1976 Pt 8

At the trial, Ron’s lawyer, Mr. Lawrence, tries to get Chris to admit that she led Peggy to identify Ron because she, Chris, wanted to get him. But Chris replies that she actually commented to Peg that she “hoped to God it wasn’t him.” Lawrence then tries to shake Peggy’s identification by pointing out that she asked all the lineup participants to speak, thus seeming unsure even right after meeting Ron in the corridor. He adds that she admitted on record that she’d kept her eyes closed during the attack and tried to block it from her mind. Peggy can’t explain why she didn’t identify him immediately but insists she saw her assailant and it was Ron, she’s sure of that. Since he feels the prosecution’s case is not proven, Lawrence tells Ron he shouldn’t testify and rests the defense. But Ron insists upon making a statement. He brings up Nancy’s illness and Chris’s prejudice against him for concealing his prison record, saying Chris had believed him about that incident. Everyone notices how convincing Ron is indeed, Peggy says if she wasn’t his victim, she might believe him.

During the wait for the verdict Jack asks Peggy to marry him, saying that Joanne is strong enough now and he can be free. Peggy puts him off. The verdict is in and the court is reconvened. The jury foreman explains that they were instructed to return a verdict that upheld the facts in this case. Because of this, they couldn’t agree that Ron is guilty beyond all reasonable doubt. Though they morally feel one way, they must find him “not guilty.” Peggy, at first incredulous, is then outraged. She rails at the judge, the jury, and Ron, vowing he will pay for this. She berates the jury for knowing he’s guilty and letting him off because of a legal technicality. And then she’s  frightened, realizing that Ron is now free to roam the streets again.

Ironically, Mrs. Ralston arrives to help, but is too late. She tells Chris the real story: She met Ron in the bar and invited him in for a drink, and then he did rape her. Fearing humiliation, she didn’t press the rape charge, and now she is not proud of that. She adds that he then harassed her with phone calls for months. Chris takes Sharon to meet Nancy while Ron is out with Karen. They tell Nancy that Ron is a violent and dangerous man, but she refuses to listen, informing them that they’re leaving town to get away from Chris’s interference in their lives. But Ron later tells Nancy they’re staying put he’s not letting them all run him out of town, and he has unfinished business here.

When Chris begins to receive obscene phone calls  she tells Nancy this is what happened to Sharon — after Ron’s attack, but Nancy refuses to consider it  possible and believes Ron’s claim that they’re all against him.  Peggy has gone into virtal seclusion in her room since the verdict, upsetting her parents greatly. Brock Reynolds visits her and asks her to marry him. She» later goes to the Allegro to ask why, since they hardly  know one another. By late afternoon, when she returns home, she tells her father she now knows why. Brock loves everyone and did this to give her a reason to leave the house; they spent the afternoon walking together. Brock tells Jack he proposed to Peggy and she hasn’t said no. Jack presses Peggy for a commitment to him, but she can’t give him one. She explains that she doesn’t know if she loves Brock but she need his friendship. She adds that she does love Jack.

While visiting Lance, Laurie sees Vanessa's door move, and when Lance is later occupied with business, she investigates and finds herself face to face with a veiled woman, who, she discovers with astonishment, is Lance’s mother. Vanessa quickly lets Laurie know she knows all about her and has no intention of letting her have Lance, Laurie goes back to meet Lance, not mentioning her meeting with his mother, but, knowing that Vanessa can see and hear her, she accepts Lance’s invitation to accompany him on a business trip to Rome.  Laurie returns home to find that Leslie is on her way home and Brad intends to have his confrontation with her as soon as she arrives. Laurie wants to be there for him but doesn’t want to back down on the trip with Lance or it will be a victory for Vanessa. But the problem is taken out of her hands when Vanessa announces to her son that she’s ready to start the long trip out of seclusion by accompanying him to Rome. Lance then tells Laurie he can’t take her as planned; he must take someone who needs complete privacy. Laurie realizes she’s lost this round to Vanessa. But Vanessa becomes ill, and Lance’s trip is called off. When the doctor who attends her asks why she’s never had plastic surgery, she explains that her weak heart wouldn’t stand the strain of surgery.

