That JFP podcast thread made me curious about the GH train wreck (the plotline, not the show) and oof the way they wrote Luke is...something @ an hour and 23 minutes:

Luke loved the hell out of his kids...what the hell?

I didn't watch the whole thing because...lol, can anyone tell me why all of these characters were on a train?

I thought the train sweeps event was stupid at the time.

Greg’s Lucky is really just a generic bland soap hunk.  But I liked him better than JY in the role.

I was still so into the show at that point, but a few months after this I had enough, and quit watching until the contagion sweeps event, or Laura waking up.  I can’t remember which one was first.  Too much Courtney, I hated Sam, I was sick of Sonny, Emily was a chore.

It was something to do with Liz and Lucky's wedding I think. Maybe they were all going to a party afterwards? It just also happened to be the train that Sam and Jason were on and Manny showed up to stalk Sam. Then somehow Carly escaped from jail or the psychiatric hospital and also ended up on the same [!@#$%^&*] train. None of it ever made sense.

I barely remember the specifics of his introduction but he was part of some mob family that came to Port Charles to kill Sonny and Jason. That never happened obviously and then at some point he became obsessed with Sam. At some point after all this, he had an identical twin brother show up who was a priest and was there during the hostage crisis.

Manny Ruiz and his twin the priest(?) were played by Robert LaSardo, a character actor who was hot at the time due to his recurring role as a druglord on nip/tuck. Guza was very fond of emulating primetime and film at the time in the laziest ways by literally hiring the same actors for similar roles, or shamelessly recreating others, like having his reinvented Jerry Jacks played by Roche take on the name "Mr. Craig" the same year the gritty Casino Royale came out. Manny was basically LaSardo's primetime character again. His story got ridiculous and I don't remember what became of him.

This statement is so accurate it hurts. I really do like GV and think he's adorable, but I totally get what you're saying...he played the role very safe or maybe the writing just wasn't there when he played the character, but he seems really sweet and I hear he's doing well on DAYS. JY was never Lucky for me...maybe because he was on the way out when I started watching GH for a bit.

I think Jason threw him off the roof of GH

Like most Guza era villains, the Manny saga went on forever. In addition to the train wreck antics, there was also when he shot up the PCPD, shooting Sam (and I think Lucky too at some point), holding all the women in town hostage, and some absurd plot point involving him escaping out of custody on a plane. It was just all ridiculous. It had nothing to do with actors and everything to do with the fact that Jason and Sonny always had to be the "good" guys.

Just skimming through that train wreck clip remind me of how horrendous that era of the show was. Reese!, Skye and Tracy fighting over Luke, Manny, Courtney, Sonny and Jason 24/7. I don't even remember that Jesse dude that I guess is with Maxie. This was all right after Nikolas's look a like raped Emily and that horrible story with the Corinthos children, Michael "dying", and then him supposedly killing AJ with a pillow. I'll admit that I mostly still really liked GH up until around this era. This is around the time it really started pissing me off.

I think we also had the replacement Felicia at this point because Brian Frons and JFP had decided Kristina Wagner was "matronly" and ran her off the show.

I did remind me though that both Julie Berman and Laura Wright did hit the ground running as Lulu and Carly. Berman definitely got...less impressive as time went on and Wright has gotten kind of lazy but, at the time, they both were doing very well right out of the gate.

Manny's identical (even the tattoos! lol) good twin, Father Mateo was one of the hostages during the Metro Court hostage crisis; but other than that, Mateo's story went nowhere.

Manny also shot and killed Justus, and Carly's biological father John Durant (played by Corbin Bernsen). He didn't actually shoot Lucky but held Liz hostage at knifepoint and Lucky injured his back when he went to rescue Liz.

Manny's shooting of Sam prompted Jason to tell Alexis that Sam was her daughter. Alexis immediately took over and tried to cut Jason out of Sam's life.

Manny (all roads led back to Manny) decided to cause a mob war between Lorenzo and Sonny by getting some clowns (that is, his goons dressed as clowns) to target Lorenzo's son Diego (who later became the text message killer but that's another story) at a carnival. However, it was Jesse who ended up getting shot during the ensuing shoot-out and he died. Jesse had only been introduced the previous summer (2005) when they tried doing a summer on-the-run storyline with him and Maxie.

After Jesse died, Maxie initially went after Nikolas. But after Nikolas made it clear he wasn't interested, Maxie turned to Lucky and began supplying him with pills for his back injury.

Thus began the "summer of sleaze" when Lucky slept with Maxie, Sam slept with Ric and Jason slept with Liz.

Contagion was first, that played out over February 2006. Laura woke up in October.

