ATWT: P&G to release ATWT DVD Collection

That interview was great! I loved reading her talking about that story. It would be extremely creepy for a soap storyline to parallel your own life, especially when your the one acting it. I think she even said her car broke down by an Inn that was run down like the Willows. Just crazy. Thanks for doing that interview by the way.

Have encountered some music rights issues while researching potential additional shows. This may be common knowledge but something new that I learned this week was in the early 1990s, in some cases, the soaps started replacing the pop music songs with other songs right after the show aired on the master tape. I don't have the whole background, I'm thinking they pay for the rights to use a song one time and never again (in repeats on Soapnet or on DVDs like with ATWT). I remember a case a while back where the OLTL episode on Soapnet played a different song than the daytime version. If you pay for more rights then I guess you can air it however many times you pay for.

Anyway, in looking at potential other shows for the future from all the P&G soaps I started thinking how some of my favorite scenes involved very memorable pop music. The rights can cost upwards of $100,000 so no way that's happening. And to replace it with another song (if it's an older episode where that didn't happen in the master) costs money as well. So it will definitely be much, much harder to include those types of episodes on future DVDs (unless, like I said, the show actually paid for more usage). One non-ATWT episode that comes to mind is Rita in the Hall of Mirrors on GL. Donna Summer's "Enough is Enough" really made that for me. But it's not a option because of music rights. I don't have the exact breakdown but someone like Lisa or Lyla singing a popular song is more feasible.

Anyway, I think we got lucky on the first ATWT DVD not encountering any rights issues other than old commercials.

Please keep submitting your choices for future episodes for ATWT and the other soaps. It's very helpful to get a sense of how many people like the same things.

Which episodes exactly have the music right issues?? I've knew of this from buying so many DVDs.

I'm watching the 1979 episode in its entirety right now, and I absolutely LOVE it. LOVE it. This is the slow-as-hell ATWT I wish we could see more of.

For some reason, I really enjoyed the Tom-Lisa scene. There's just something about their dynamic...I like how Lisa can talk about her love life with her son, and he's not an ass about it.

REALLY? There were some very long scenes in there, like the Bob/Dana one at the theatre towards the end. Just the two of them talking, some silences, and I don't think there was even a shot of them both in the same frame. Just talking heads. I ate it up like dinner, but I can see why people could get restless.

It's no secret, I am dying for anything from 1967-1975. I watch that '72 kinescope at least once a week.

I am only going by Schemering's book, but he said when the ratings fell in 1978 they started trying to cut scenes up more and move the pace.

I didn't find the episode slow either. I found it very classy and well paced. At least to me it felt like a good episode (much better than some of the 80s ones) and left me wanting more.

Thanks for keeping us informed. The 2000 one has the last appearance of Rosemary Prinz.

That's why I picked it. Two original cast members (along with Helen) as well as a couple of minutes of 1960s black and white flashbacks. Anne Sward came back that episode too. I think you mentioned the 1992 Christmas show at one point. I just smiled knowing it was actually coming soon.

Just FYI...The 1987 Christmas show was one that had a music rights issue.

Yes the 1992 and 1991 Christmas shows were very good, it's nice to see one chosen from that timeframe. The 1991 had a candle-lighting ceremony (or was that 1992?) I found very moving.

I love Anne Sward - glad to see her getting more respect from your DVDs than she did in some of ATWT's later years...

Thanks again for telling us about this stuff.

I got an email about the Christmas set, and I'm glad they're releasing it, but that's crazy pricing, don't you think? The 20-episode set was only $19.95, but this set with just 5 episodes is original price $12.95? I really want it, but I might just wait until it's a little cheaper...

I got the same email. I've got to pick it up. All the episodes sound good except for the 2007 one. I didn't care for that one at all.