Despite Vanessa’s constant attacks on Laurie’s character and motives and her equal, diligent efforts to convince Lance he’s actually interested in Leslie, not Laurie, Lance buys Laurie a ring, and, after giving her a choice of fingers to wear it on, they decide they are engaged. Upon learning this, Vanessa calls Laurie, telling her there will never be a wedding.  Brad spends the days before Leslie’s return memorizing everything in their apartment and rehearsing his confrontation with her so that he can continue his charade. Seeing him in their home upon her return gives Leslie false hope that he’s come back, but he soon tells her he’s there to discuss a divorce. Leslie is hurt by this confrontation but later, remembering his letter, is still not convinced that he no longer loves her and decides she must see him again. But finally Leslie is convinced he no longer loves her and agrees he can get a divorce. She won’t use her baby to bring him back. Snapper is now aware of what Brad’s doing but is bound on both sides by doctor-patient confidences and can say nothing.

Y&R 1976 Pt 9

Learning that Kay is taking Ralph’s rejection very badly, Bill goes to visit her. Without regard to his condition (Bill has emphysema and only one, a damaged lung) she smokes in his presence, causing him to collapse. She administers oxygen and calls for help but now feels terribly guilty. Bill, knowing there isn’t much time left, asks Snapper not to hospitalize him until the very end and considers smoking a cigarette, which would solve the problem quickly and inexpensively for the family. Liz is furious to learn that he’s considered  this—it would be tampering” with God’s will.

Kay is still feeling so guilty, she refuses to attend Bill’s birthday party but sends a two-hundred-dollar check, saying she’s cutting down on her cigarette and liquor consumption this month for him. Liz is reassured when Kay tells her that Snapper’s being on staff at the hospital will mean no hospital bills for Bill, But  Kay is unaware that this medical courtesy extends to Doctor's wives and children only.

Chris feels Snapper is being overly pessimistic about his father’s condition until she notices that Bill is becoming confused about people and time. Greg insists Snapper’s wrong, as Bill is always better by evening. But when Snapper becomes firm about hospitalizing his father, Bill, objecting, collapses and has to be taken in now. Liz and Greg refuse to face the fact that Bill won’t be coming home this time.

Learning from Brock that. Snapper’s hospital affiliation won’t cover Bill’s astronomically mounting bills, Kay responds to Brock’s suggestion that she cover the costs by insisting that Jill will have to come and ask. When she does, Kay informs Jill she may have the  money if she signs an affidavit stating that her child is not Phillip’s. Bitterly, knowing she has to do it for her family, Jill writes out the affidavit Kay dates and signs it, taking the check Kay has prepared. Brock praises his mother for her generosity until he  notices Jill’s signed declaration; then he tells his mother she will never know peace of mind through a lie.

Snapper lets his father sign a right-to-die statement for his own peace of mind, but informs the family privately that it’s not legally binding. |

Jack gives Peggy a ring, saying she saying she can put it on when she’s ready. Peggy starts to think about the things Brock has told her about still being the same person no matter what Ron did, and decides she loves Jack enough to want to marry him. When Joanne sees Peggy displaying Jack’s ring, she’s hurt that he couldn’t even wait one more day until their divorce becomes final and starts eating out of frustration. When Jack tries to make her see reason, she throws him out. But Peggy goes to her and comes down hard on her, finally getting through to her who she’s hurting by this, and Joanne throws all the junk food out.

Stuart, believing Leslie’s story that Brad’s mother is sick and they are with her, calls Mrs. Elliot and finds out they’ve never been there. Laurie tells Leslie this so she can put her parents’ minds at rest. She finally tells them she has been staying with Laurie, as Brad’s asked for a divorce, but she’s not sure she’s going to file for one. Stuart confronts Brad with the idea of talking some sense into him but comes away unaware of Brad’s blindness, due to a brilliant performance by Brad, and sure his daughter is well rid of him.

