Griffith talked about leaving due to Frons being too controlling, but it was a vague comment and that's all I've heard about the run.

What I meant about day to day writing is I never felt like just fast forwarding (OK, some of the Heaven Can Wait stuff) or like it was a huge chore to sit through an episode myself the way I did for huge chunks of Higley's run.

Gary's show was high camp, mostly dumb - unlike the technique Ron Carlivati perfected years later, which on its best days mixes good, smart storytelling with comedy (and on its bad days does something quite different) - but he did bring back the show's heart after an extended hiatus, and he dearly loved OLTL and worked to respond to just about everything under the sun from fans. He tried to please everyone as well, which was impossible. It was a goof of a show, but it was fun and it gave me as a fan back some sense of pride, especially when a story or character did really work and connect (Natalie, the baby swap, and then Cristian and Natalie).

Gary got in hot water with the old school Todd and Téa fanbase the following year when he brought her back, and then publicly commented on the classic fanbase mailbox-stuffing technique. It's common for most fanbases on soaps, really, but I'm not sure any other exec has ever addressed it or singled out a particular fanbase. I don't think they ever forgave him for that. I always thought it was horrible that they'd made a point to write in that Todd did not bother to call the Coast Guard to go get Téa and Ross. I don't know whose idea it was. It was typical callous, cartoonish Todd at that juncture, but it was so unnecessary, particularly after the emotional scenes he'd had regarding her, Blair and Starr before leaving that island.

I loved Téa and had missed her since two years prior, but I thought her return in '02 was crap. Specifically after they cut the scenes they'd apparently shot with her and Tim Stickney, addressing the way Téa abandoned R.J. They set that up with R.J. talking about Téa with another character, then the meeting never materialized onscreen. Bullshit.

December 1987 clips. Delilah's disappearance (who is that lady cop?), Mari Lyn's car crash, a little of the Clint blindness story. A little of Kate and her grandmother, Elizabeth.

Who is the guy with Mari Lyn?

The car crash scene (so many car crashes in the Rauch era) is hilarious. Zoom zoom zoom in on her face like a music video from 1983.

Great to see more of Lee.

I had no idea Mari Lyn ever had any story about being disfigured. Was it dropped? Didn't Lee get killed a few months after this?

    • I will admit to not liking John Bolger in the role of Phillip, but on rewatch, he has a really nice friend chemistry with Michael and Krista. And I think it's the only period of time where Phillip hasn't pulled Rick into some stupid scheme that ends up hurting the friendship.

You're right about everything! The casino needs to go and it's ugly! The ugliest set on BTG.
    • Jayne Bentzen is the actress who played Nicole at that point. She joined Edge the year before, replacing Maeve McGuire.
    • Wait.....Anita is an EGOT, Vernon was an important Senator, and Dani was an international model (no matter how brief, although I thought she said she was on par with Tyra Banks(or someone)...meanwhile, Nicole's some nice psychologist/psychiatrist with an award on her wall...but Dani's hasn't added to the Dupree mystique?  I don't think the writers considered ever having any Dupree be less than utterly fabulously successful  and that's actually flaw in the structure of the show.  Oh, I forgot to say...Smitty acts like she stumbled into Vanessa's Only Fans account and paid for a picture of her dirty undies before realizing it was her.
    • I watched another batch of episodes and I have a sense of dread. I fear they are setting up a murder storyline with one of my favorite characters as the victim. I don't know if that would be considered a spoiler so won't reveal the character. If that's so, i will be extremely disappointed as this person has done Emmy caliber work and would create such a void on the show.  If I'm right, I think I know who the suspect will be and I would rather the suspect be murdered.  Joel Crothers's Miles has had more of a presence with his wife Nicole and I enjoy both actors. Crothers is just so yummy and charismatic. Don't know who plays Nicole but I like their relationship.  Ann Williams has been phenomenal as Margo. Margo is desperate to keep Eliot and make April happy. Williams had a nice scene with Kibbee's Geraldine about Logan and the baby. Eliot has been so slimy and menacing but he's so watchable. April and Draper are still fighting over the baby and something has happened to April to land her in the hospital. I just keep hoping she'll kick Draper out. The man is such a pain. Raven needs to come back and sleep with him. She can liven him up. Ann Flood and Frances Fisher had a wonderfully written scene where Deborah confesses her feelings for Owen. The writing and acting for this scene was first-rate. I want more of Flood. It's good to see Fisher getting more to do. Steve and his low cut shirts have been sidelined lately. The writers are setting up a Deborah/Nola confrontation.  Paige and Brian are still pretty much an afterthought. The movie plot is coming along nicely and there was a great episode where Margo had a party for the movie at her penthouse. Still enjoying the show.
    • See, I imagine it as some kind of "private" room within a bigger casino.
    • I like Nicole for several reasons, she has all the good attributes and qualities of a good person. You have to be a huge hater to dislike someone like her. I consider Dani an underdog. She had a lot to live up to and she hasn't contributed to the family name imo. Naomi and Martin seem to had more flourishing careers than she has.  She might've had a long marriage, but Bill cheated on her left and right. I am sure they had some good times, but I wouldn't call it a great marriage or anything to brag about. She modeled for what 2/3 years? That's not that successful, especially if she didn't pivot to something more lucrative. And that is the real reason she plays momanger cause she is living through Chelsea. Dani is nothing without her family name. Nicole doesn't need the Dupree; she made her own mark! And that's what you should do when you're born with privilege, flip that [!@#$%^&*]! The opportunity is there for the writers to play up her insecurities and resentment issues, but will they? There must've been a reason for her to choose Bill over someone with more status, or coming from another wealthy family. Right?  I don't expect everyone to understand her, but I do, and probably would've made her a more screw up and didn't amount to much outside having some kids.  The lack of crossover from the in-laws always bothered me, too. I hope at some point we get some family dinners. I know it's not earth-shattering entertainment, but I'm a sucker for those scenes. And you can still move the story along, too! I forgot all about my boo Jacob, and he was on today. He, for some reason, reminds me of Garfield the cat!

You're right about that hetero bio son Dupree, though.
    • The casino set needs to be upgraded or needs to go. Why would anyone rich spend their time in the wood paneled 1960’s room instead of just playing cards in what I assume is the normal nice looking casino area.
    • It wasn't his first appearance, though; per the end credits, he is a principal guest star (a.k.a. recurring).
