I kinda want to see this but it is making a mockery of the original show. Just imagine if they made OLTL or AMC a comedy movie about 20 or 30 years from now SMH. Viki/Niki as a comedic plot instead of Oscar worthy drama shutter to think

Sadly I think the last few years of OLTL already took care of that.

It's about what I expected - Tim Burton and Johnny Depp defecating on themselves and fliging their product at the screen. Two hacks ruining a fun show. No thanks.

Tim Burton movies always seem to get the same reaction, although critics have lost interest over the years (they were not fond of that Alice in Wonderland bastardization). I do wonder if this will get any box office. This is going to be alien to most viewers, and treating it as a joke will just lose more interest. Like his old flop Mars Attacks.

It's not even a mockery of the show--I hate to sound like a comic book fanboy but WHY BOTHER. As with Alice, just invent your own fantay and go with it. You could so easily do a vamnpire comes to terms with modern culture movie set in the 60s

I think even his fans have--as you said by the comments on the webpage. It's so lazy. And he has HUGE talent as a filmaker--I'll never deny him that. But since Sleepy Hollow (at least) has largely been re-using the same things.

I saw the trailer and it looks like it's going to be great.

I've seen every Dark Shadows episode and lets face it, it was a comedy, albeit not intended to be. From the trailer, I like the direction they are going and I'm hoping the movie is a fun ride.

There was some camp, but there were some very strong, serious moments.

I think camp that works is camp which isn't intentional. This type of forced camp is very hard to do. The only person who used to make it work was John Waters.

The campiness was a HUGE part of the appeal of the series, and any fan who denies that is, IMHO, well in denial. But this is simple, obvious comedy. I would have been impressed if Burton had managed to capture the campy quality in a movie that took itself more seriously. As it stands this could be ANY product--why bother using Dark Shadows and its characters? Burton was at his best (way way way back) when he worked on his own creations--maybe he should go back to that. It's completely lazy.

I would argue this isn't even camp. It's flat out comedy, which is pretty different.

I thought it was great and paid homage to the original series in many different surprising ways. The Laura story, Quentin, Maggie Evans and so many other things were integrated which surprised me. Also the cameo with the original stars was extremely brief, but so touching. I wish they'd made Lara Parker or Kathryn Leigh Scott Mrs. Johnson or something. I LOVED Carolyn and David in this film and the actress playing Victoria was perfect. The only real letdown was the ending, which felt rushed.

Another thing--the film is NOT a comedy at all. The only comedic bits are whats featured in the trailer. Beyond that it's mostly played straight and the family is pretty dark and complicated. Michelle Pheiffer is a surprising delight and very powerful force as Elizabeth. I think had they come up with a better marketing plan this could've been a huge franchise. It's a shame it'll end up as a stand alone film because they set up a lot of future films well. Whoever decided to market as a comedy needs to be fired.

I refuse to pay to see it. This is how a good friend, whose opinion I trust but has NOT watched the show, said it went (he also said the group of guys he saw it with, two of whom didn't even know there was a tv show, hated it):

I saw it this morning and really was disappointed. The trailer/commercials had significantly lowered my expectations, but I didn't think it would be as bad as it was.

The have gutted the property of anything that made the show endearing. It is Dark Shadows in name only. There is no connective tissue, other than character names, to tie this to the source material.

Aside from that it's just a poorly constructed film. It starts out as Victoria's story, but quickly drops her once Barnabas is introduced. There is almost no plot. It's basically a series of jokes about how Barnabas is shocked by life in the 70s. We've seen this story many times before, and done much better. Plus it has little to do with the Dark Shadows brand I suspect. This isn't even a fun spoof like The Brady Bunch movie. I was happy for it to be over.

On Metacritic the reviews seem to run the gamut--the New York Times loved it, yet sent out one of their C level critics for some reason, not Scott.

    • Eddie has begun uploading the 1990 episodes. I'm so happy about that. I was mindfully taking a break till there's plenty of episodes I can binge watch when I feel like it. Now that 1989 is complete... I can't wait to press play on February 1989 and resume where I left off.

Me when someone asks me to be proper and demure.
    • This is just a guess but I feel like the fact that they keep mentioning her dead husband is for a reason. We know Martin has a secret that likely involved someone dying. Martin's victim could be Alan which Leslie/Dana either knows about or finds out and she uses that to blackmail the family into letting her crimes slide.
    • Just thinking how the Ruth/Leticia guest spot really cemented how Days had changed. Stunt casting with a campy/comedy character in a 'wacky' storyline was something that a few years previously would have been completely out of place on Days (and most other soaps for that matter).
    • I am interested to see how they handle Leslie/Dana down the road. If she continues in this path, it would be unrealistic to have her around. Like other shows have done this with a 'villian' character and ended up with people looking stupid putting up with someone they detest. Another thought-could they be building up to a murder story? Maybe Les/Dan will be left in a coma and we will have a whodunit with several characters as suspect. It would also be a chance to redeem her I wonder how long the show will go w/o resorting to soap cliche stories-twins,switched at birth, murder mystery, long lost child etc
    • Yeah, Martin really did make me laugh when him and Smitty jumped up to drag Leslie out. I am interested in seeing how this fallout will impact his storyline as well. Especially since he is so protective regarding his family/family's image. I am interested in seeing how he will interact with Eva for the time being, they did have a warmer interaction earlier on once they met. But he seems to have doubts about her possibly being Ted's right now. I wonder how long it might take for him to come around with her. I could see the younger generation warming up to her quicker than the older ones. Though of course I think there will be anger/tension for a while regarding the reveal and her role in it. Perhaps Naomi/Chelsea will ease up on Eva first then eventually Martin/Kat might down the line. I really do love Nicole. I'm glad that DD is playing her. She really is the heart of the family and also agree the show. She is so easy to root for and I'm looking forward to seeing how things work out for her. I am enjoying the development of most of the characters on this show. I enjoy most of them including Bill with his trifling self lol. I do feel that Bill's love for his daughters is genuine and that gives him some depth. A few of the characters I don't care for that much (like Bill, Ashley, Vanessa). I wasn't too big on Andre at first, but I am warming up more to him as the actor is settling into the role. I like most of the characters on this show. Also, I am interested in seeing what happens if Eva indeed goes and lives with the new doctor that was introduced. I could see this adding another layer to her story, maybe she will become more vixen-ish, on what type of relationship they end up having. And/or maybe she will end up becoming more hardened as she deals with being an outcast, especially if she falls out with Leslie as well. I think that AM will do a good job of showcasing the different layers of this character as she deals with the fallout of the affair/paternity reveal.

Got another sad news from the Bahamian community (not a celebrity)  https://www.instagram.com/p/DJMSrYCgyes/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== Former Bahamian Senate President J Henry Bostwick, Husband of former 1st Bahamian Female Cabinet Minister Dame Janet Bostwick is dead yesterday on his 86th birthday.    Thanks and for those who've aren't familiar with the talk shows in The Bahamas on this thread here, his talk show named The Freedom March with Dr Rodney Moncur that airs on ILTV and The Beat 103.5 FM Nassau every weekday afternoons. IIRC, he suffered a illness before he died.  Here's the link for his final taping of the show before his death: https://ewnews.com/this-is-powerful-rodney-moncurs-final-sign-off/

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
