Floods, bushfires, earthquakes and god only knows what else. There is also now a tsunami warning in the pacific including Hawaii

I agree what the fu*k is this world coming too. I don't want to die if that happens anytime soon with all of these bad events happening everywhere.

The Northridge quake here in 1994 was 6.7 and there was damage 85 miles way...and I CANNOT even fathom what is happening in Japan. It's like watching a horror movie. :( The lives, livelihoods, lost. OMG.

California is on Tsunami watch...no warning though, but that's how far stuff like this reaches.

Other U.S. areas included in the warning are the territories of Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and Wake Island...also they have raised the magnitude up to 8.9.

And I agree with you....things are so crazy right now. Look at all the crippling snowstorms this year, and the places that saw snow that hardly ever do. Not to mention droughts, intense hurricanes, and just general screwed up weather pretty much everywhere anymore. Mother Nature is NOT a happy camper right now apparently...

NOAA just said that there is major water heading to Hawaii! YIKES! :(

This "Ring of Fire" is a bad, bad, thing.

ETA: California Tsunami Advisory is expected. Just means to stay off the beaches and out of the harbors.

Oh God. All I can keep thinking of is my friend Kate who is in Japan. I really am praying that she's safe. :(

Also, what if that whole 2012 thing is real. I mean, everything seems so crazy here lately. They also been thinking there's gonna be an earthquake on the New Madrid fault soon too and that's where I'm at. I'm screwed.

It's devastating.

Japan has a good system for monitoring these kinds of events (from the BBC):

It is widely thought that Tokyo is expecting another powerful quake - and that this quake is now overdue.

So Japan puts considerable effort into preparing its response systems, its infrastructure and its citizens for potential disasters.

The government has invested heavily in monitoring systems. Founded in 1952, the Tsunami Warning Service is operated by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

It monitors activity from six regional centres, assessing information sent by seismic stations both on and off-shore known collectively as the Earthquake and Tsunami Observation System.

Using this system, JMA aims to send out a tsunami warning within three minutes of an earthquake striking.

When a quake hits, data concerning the magnitude and location are immediately flashed up on television by national broadcaster NHK.

The message then adds whether a tsunami warning has been issued and if so, for which areas.

In most towns and cities, loudspeaker systems can broadcast emergency information to residents.

In some rural areas, residents also have radios distributed by the local government over which instructions to evacuate can be broadcast.

Children practise ducking under the desk in earthquake drills throughout their school years. All adults are told where their closest evacuation centre - a park or sports field, for example - is located.

Tsunami shelters

Infrastructural checks are also in place. High-rise buildings in major cities are designed so that they sway rather than shake during earthquakes, making them safer.

I agree Mother Nature is not a happy camper at the moment. Some one has pissed her off big time. Watching CNN T the moment and the are saying that Hawaii will be hit soon, but it looks like the tsuanmi is getting smaller it height. Some areas on Australia and New Zealand are on alert as well.

Well, just type Mir mine in one of the search engines to see why. Or, alternatively, check this out:

No wonder Nature isn't happy.

The entire coast of British Columbia is also under a tsunami warning. I just saw a live shot from San Fransisco and there was a man playing in the water with his dog!! :o Are these people nuts? Sure there may not be extensive damage, but the waves will be so unpredictable... someone being that reckless could easily get swept out to sea.

The pictures from Japan are absolutely horrifying. My thoughts are with everyone effected by this disaster.

I just saw where two guys in Oregon got swept off the rocks. Idiots.

There's damage in two California cities. Crescent City and Santa Cruz. Incredible isn't it? That there can be damage THIS far.

I haven't heard about Hawaii. I know they had 5-6ft waves. Was their any damage there?

It's horrible but it is something to behold. No matter what man builds, mother nature retains her right to tear it down.
