I'm watching the 2001 episodes, the show used to be so good! I love crazy Tricia.

Can someone explain to me why Jill hated Mackenzie so much? She was quite a bitch to her. I wonder what her problem was? I wasn't watching back then so if someone could explain that to me that would be great

Apart from Jill's general, well-established dislike of (most) younger women, she distrusted Mackenzie from the moment she first met her, thought her to be a conniving opportunist, and believed she was not worthy of Billy. Of course she was also beloved by Katherine, so that made things worse!

Jill hated Mac long before Billy came into the picture. She thought Mac was a scheming opportunist who was sent by Kay to torment/taunt her. It only went downhill from there.

She did think Mac had a bad attitude although, for the record, that was only Jill's interpretation. Mac was a 15 yo child who was naturally scared, closed-off, and defensive, especially against someone like Jill.

Wow. The way Y&R used to set up these storylines and interactions was so clever. Tying Jills disdain for Mackenzie into her rivalry with Katherine, thats brilliant. It also brought in a whole new set of young characters, and a couple (Billy and Mac) that people wanted to root for. It's very Shakespearean. I wish we could get storylines like this now.

Jill referred to her as A Bad Penny.

You're right that Jill didn't like her long before she became involved with Billy YRBB. She always assumed Mackenzie was working an angle (which ironically was never the case) and in fact kept helping to mend Jill & Billy's relationship despite her severe issues with Jill.

I always felt like the show amped it up in case viewers weren't supportive enough of the Billy/Mac pairing (even though many viewers were). Kay Alden was a very good writer but this was around the time the prop duty started snowballing (I think this is also when Y&R began worshiping Victor as a god rather than acknowledging his flaws the way Bill Bell always did).

Not really.

Jill was VERY in character (as YRBB said she had a history of REALLY bad relationships with ingenues & vixens).

Her low self esteem and snotty attitude coupled with her toxic feud with Katherine, tenuous interactions with the Abbotts, incredibly strained relationship with Billy and Mackenzie's introverted nature all contributed to her behavior.

One of the best things about the story though was nobody was really propped. EVERYONE had their faults. Jill caused a lot of drama during that period but Y&R never shied away from Katherine negatively contributing to their dynamic.

Y&R also did a LOT of great work in repairing Jill's other relationships during that period.

It was the best the character had been written in almost a decade by that point.

I don't think it was out of character for Jill, I just think it was overdone, with "comedy" bits like Katherine knocking her over the head, etc. And the lengthy scenes of Billy berating her. It just alienated me from the purpose of the story, because I felt like they didn't trust viewers to understand. But that's just me.

Katherine knocking her over the head wasn't played for comedy. Jess reaction shot was comedic but Katherine assaulted Jill out of extreme anger (no different than many of their usual physical altercations) & really thought she hurt Jill in the aftermath.

For every scene where Jill & Billy argued (which was usually as much due to her as him) there was an equal scene with her going to great lengths to make him happy and/or someone in their extended family defending her to him. Which given the state of her relationships with Katherine & the rest of the Abbotts by that point was a huge deal.

And Jill was not the only person Billy had tense moments (especially early on). He was quite snotty to Mackenzie, John & Katherine too.

I always have a lot of respect for your Y&R opinions, so if I ever watch any of that again I'll look at it a different way.

I don't know if anyone is interested in this but someone gave me this - it's just a short short fragment of an episode before a tape ran out. It's Casey and Matt.