Vanessa takes delight in upsetting Laurie by telling her she’s second choice with Lance, that Leslie would be his first choice if she were available. When Laurie retaliates by informing Vanessa that she and Lance will be married within two weeks, Vanessa hires a private investigator to check Laurie out. Laurie now feels she must be married to Lance before he finds out Leslie’s marriage is breaking up, and begs Brad to hold off the divorce until she has accomplished this. But when Leslie herself tells Lance of her marital situation, Laurie finds herself suspiciously examining Lance’s reactions to Leslie at every turn.

Thanks @Paul Raven

There are aspects of Peggy's story I wish I could see, like her reaction to the verdict. There are also parts which feel convoluted. And it seems like Brock was almost paired with every woman on the canvas but Liz Foster and Vanessa Prentiss.

Bill collapsing because Katherine selfishly smokes is a hilarious image. And this lady later became the town saint.

No matter how many times I read about the Brad blindness story, something about it still seems gross to me.

Rewatching some of 1991 I had to appreciate what a strong week March 5-12 1991 was. Cassandra dies, Nina shoots David, Sheila switces the babies, and drunk Nikki all occurring simultaneously.

1991 and 92 were pretty strong overall.

Laurie and Lance accompany Leslie to her Denver concert and she relies me on Lance for support.Unbeknownst to Leslie, Brad has had the operator make a special connection to the concert hall so he can hear her concert. The Maestro, realizing Leslie’s emotional torment over her failing marriage, tries to persuade her to tell Brad about the baby, and when she refuses, he writes a letter to Brad betraying Leslie’s confidence. After another fight with her mother about how learning about her parentage has upset her life, Laurie confides to Leslie that she feels cut off, outside.

Stuart overhears this conversation, and Leslie has to tell him the whole story. She tries to explain fairly how Jennifer had left Stuart and actually only spent one night with Bruce, and faced the truth about Laurie only when she was forced to. Stuart is livid over this |betrayal and wants to confront his wife ‘now, but her doctor calls. Her one-year mastectomy checkup was fine, but he’s discovered irregularities in her cardiogram and doesn’t want her under any stress until further tests can be made. Stuart assures Leslie he won’t tell her mother he knows about Laurie until he can do it calmly, and doesn’t tell his daughter about the cardiogram.

When Chris continues to receive obscene calls, Snapper goes straight to the Beckers’. Ron insists he was home with Nancy, and she corroborates this. When she steps between an advancing Snapper and her husband, screaming, “We don’t have a telephone. He couldn't have called Chris,” Snapper finally has to believe her, and he leaves. But moments later Karen tells Nancy that Daddy went out while Mommy was in the shower. Ron insists it was just a few moments, for cigarettes. Nancy lets it pass, but the next morning finds a whole carton of cigarettes in a drawer  and asks why he went out. Ron coldly tells her she’d  better pull herself together, she’s letting this thing with Chris make her a little insane.

Nancy ponders telling Chris but decides that all Chris would do is  badmouth Ron again, and she and Karen have no one but Ron and can’t leave him. When a telephone-installation man arrives with their new phone, Nancy asks him not to put it in. But Ron arrives and orders the installation made, telling Nancy she’s trying to run his life, as his mother did. When Nancy tries to call Chris, Ron frighteningly tells Nancy he’s done  everything they said he did, but it’s all her fault, as she never gave him what he needed. When he informs her he’s taking Karen away from her before she can ruin her, Nancy collapses in a catatonic state. Ron then calmly calls the hospital and requests help for his wife, “Fran Jackson,” who has had a breakdown.

Laurie, seeing the extent to which Vanessa will go to keep Lance to herself, warns Lance that his mother’s possessive feelings are unhealthy. Lance suggests Vanessa will consider Leslie a threat also when he learns that Les and Brad are divorcing and things will get easier.

As soon as the hospital attendants leave with Nancy, Ron dials Legal Aid and has Karen tell Chris she’s all alone. Stopping only to leave a message for Snapper about where she’s going, Chris rushes to the Beckers’ apartment, only to realize that Ron’s tricked her. Ron sends Karen out of the room and, after expressing his hatred for all women, tells Chris he’s going to prove to her he’s a man. But Karen wanders back in as he has Chris pinned to the wall, and Ron’s mind snaps when he realizes his daughter has seen his perverted side. After smashing the wall mirror, he runs out, and Greg, terrified at learning where Chris is, arrives to find her comforting Karen. Chris takes Karen home, and after several days of fruitless searching for Nancy, she applies for temporary guardianship of Karen.

