Not sure how much of a bump in salary comes from jumping to associate HW to sole HW, but I wouldn't think it would be that substantial. Plus, D&D may not have been pricey, especially him, but they would've had to sign new contracts. I'd imagine that with only a couple of more months of scripts being generated, that the remainder of their contracts would need to be paid off. Simpler and cheaper to cut them loose and promote Lorraine than go through all of that with them. Maybe Lorraine needs the money. Quite possibly she wanted the HW position when she was interim writer, but Frons like D&D better, but just kept her on. I am glad Broderick and Nixon are there to pen the end.

ABC would probably make them pay for the embarrassment so it would completely undercut any gain from yanking the ads.

I just don't think the publicity garnered from this is enough to offset a strong profit if they believed these new shows were going to be a success.

Historically, it's a good chunk of change difference... but we have to keep in mind that this is just for a few months now, of course. Unless you're someone with the clout of David Canary, which K&S are not, a cancellation would always be an overriding termination of the contract. So that wouldn't have kept them from being renewed... I'm thrilled they were not.

As for Lorraine needing the money, I don't believe that's the case at all - if we're talking in the sense that she'd be "washed up" after soaps: She'd been teaching for the last several years before agreeing to return to AMC, after passing on the HW job before it was offered for the last time to McTavish: Frons wanted to transfer her from OLTL back to AMC in 2003, but her initial impression of being a HW under him, so far, wasn't the greatest. She finished out her network contract as an AHW under Malone & Griffith, went to GL for an interim stint, then became a writing professor at Drexel.... She could easily teach again. (Heck, sign me up for a class! I'd love to hear her stories...)

I do believe that she accepted the job knowing that she'd be bringing the show to an end. I'm pretty certain that's how Felicia Behr (though I'm she has other sources) knew what was coming; FB & LB have remained friends. But after all this, honestly, to me it's still pretty much a moot point what motivated Frons to hand it over to Broderick... I'm just glad it worked out that way.

People in the US, especially those aged 12 to 35 are not going to watch a daily soap opera at night. BBC America tried it with Hollyoak, and NBC tried it with a soap starring a guy from General Hospital, both attempts failed miserably. Watching a daily soap is a commitment, and people in the US just aren't used to committing that much time to a nightly TV show. Network television viewership among 18-49 year olds is declining at an amazing rate, and aside from one or two shows, like American Idol, it is really hard to lure in younger viewers.

If you agree with the idea that soaps can longer work in the daytime, then, I think, you are pretty much saying that they can no longer work in their current format. The only option, because year round daily airings aren't going to work, is to start doing 13 to 20 week seasons that air 3 to 5 times a week.

BBC America barely tried (they shifted the show to a late night slot after a month or so and then burned off most of the episodes online), and they also started in the middle of huge, incredibly complex storylines - I think if they'd chosen a better launching pad they might have had more success.

IMO, Hollyoaks doesn't count. BBC America isn't a widespread channel, the show was moved around on the schedule, accents generally turn US viewers off (never mind the fact that BBC America opted to use subtitles), and they started airing the show in the middle of huge complicated storylines.

IDK what NBC's soap with the GH guy was.

I mentioned upthread that I'd like to see a 3-a-week soap for teens/20somethings that airs in a post-primetime slot, like 10:30 (central), with a summertime break (or maybe going to just one primetime airing per week in the summer). Young people will watch soaps that appeal to them (ABC Family's pretty much got a monopoly on them), and young people will watch TV that appeal to them that air daily (or almost daily) at a certain time each night. I'm just waiting for someone to seriously put the two together and commit to putting it out there.

Does anybody know what the numbers were like for Tribes and Swans Crossing back in the day? Granted, they were not of the level of Degrassi, classic or TNG for that matter, but I still think that tweens and teens would respond well to a quality serial in the 5:00-6:00pm window. I liked when FOX was still "a joke" and didn't fill its schedule with local morning and evening news and more time was open for syndicated programming. I can't remember if it was MyNetwork or CW that aired Degrassi: TNG for 2 hrs. on Sundays but I loved that and I would like to see how it would do 5/wk on a non-cable network.

There are folks who watched The Wire with subtitles on.

How is the American Skins doing btw? I know nothing about the series other than the fact that the boy from Slumdog Millionaire was in it, seeing him interviewed was the first time I ever heard of it.

ETA: Ugh, my dog jumped up on the bed and stepped on my laptop keyboard and now I'm missing keys and the h isn't working properly so please forgive my spelling errors, I'm trying my best to correct them.

poor SFK bad dog!

Yes Skins had subtitles, Hollyoaks was normal. The airing of Hollyoaks was weird with old and new episodes next to each other, but I liked it and watched it. Usually I tried to marathon it, but it was frustrating as DVR listings couldn't pick up reruns versus new episodes.

    • Good point. It would provide some conflict with Jack. As much as I am not interested in Claire, I don't find it difficult to understand why she might be a bit reluctant  to commit to a guy who has already been divorced twice or is  3 times?before he is 30. That's a natural obstacle that Claire would be hesitant about. But in GC every relationship is true love and various past marriages are forgotten.

