Members Wizzerkat
I only watched AMC religiously but I did know some about all three. 1. AMC-The best at tying things up but not totally in a bow. I liked the cliffhanger(heck, they could go with someone besides JR shooting the gun). Erica's ending was classic. 2. GL-I did not think it was too boring and the down the road stuff was good. 3. ATWT-Knew the least about this one but liked Bob narrating. I still liked it the least even if I only knew GL slightly better I was more satisfied with it.
Members EricMontreal22
You do know that if you read your posts in a row they waffle more than a stack at IHOP, right? Having (finally) seen the AMC one I'd give it a B+ I loved it in so many ways, it also felt edited down to an hour to me. GL gets a B for effort--ATWT a B- for ignoring my fave character, again (Lisa)
Members P.J.
I guess that's the difference...I don't credit GL for keeping their characters in character. To me, nearly all the characters were unlikeable by the end, and bringing back Holly to listen to Olivia whine, or Nola to utter a few lines didn't give me the warm fuzzies. I think what you term generic happenins on ATWT, I see as character progression. The moments may have felt small, but that's what life is made of. And I think that played into what ATWT always did best---family and relationships.
Members DRW50
I guess for me it didn't matter that much what the people did as long as I got to see them. It was the characters, because the actors usually knew how to make a story work, no matter how bad it was. If the people are just sort of there, in somewhat cliched circumstances, then I'm not all that interested, I'm not connected. For instance, I guess it was character progression with Chris/Katie, but I just didn't care, it was grindingly predictable and, aside from a nice scene where Kim told Katie off, not all that interesting. Yet so much of the last episodes were spent on this stuff. And things like the last scene of Nancy's memorial episode (an episode with zero mention of Penny, Don, the grandchildren or great-grandchildren) being Katie talking about how hard her life was, I just...no. Members DRW50
As for Nola, I guess the reason I liked that was because it felt like the show was making an effort (albeit a very token effort) to make up for the crap that they did do the character in previous years. That probably wasn't the intention at all - they probably just called up people and asked if they wanted to be involved - but I appreciated that this was a final chance, one I'd never expected, to see the show even slightly correct their past mistakes. And it was just a blast, for me, to see people like Bridget one last time, as I never thought I would. If I were going based on how an episode was put together, then I would probably say ATWT's final episode was better, but ultimately for me it was like a nicely wrapped gift from a stranger or a somewhat cheaply put together gift from a friend. And I'm sorry I even feel that way because I loved both GL and ATWT and still do. I don't know, maybe if I was just watching and didn't go online, didn't know about Goutman's follies, didn't read the commentaries that tried to praise the show as daring or bold for not having returns, I might not be so jaded. Maybe it's just bad of me.
Members Khan
I'm not sure either. On the one hand, AMC had far better production values than GUIDING LIGHT or even AS THE WORLD TURNS, even though they, too, suffered from a budget crunch in the end. But, OTOH, if it all comes down to the writing, then I think AMC's finale had the most "heart," with ATWT a very strong second. (GL's finale was just poor all around, IMO.) Members Kryptonite
I watched all three finales and loved them but AMC was by far the best of the three. I wonder if OLTL will outdo them.
Members P.J.
I know I've harped too much on this---it's not like I don't think ATWT's could have been better, or that in my heart I didn't want to feel something for GL the minute Phillip's return was announced. I also know that on a lot of boards, (not here and certainly not for you Carl) this question hinges on the Lure vs. Otalia's fate, which drives me nuts. Members DRW50
Oh I don't think you've harped at all - if anything I think you've been very patient since I've gone on about this more than a few times. I guess my version of ATWT was some fantasy land which I never did let go (and of course part of the reason for that was they kept a lot of their vets, which most soaps never have). My view of GL had fallen so far that the fantasy was long gone.
Members P.J.
^^^It still hurts that ATWT's gone, doesn't it? It's just not the same posting about the absurdity that is B&B.
Members DRW50
Yes. I miss the show a lot - a few years ago I wouldn't have said that but then I thought the show would always be there. I'm just glad episodes still come up on Youtube. Members Max
Regarding the AW finale, it still did have many nice moments aside from the gorilla. I did love how all of the Bay City characters wished Cass and Lila well (which of course was just a great way for the AW cast to wish its fans well). The final dialogue and scene between Carl and Rachael was very touching, as was the Bette Midler song that played at the end. However, the gorilla scene alone makes it far worse than the final episodes of GL, ATWT, & AMC.
Members EricMontreal22
Will OLTL get a finale or just go over? I did like the party idea--although back in the day it would have been in the ballroom, not the cramped looking living room. I'm someone who, while I wouldn't have liked ot have seen AMC end with this cliffhanger if it wasn't coming back, I do think soaps shouldn't tie everything up neatly the way some seem to want. It's more comforting to me, as someone here said, to know and feel that these characters' lives will continue. As others have said, it just needed tobe 2 hours... Members Khan
If a finale leaves you feeling satisfied but also lets your imagination wander a bit (more), then I think it's okay (KNOTS LANDING being one good example). But it should still feel like an ending. AMC's finale felt less like a finale, IMO, and more like the big episode before some massive reboot, which it most likely is. Members Gray Bunny
I like how people are using that "reboot" term now. Days of Our Lives is such a trendsetter