Peggy and Jack set a New Years Eve wedding date, but Stuart is terribly upset to realize how irrational and incomplete Peggy’s plans are. When she suddenly makes all pertinent decisions in the space of a half-hour, Stuart tells Jack this doesn’t indicate certainty, but rather proves his point—she’s just trying to convince herself that the rape didn’t affect hers and it did.

A chance remark by Stuart shocks Laurie into realizing he knows she’s not his natural daughter. When she hysterically screams out her alienation and her innate feeling that she was always 'different' he assures her with tears in his eyes that since they really love each other sincerely, it makes no difference; she’ll always be his daughter. Stuart explains that Jen still doesn’t know he has learned the truth, and he would like it to continue that way.

In helping Brad pay his bills, Laurie finds Maestro Fausch’s letter and tells Brad that Leslie is pregnant. Ironically, to get to him with this news, she had to get |away from Leslie, and used a meeting with Lance as an excuse. When ‘Lance arrives soon after, he’s angry that Laurie lied, and she later has to explain that she has been helping Brad. Understanding her motives, — Lance agrees that she should continue to press him to |reconcile with Leslie. Brad, however, still won’t reconsider—in fact, the news makes him even more resolute. But Vanessa has had Laurie followed, and hits Leslie with a double blow. She gives her the report saying this proves her sister is involved with her husband, and then assures Leslie that Lance loves her, — not Laurie. Badly confused and hurt, Leslie lashes out by kissing Lance while he sits with her at the piano. Leslie then waits at the apartment for Laurie, and when she arrives, she bitterly accuses her of having an affair with Brad. Laurie angrily assures Leslie she  was with Brad with Lance’s full knowledge and that Leslie’s anger means she still loves Brad. She then explains to Leslie that Brad left her because he’s blind. In shock, Leslie rushes home to confront Brad, furiously berating him for treating her like a child who cannot decide for herself. But Brad, even with Leslie now aware of the situation, refuses to reconcile with her. When Leslie tells Laurie how unreasonable Brad has been, Laurie suggests that Leslie stop seeing everything from her own angle only.

I found an update of my favorite lil Phillip from '91-93! Played by twins Scott and Shaun Markley.

Neither bio mentions their stint on YR

Interestingly, AFAIK they were never listed in the cast credits. I guess it was always considered an under-5 role.  Courtland Mead was credited in '93, I guess he had more dialogue.

Wow thanks!  I always wondered their names in real life! They were my favorite little Phillip too!

They grew up to be handsome boys! Shaun especially could still be “Chance” today if he continued to pursue acting.

1976 Pt 11

Laurie confronts Vanessa to tell her the little plot failed and she will marry Lance no matter what Vanessa tries. As a parting shot, Laurie reminds Vanessa that she has three things Vanessa doesn’t: beauty, youth, and sex. Laurie then accompanies Lance to South America, as he’s got a lead on Lucas. But they are dismayed to find they’ve  arrived just hours before Luke took off.

Liz thanks Kay for agreeing to cover Bill’s hospital bills but returns the ring of Phillip’s that Kay had given her for the baby, saying Kay wouldn’t have demanded that Jill write the affidavit had she not known in her heart that the baby was Phillip’s. Kay continues to insist not, but gives Liz the affidavit. Learning that Kay has returned the statement, Jill is terrified she will renege on the bills and hurries to Kay’s. Kay assures her that the bills will be paid, and Jill gratefully asks Kay to visit her father. But Bill, accidentally handed his bill, has been trying to leave the hospital, and when Kay and Jill arrive, the bed is empty. Jill becomes hysterical.

Bill is brought back in, and once Jill has assured herself at he’s all right, she explains to Kay that the way she learned Phillip was dead was to walk into his  room and find the bed empty. Kay painfully replies that she discovered his death when she happened to see the announcement in an old newspaper; no one had ever told her.

