You can see why she was so reluctant to play Phoebe as pro-Vietnam. Of course in the end Agnes was right I'd say, as characters like Phoebe were needed to further frame characters like Amy (and later Ruth). 

I guess a similar situation arose when James Mitchell refused to have Palmer be anti-gay, although it would fit his character.

At the same time, it did give Palmer more nuance as those contradictions in people do exist and ultimately was amore interesting choice.

So they gave that SL to Opal. Jill Larson objected but  ahe said the producers said that the audience below the bible belt like Opal, so when Opal has an awakening athey hoped the biblr belt audience would too

And it fit Opal's character in a way.. even though she had Glamorama.. she still could have been old fashion about LGBTQ... and didn't the story end up being one of the elements that led to Palmer/Opal's marriage breaking up down the line?

I cant remember if that was a catalyst but i think it was more Vanessa (Marj Dusay)

From what I remember William was living in LA but no longer wanted to commute to New York so he gave up the role.  By that time, I think he was recurring so the job probably was no longer worth it to him.

What a lovely photo of Erica and Jeff's wedding! I really hope that someone out there has a copy of her weddings to Jeff and Phil to complete the collection.

Don't recall ever seeing any photos of Erica's wedding to Phil Brent. was it a church ceremony?
