I can see them possibly succeeding in getting this going at some point, probably in some low cost state or Canada and/or using non-union crew. However, I have major doubts that they could get any of the important cast members to sign on now. I think they really burned their bridges with the 2 casts.

I don't know much about unions but didn't Cady McClain say they were basically there to prevent the actors being worked as slave laborers? What actor in their right mind would sign up for a slave-esque work environment?

Ha, you'd be surprised what a thirsty, inexperienced actor desperate for a break would put his or herself through. And some directors have no scruples and would work their talent to death if not regulated. The unions assure that there are pay minimums, there is overtime pay, there are set breaks, there is FOOD!, transportation is provided under extenuating circumstances... all of those humanizing things. There is no way in hell PP can do AMC or OLTL non-union as is simply because they will lose all of their actors. I shouldn't even put this out there, but they could do like a modern day retelling or flashback/alternate reality spin using familiar characters and non-union newbies at best. Like, they could do a whole s/l on 1960s Eterna alone, two porn rejects from the valley playing Viki and Roger Gordon. Or they could focus on all new characters from the *other* side of Pine Valley. They just need to cut their losses because none of that is satisfactory.

I have no idea why they won't film these soaps in Canada anyways its much cheaper to film up there than it is in NY or LA that's why several movies are filmed in Toronto and Vancouver. The only problem that they will have with the Canada decision is getting actors to move to Canada which is a major obstacle.

I think what should happen is they should get a Canadian distributor to take care of the shows financially and base them out of Canada and sell the shows to the US under a license fee like SoapNet did with Being Erica.

Right now the best route to go in is selling these soaps internationally instead of domestically.

First off, being Erica debuted on Soapnet after it began airing on the CBC. It's a Canadian show, period. BBC International distributes it worldwide.

Second, it is NOT cheaper to film in Canada anymore. The Canadian dollar is fluctuating at par or above the US dollar, therefore the production savings of yesteryear (when the Canadian dollar would be worth 75 cents US) is over. As well, Canadian crews and actors have the same, if not better, union rights than in the US.

Three, it would be very difficult for US actors to get work visas in Canada if they weren't working on a Canadian program due to residency and tax requirements since the actors would be in Canada long enough to establish a tax due to the Canadian government, unlike movie or primetime television actors who are in Canada for 2 or 3 months.

Four, AFTRA and SAG both have rules about flying actors to and from shooting locations, including Canada.

Five, Toronto and Vancouver are not used as filming locations because they are cheaper. Rather, they are used as filming locations because they are, visually, very versatile places to shoot in and because the crews in both cities are second to none worldwide.

You seem to have some of this information mixed up not all of it but some of it.

I never said Being Erica aired on SoapNet first, I said BBC International licensed it to SoapNet to air the series in the States. SoapNet had to pay a license fee in order to have the rights to air it.

It is still cheaper to produce in Canada than the US why do you think PP brought it up in the article. Tax credits to production is what makes the difference between it being cheaper not the dollar itself.

I just brought up Toronto and Vancouver as examples b/c series are mostly shot in those cities.

IMHO, DC and the soap press has been acting like clowns through out this whole PP fallout.

Katy Perry songs were basically created to be background music on CW TV shows.

And it's long past time for Jamey to STFU. Hey berates PP for getting fans hopes up yet ignores how he practically acted like their person PR man, cheerleader and pimp. He had a big part in raising people's hopes. If he wants PP to come correct perhaps he should stop talking about them until there's actually something to report and save these essays of his for his LiveJournal account.

Prospect Park brought up shooting in Canada because they are a ridiculous, lying enterprise that will spin in circles in order to shield themselves from bad publicity. They hope that ill informed consumers of information will go "Well they thought of Canada! So they must be serious!" when in fact it's a total fallacy.

The tax credit systems in British Columbia and Ontario have fallen behind California and New York, Canada isn't anywhere near as competitive as it used to be and that's a damn shame.