Bill asks Brock to say a few words over him when he’s gone, as he doesn’t want a formal eulogy. Brock agrees to do this. At Greg’s insistence, Bill is being released to go home to die, but he suffers a sad attack and has to be placed on a respirator. Snapper has to admit to Liz that this is the end—he’ll never be off the machine, and the pain won’t stop until it’s over. Liz slips back into the hospital after visiting ours to be with her husband, and when he begs her ‘to help him out of the unbearable pain, Liz, out of love, pulls the plug on the respirator.

Snapper walks in. and realizes instantly what Liz has done. He takes her home, suggesting that she not tell Jill and Greg, as they might not understand it was what their father wanted. Only then does he remember the plug. He returns to replace it, but Nurse Warner has discovered Bill dead and the respirator unplugged and is looking for him. He suggests that someone might have already found Bill dead and unplugged it but her conscience bothers  her, and she later tells the administrator, who orders an investigation.

Bill’s funeral is simple and dignified, with Brock speaking the thoughts Bill had wanted expressed. Kay,who hates funerals, comes out of respect for Bill and his family. Brock has convinced his mother to ask Joanne to live with her; he feels Kay must not be alone and —that Joanne could help her while saving money by not having to rent an apartment while attending college. Kay, drinking again, tries to lure Joanne into breaking her diet, but, after only one brief lapse, Joanne’s self-control is intact. Kay finally admits to Joanne that she drinks out of loneliness but it doesn’t help, because when she’s sober again the loneliness |returns. Despite Kay’s dislike of holidays and her own inability to eat fattening things, Joanne plans a full Christmas dinner to make the holiday a happy one.

And I’d love to see that beautiful smile a lot more There’s just one problem… that should’ve been sent packing with Uncle Ron
    • Yet another reason some of the characters need servants.  Since some of the sets do not include front doors, servants could answer the off-screen door and escort guests into the living room(s).
    • I remember them showing a map of Michigan during one of Rachel's adventures, and you are probably correct here.  But the map may have been used in 1978, when Sven kidnapped Rachel and characters were searching for her. They had no idea Sven had hidden her right there on the Cory estate.  So that's just another possible sighting of the infamous map.
    • The one thing that drives me nuts about this show is that all these wealthy people never lock their doors and everyone just walks in without even knocking.  I live out in the boonies with no neighbors close by, but I always have my doors locked day or night!
    • All the best people are at the bottom of the list. Lauren, Michael, Chloe, Traci, Ashley, Mariah, Sharon, Amanda, Devon. I’d rather see more of these people than anyone in the top 10.. (with the exception of Jack and Diane) because I am still enjoying their scenes.
    • The live video tribute to Drake last night with current and former actors Thread with link to video: https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/68987-days-currentformer-actors-live-video-tribute-for-drake-hogestyn  They said that the episodes were filmed out of order over a span of time. As we already knew, re: the upcoming memorial service (not spoiling the airdate here)... the memorial service was taped *before* Drake passed away, and then the studio was on a preplanned hiatus, and the actors learned of his passing during the hiatus. New info from the video last night, is that some of what recently aired (such as June 3rd episode ) was taped *after* the hiatus, so after Drake passed away. Maybe I misunderstood what Martha Madison said, but it sounded that way. My god, I don't know how the actors filmed it, especially Diedre.
    • I did not expect Peter Reckell to be the one to break my heart today. Incredible scenes with Bo and his family.
    • Barbara, to me, is a mixture of Florence Ballard and Betty McGlown/Barbara Martin (both McGlown and Martin were part of the Primettes before they became a trio and were renamed the Supremes).
    • Maeve Kincaid said in interviews that she misses slapping Jordan Clarke's face..something along the lines "He knew how to take a slap!"   Or voodoo dolls..LOL!
    • Staci Greason was in Paris during this live tribute, which would have been in the middle of the night where she was. So Fairman arranged to pretape Greason earlier in the same day, and then spliced her part into the end of the video after the live feed, and it's all on the same youtube.
