting journey, as Marlena is. But they have no idea what to do with him.

They have no idea what to do with EJ either. Repeating another pregnancy lie story is dumbfounding. I think they had more story for him which was killed by rewrites. At the time MarDar started, EJ was in just about every story.

Kate Mansi is OK, but she only seems to be able to play crazy. I don't believe in the term "legacy character", but it's sad that the only way they can write for the child of a supercouple is to make her a lunatic with no motivation whatsoever.

Drake has never been much of an actor but John still worked for years as someone who could be a major part of story. He's about the same as Chandler Massey (just with more of a weird faux-gruff voice) in mannerisms, and many say Massey needs an Emmy or it's a catastrophe.

Saw today's show and ummm...the Will/Lucas scenes fell so flat to me. The scenes were just blah. I just can't see Lucas as Will's dad. The acting was just there too...one think I love and hate about Chandler Massey is his hot smile. Must he smile everytime he has a scene. It's a smile but comes off smirky...dont know how to explain it. It's like everything seems so funny to Will even the serious stuff. I wish the director would tell him to tone down on his smiling because it becomes distracting to his scenes....yes we know you have a hot smile Chandler and great white teeth...but tone it down please....lol

It's true that Drake has never been a great actor but what made him likeable was that he was always into it. No matter what the story was Drake always gave 100 %, he was very soapy. You could tell on-screen that he lost alot of that passion around 2006, Drake even said so himself when John woke up from his coma in 2007. Then came RoboJohn in 2008 which Drake liked and he tried other mannerisms but the character and story were so bad. Drake loves being back on DAYS but there's still something missing.

Alexis Thorpe addressed this on her twitter:

DivaofDOOL: @AlexisThorpe_x Some of the script writers have said they weren't allowed to mention Rex and Cassie in scripts.

AlexisThorpe_x: @DivaofDOOL idk about Cassie, but there's a reason about Rex.

Diva of DOOL: @AlexisThorpe_x Could you tell me the reason? I also hated the re-write making you guys Bradys instead of DiMeras....

Alexis Thorpe: @DivaofDOOL uhh, sorry I'm not allowed to disclose! I'd tell...if ' could!

Very interesting...what could the reason be? Eric Winter can't have control of mentions of a character's name?

Yeah even the Will stuff was boring today. There was no drama in those scenes. It was like oh you work for EJ....will let me tell you what...blah..blah..blah...so boring.

    • I totally agree with this, as most of you seem to. Mary Carney was at least competent and reasonably likable; I just feel like she barely had anything of substance to do before she was abruptly given the hook. And I get the backstory of Kathleen Tolan having done a play with Helen Gallagher, but...at any point did they ever actually READ her before they greenlit her? Because...OOF. First time I saw her on SoapNet was right when this GODAWFUL actress named Charity Rahmer played Belle on Days of Our Lives for all of three weeks before she was mercifully recast; her line readings were straight out of a Charlie Brown special. I remember thinking Kathleen Tolan could have played her mother! In the Frank/Jill/Delia triangle, Delia WAS the one who was cheated on, so I got why she was upset and thought it was perfectly valid in theory at least, but of course it was blown up to Wagnerian proportions including falls involving staircases and tricycles. But with Pat/Faith/Delia I had no sympathy for her...especially because it was mainly with Catherine Hicks's Faith and I really liked her.
    • I was going through those episodes from 1984 and early 1985 before they were taken down. Some of the older characters, like Don and even Tom, looked a little out of place, like they were on the wrong show. But the newer characters were fun. It's too bad they lost the character of Melissa. I guess Jennifer took her long-term place on the canvas.

    • The black and white episodes of the show are very special. An atmosphere the color run loses. Dark Shadows was filmed live-on-tape. They could do a retake but it would be very expensive. I think there was a claim that if actors wanted a retake they would curse. There was also a rumor that at one point Joan Bennett accidentally said "Hollywood" instead of "Collinwood" and that necessitated a retake.

    • Loved this IG post from Ambyr about how she and Trisha work together. You can tell these ladies go above and beyond the script, and that they really trust and enjoy working together. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DJpJufFPOQ2/?igsh=MXBmcWs0YzIwaXVhNA==

    • It is a shame that more characters didn't go the ATWT-Barbara route and make the ingénue into an antagonist. Sort of like they did with Liza/Hogan/Sunny, less successfully. It is a credit to ATWT's creativity that breathed life in that character for years after she was fighting off bulls in Spain.  But, a character like Liza can only have so many true loves and high jinks on the high seas.  They need another reason to be in the story. Liza's wealth, as well as her acumen to see through fraud, was fertile ground for tons of stories.  But, I feel like the business stories for Liza were always about her being easily overwhelmed, rather than exploring things like her leadership and managerial skills.
    • STFU!! Dante!!! This nonsense of blaming Gio is just ridiculous! Alexis and Lucky are becoming so unlikable. Why are the writers writing these characters so poorly?
    • Keith still comes off younger to me. I thought he wasn't that bad for his first day.
    • To be fair, they were only recently step-siblings.  Their parents married within the past few years.  And, Draper's father Ansel was not coy about the fact that he married Raven's mother, Nadine, for the money. And, Raven's sort of sticking it to April that not only can she have a baby (April has a heart condition that makes it difficult for her to carry a child to term), she could also have April's man, if she wanted him.
