DAYS: Horton Ornament Ceremony: 2011 Edition

The only thing that stands out for me is one more statement "The Bradys alone are the real core family at Days".

I'll wait before I pass final judgements, but I'm not liking the sounds of this. For the past 30 years of my soap-opera viewership, there were certain traditions I incorporated into my personal life - and one of them was watching Days on Christmas Eve to get the story at the hospital then the tree ceremony with the Hortons. Even when I was years without watching any other day, I would still tune in Christmas Eve to watch the show.

Who are these writers and who do they think they are appealing to? I haven't watched in weeks, what they gave Magic as a wedding was insulting in more ways than I can count and I'm not seeing a single story that is worth my time and attention.

The christmas episode does not have to be realistic, it just has to be a nice celebration of christmas. Since no one is in the holiday mood on the 6th and the day before christmas is when we would expect a holiday episode, by putting it on the 6th it will mean the ornaments will be a Hallmark moment in non-holiday world. Dec 24th, sing all the Bing Crosby songs you want. Dec 6th, sorry don't bother me.

The tree is always decorated far before the special Horton Ornaments are placed on the tree. They are put on during an age-old ritual on Christmas Eve. If it was merely having a decorating party on the 6th - no problem. But to place the Horton Ornaments on the tree that early diminishes their significance IMO, and certain slaps the face of tradition.

Quite frankly, the fact that they are having it all is a joy to me, considering most of the soap traditions have gone the way of the dinosaurs in recent years. Special moments and family being together doesn't need a specific date. It's the holiday season, and it will be a happy event. That's all that matters.

Mmmm….. if this was other shows that prove time and time again they don't respect their history or traditions, then I might be inclined to agree. But Days has been very loud and clear on their "respecting history" and "respecting vets". Arguably it's BS except for a few chosen vets, but when they brag so loudly about the importance or the Hortons and traditions, then don't even keep the most basic one intact, I'm not so amused.

Good point. I'd rather have an early "Horton Balls" ceremony than what I saw on Y&R's Thanksgiving episode: crazy Patty snuggling next to Jack, whose dinner she just drugged with some kind of sleeping medication. (Gobble-gobble, everyone!)

I'm with you. We always, ALWAYS tune in to the Christmas episodes of DAYS. And when we do, we do it expecting to hear the Christmas story read and, most importantly, to watch the Hortons hang their special ornaments. Even during the Reilly years, when the DAYS I grew up with was virtually unrecognizable, we still got the Hortons hanging their balls. Hell, he even brought back Hortons many years, including Marie, Melissa, and that's when they started bringing Doug & Julie back every year. And it was always poignant wattching them hang the ornaments of those that had passed or were no longer on the show.

Watching them is a Christmas tradition in my house. I remember watching it with my Grandmother when she was alive, and I watch it with my mother every year. Hell, even my brothers and sister, who don't even really watch, end up watching the Hortons hang their balls every year on Christmas.

Not only is it a DAYS tradition, but a family tradition in many homes like mine.

Like I said and remos said, it's a Christmas tradition, both on the show and in certain people's families. It's not the same that it won't be part of the Christmas show this year for whatever reason

You have to understand, some of us having been watching DAYS with our parents and grandparents since we were little kids. For example, I was born in 1979 and have been watching and can remember watching since 1982. So for the past 29 years, every year on Christmas I've watched the Hortons hang those ornaments. Where other soaps have broken traditions or never had traditions in the first place, DAYS always did and this is probably the most important one.

Now I fully back MarDar and am LOVING what they're doing with the show, but the ornaments not being hung on the Christmas Eve episode is a HUGE disappointment and it breaks tradition. As Mystic Pizza's Leona would say, you don't monkey with tradition.

I think my above post explains it pretty well, but as I said, for many people, like myself, watching the Hortons hang their ornaments on Christmas is as much an annual tradition as opening our gifts.

There HAS to be some reason that they're doing it early this year. What that is I'm not sure of but I'm POSITIVE there is something going on here and an explanation for this in story. Any of the actors would have told the writers/producers that this is a Christmas tradition so something is definitely up IMO, which is why this spoiler has me more curious than it does angry, especially with all this mystery surrounding Alice (a storyline that I'm LOVING and has me intrigued, far more than any DAYS storyline has in YEARS!).

I have watched for over 25 years and I am not in the least upset that the show is going to hang their balls early.

I actually think it's not a big deal at all.

Some people are getting worked up for nothing.

Making drama where there is no need for any.

In total it takes what...5 minutes to show them hanging them on the show?

Maybe even 10 minutes?

I highly doubt everyone's ''tradition'' is going to be ruined by the time switch.

Maybe DVR it and just watch it on Christmas Eve then.

It will be just the same.

I can't be the only one who thinks it's funny how some fans get worked up over this???

Reminds me of the great bedsheet switch!

      I thought today was still good. Leo is always awful, but the characters treating him like he's a plague feeds my soul. Rafe in particular had been very passive about him, but today was wonderful seeing him put Leo on notice. I really think it's being written that Javi is going to have to eventually take the blinders off and see Leo for who he really is. Them having sex on Gabi's desk made me want to explode. Roman taking in stray Doug was nice to see. And the mention of Frankie and Max was unexpected, but good to know they're at least being thought of. Tate being petty and a bit vindictive by going back to Sophia's as soon as he saw Doug with Holly was entertaining for me. I think I actually like Tate the most out of all of them because he's so damn messy.  Is Holly about to be kidnapped? Her first time? Also, Gabi finally revealing what happened with her the night EJ was shot and the clearing of all the other main suspects, but Johnny made this still feel like an important episode. I think Johnny will be cleared soon enough leaving everybody at a loss for the hell shot EJ. How the real shooter will be revealed is going to be interesting.  Speculation: When Kristen finally puts together that her daughter Rachel shot him, she'll agree to frame her mother for the crime, while keeping her hidden away from Salem.

      That would have saved the Anita singing segment -- having her by herself, singing quietly and reflectively. Belting it out like she was in church did not work. The black screens fade at the end was a mistake. BTG insists on being different with these fades for the sake of being different, and it's not working.   I thought all of that was just fine. Worked for me.   I'm going to disagree with this. Martin hasn't had many scenes with his parents, but he's been around family A LOT -- and that's what matters. We also know Martin is someone with a hair trigger response. He can be very emotional when discussing an issue before getting to the logic and reason of it all.

      My view of Evan is that he's smart but not as smart as he thinks he is, not a good guy but not an entirely bad guy - he's a lot of things, the show never quite knowing what to do with them. I never saw him as Iris' follower because Iris always seemed a bit in over her head from the start.

      She was the Town Historian, who knew a bit too much about Brandon and the infamous cottage.  SF was still a pretty normal place at that time, with Nola and Reva being the most outrageous citizens....seems that Carrie Pipper would have stood out a bit more for people.

      Yes, I need to dot hat. Also on my list talking to the person I got these files from since they clearly have a mess, in terms of dates being wrong. And, unfortunately finding one date wrong, automatically means more are wrong, too.

      I'm hoping that it doesn't happen. If the show keeps putting out good performance and story it will be hard to shut it out. Daphnee, Trisha, Ambyr and Colby are earning nominations without question.

      Speaking of correcting dates, since you mentioned it above, why don't you go back to your Saturday post and edit it and replace your wording of "DAYS Ruth Buzzi 11-2-83"  with "DAYS Ruth Buzzi 11-1-83" and add a note that the video has the wrong date of 11/2/83 on it, and that the video is actually 11/1/83.