I’m in NYC, and I can’t help but wonder if NYC prosecutors, politicians, etc. ever felt the way that Laura did, back in the 80s-90s when they were trying to take down the mob.  “Oooh, don’t put John Gotti in prison. The guy who comes in after him might be worse”
    • Happy 18th Birthday, Sophia! I like that Tate gave her a birthday party. And that Marlena counseled him about whether or not he has feelings for Sophia, and his relationship with Holly. I like how messy Tate is and I hope he continues to be messy. He just needs to have more argument/fight scenes with Doug III

Days just needs to work a little bit more on establishing better chemistry between Tate and Sophia, but I still think that’s mostly due to Rachel Boyd. Sometimes, I think that Sophia might secretly be scheming, but with the way RB plays it, (if that’s what they’re going for), it doesn’t seem to be working. Tate was also really sweet and dorky during the party too The drug scenes didn’t do much for me though. I don’t mind that Kevin panicked and ran off with the drug once he heard Steve and Shawn coming, but I felt like that story was the weakest part of today. But I am interested in seeing what happens next. And I couldn’t help but laugh when I noticed that Steve and Shawn had matching jackets Btw, I see Mayor Price established a quid pro quo with Xander today lol I wouldn’t mind that being more than just a plot point. It could lead to some pretty good drama if it’s handled correctly. And it would be a lot better than Xander declaring war on Sweet Bits/Chanel and Felicity.  And Stephanie, finally having her mother to confide in about her life, her relationship with Alex, etc. has been one of the best things about the Paula/Jeanne episodes. The book thing still seems very Ron/Jamey-like though, mostly because it’s so centered around Alex, sort of like how GH used to make storylines about Liz all about Finn or Franco Hopefully, Stephanie talks to Kayla about the book. I’d like to hear more of her perspective on it. I also like that Kayla and Marlena were there for each other as well. These are such better ways to use all three of them. And, we got an update about John One other thing I’ve noticed about the Paula/Jeanne episodes (except for the ones that are worked on by Jamey) is that they’re longer than Ron episodes. Episodes usually clock in at around 40-41 minutes now, as opposed to 35-37, or as short as 31. I like that.
    • Also Victor being the obstacle for Kyle/Claire feels forced. If anything it should be Diane. Diane has a history of having issues with the Newmans, doesn’t she? Jack could be the one trying to reel her in while she’s meddling in Kyle and Claire’s relationship. They’re making the characters of Diane, Victoria, Nick, Sharon be way too complacent when they could have a stronger role in the younger characters like Mariah/Tessa, Kyle/Claire etc
    • A year later we had these ratings for the week of May 11-17 1987. This was probably the last time the CBS soaps (at least til Dallas’ finale) ranked this high. Dynasty had already ended its season.  CBS reran the Dallas Early Years movie on Saturday night against Golden Girls’ season finale, which was the failed Empty Nest back door pilot.  Interestingly a repeat Family Ties was #1 this week. The week before the season finale of Family Ties beat out Cosby as well, but it was Cheers that beat them both out with Diane’s exit.

I'm writing a series of essays about the first time of a LGBT character in US soaps. I already have datas about Sharon Duvall in DAYS (1977) as first Bisex, Lynn Carson in AMC (1983) as first Lesbian, Hank Elliott on ATWT (1989) as first Gay (someone have or can find the episode in which Paul Ryan finds out about Hank and does not take it very well? I have seen Hank's coming out to Iva and when Hank gets a bullet to save Paul's life from the latter evil father and when he gets tested for HIV after finding out Charlie's diagnosis, but Soap Opera Digest recaps are too much concises...) and Billy Douglas on OLTL (1992) as first LGBT teen in both daytime and primetime TV (I have seen all the episodes on You Tube. BTW, what a great storyline, why it was ignored by the Emmys? Andrew Carpenter and Billy's father players are both really great in their roles! Oh, well, if OLTL was not nominated for Best Drama in 1994 with Marty's gang rape story which won four major awards and was spectacular, no surprise at all - sadly) and I have read something about Azure in The City (1996) as first Trans, but I'd like to see the episode where Bernado finds out and Azure confirms what is said in that newspaper to have something to quote. I like quoting, it gives the essays more depth. I already read the biweekly recaps from Soap Opera Digest on Tumblr and single episodes recaps on IMDB, but I'd like to have more to write about. And something more about critics and public opinions - I only knows that the storyline was rapidly axed because of bad writing and bad performance by Carlotta Chung, but I have nothing to quote.   PS Thank you @JAS0N47 for your incredible and rich site (and work on it). In particular for the Nielsen ratings on weekly basis lists since 1974 and for everything about Sharon Duval - specially for the script of the confession episode dated 23 May 1977! I'm not a DAYS viewers (I'm Italian, I live in Italy and on You Tube there is almost nothing if not short videos), but I've seen some clips of Marlena's first possession (Deidre Hall is terrific in it! Storyline is garbage, but it has its chilling moments and it is funny - I laugh everytime I remember Kristen say to Marlena "according to the book of demonology"! Was she an espert of demons or what!? ) and read on Soap Opera Central daily recaps about infamous Melaswen (brainwashed Marlena has a particular sense of humor - killing ex alcoholic Maggie with a bottle of wine and Alice with her donuts...), so I know something about the soap. Little, but better than nothing.

    • I'm curious the motivation for keeping Bela on beyond the circus story arc.  Did he play a character like his character on EON, or was he more of a good guy? I know he ended up with Sunny at the end of the series, but I always thought that Sunny/Hogan could have been revived once the lack of chemistry between him and the NuLiza became apparent.   Actually... the NuLiza (Louan Gideon) reminded me more of Sunny than she did Liza as played by Sherry... and she just threw off the whole vibe of the show. I see Estelle has just arrived in the late October 1985 episodes, which only means that Wendy and Stephanie are soon on their way out.   It also appears that the Sarah/Quinn/Wendy triangle was set up by Mayer.. and it looks as though Tomlin is going to deactivate it by the introduction of Colleen Dion's character.   I don't understand why no one on the show thought to look at Quinn and realize that he was the problem and write him out.