    • Jill Farren Phelps was always very skilled at saying what she meant onscreen in the bluntest way possible, like whenever she wanted fans to support one character vs. the other (hence Megan McTavish groaning about having to write Kale Browne's Sam Rappaport into three days a week at OLTL). Perhaps you should consider doing the same. Historically your intent is always far more obvious than your efforts at coy embroidery anyway. You believe people are dismissing Phelps' accomplishments, and suggest misogyny and fan blinders allow people to too easily pigeonhole and dismiss her skill set. I think we all understand her varied skill set. We're saying it's not enough to make up for her deficiencies as a storyteller and creative. JFP was undoubtedly a skilled technical producer. As a solo storyteller, and de facto HW, she was a repeat and predictable failure. She was not the first or last EP (male or female) to think she was a writer. If you want us to stop taking your behavior personally when you suggest misogyny is at play in board opinions of JFP, perhaps you should consider spending the next 10+ years here not acting like you're the only one who gets it.

Melissa was here today & we went to Michael's Crafts & Ofc Depot. In Michael's there were two beautiful LITTLE girls who kept staring at me, so I gave them a littel wave & very quietly said HI & then did back. I told Melissa they were staring at me. She smiled & said "Purple. A lot of little girls love purple & you forget but you have purple hair. Seeing you their whole imaginations are transformed! Thinking "That lady has purple hair. That means I can have purple hair! They had no clue before seeing you that it was possible." I just laughed & laughed.
    • This opening scene is hilarious...it's like someone wrote out the script for Philip with one hand. And Rick...sniffing a scarf over and over. And in their next scene they are still sniffing the [!@#$%^&*] scarf as the camera stays all over Philip's bare chest and armpits as he keeps working out. Insane stuff.

Bay City better be ready, because I'm back!   At Vicky's apartment she is once again drowning in doubts and jealousy. Deep down she realizes that her dream wedding will be a farce and nothing can change that. Bridget tries to calm her down, but the heroine is determined to suffer. She is not hearing any positive thoughts. She doesn't believe Jamie will marry her. At the Cory Publishing building another farce is in process. Iris, once again pretending to be the angel of love and sisterhood... is telling Mac and Rachel some wonderful news. When Iris has good news, you really need to look out for yourself. That's when things are bad. So what are the news? Miss Devil has put Amanda up for an award! Mac is smiling from ear to ear, and Rachel is suspicious. Maybe that's the effect Iris is looking for. To once again accent on the fact that Rachel doubts and criticizes her daughter. Iris will do anything to destabilize their relationship. She is like a cancer. Back to Vicky! Jamie is at the door. Looking like a sad puppy, he has come with a surprise. No, he is not gonna leave her and her unborn... Not yet. He has bought her earrings. Sad face. How nice. NOT. Victoria, of course... manages to break one of them the moment she touches it. Bad premonition maybe? She was back in hysterics. It's not easy to trap a man into marriage. Then you have to live with someone that didn't want you in the first place.  We were introduced to a new character (to me at least she is new) - Cass's sister - Stacey. She is giving me "hidden skeletons in the closet"-vibes. Love a girl like that. Stunning actress. I like her. The highlight of the episode was the strange and creepy reveal of Evan the escort... hugging someone named Janice's grave. I remember she had an issue with Rachel... and Rachel killed her in self defense I think... It was hinted in prior episodes, but I lack the context and story. I just know that everyone at the Frame house was mad that Rachel killed the bish. But I also got the impression that this Janice was sick in the head. So Evan is now talking to her grave and telling her he is going to ruin Rachel's life basically. Oh, Evan... I liked you better as a sexy gigolo.  Overall - 10/10 - how can I rate it lower when I haven't watched in months!!!

    • Once again, Marlena and Kayla were used very effectively and I couldn’t be happier.  Marlena counseling Johnny and then Chanel was the best part of today. They’re really delving into the human emotion of this storyline and I think that’s a good thing. It feels so much mature than it was before. EJ’s fear about what could happen to Johnny if he doesn’t let go of his anger could lead to some really good storylines in the future.  I also really appreciate the way that Paula/Jeanne are mixing it up and having different characters interact with each other. It was nice to see Shawn and Johnny remember that they’re cousins and share a scene together. I liked the parallel that was drawn between the two of them, and what’s going on with their fathers. I did have mixed feelings about everything with Cat though. I enjoyed Chanel warning her about EJ, mostly because it played into the way that she was written today. But I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Chad/EJ scenes. The two of them discussing Chad’s potential feelings for Cat didn’t really keep my interest.  But above all, I feel that everyone is being used more effectively and that we’re getting a better understanding of everyone as well. And that was exactly what Days needed.
    • It's a wild story for sure, especially the final conclusion (and fireworks offcamera, like Victoria Wyndham tearing into Michael Logan).

    • I did some research and the story wrapped up with Eric,a caretaker responsible for Georgina's death who then  tried to do away with Laurie but a vision of Georgina spooked him and he smashed into a mirror, dying of glass wounds. So there was a supernatural element. I wonder if the Brody character in the credits was Eric Brody?
