GH: July Discussion Thread

Pretty much! What the GH writers won't do to avoid using a vet onscreen. I like ML, she's a wonderful actress, but how nice would it have been for GRAM to be Liz's sounding board instead of random, Nik-pimping, hospital patient? Gram is good for babysitting the brood, she just doesn't know squat about what Elizabeth needs like that strange woman she met just a few weeks ago.

I highly doubt that, they hire who they know will deliver and if that means another FOJ then it's a FOJ.

I think Guza's interview was bang on - and has been something I've believed for ages - they already have so much wealth on GH and there's just no room for anyone else at the moment, especially when well known names outside of soapland can drop in for a short stint and bring a little extra attention with them. The problem with other seasoned soap actors is the assumption that they will stick around. That layer isn't added to short-term stints like Shirley or Franco.

I think the build up was obvious. The last few days with Warren not getting anyone to budge on Kiefer's guilt ('cause they knew it was true), Sonny nailing Warren as an abuser himself, Kristina finally standing up to Warren, and then Lucky showing no interest in taking Warren's side even though he had to pry Michael off the man. There was a visual snap in that final incident that could be seen from miles away. I didn't know about the gun either, but given how Warren believes he can make anything happen I'm not surprised he had one.

I don't think he had it in the conference room, but that doesn't preclude him from taking it from someone nor does it preclude Franco aiding in Warren's gun acquisition when the targets were the kids Jason protects. My experience of GH is that almost every WTF is answered within the next 3 episodes. I'm expecting that question to rise quite quickly.

And pass the brownies to Mac - he actually saw a crime ABOUT to be committed and tried to do something about it. COOL!!! 'Cause that never happens.

YES!

No more of that stupid beaded beanie! No more of those god awful plastic baubles. No more of her clutching her stupid reading glasses and waving her hands all over the place.

I still say her death should've come weeks ago... after Beulah Epiphany beat her to death with the phone receiver after she got on the PA system hocking her wares!

Beulah has been annoying me alot less lately. Maybe the writers(and especially the directors) have taken the hint from viewers and have decided to really make her less 1940's caricature. Her scenes have been considerably less "stereotypical."

I was very surprised too and not in a good way.

I'm not saying Warren's anger wasn't built up to. But for a man(a rich lawyer at that) to all of a sudden stop believing in the justice system because the entire town turned a blind eye to some kid beating the crap out of him. Someone like Warren would have done everything in his power to continue degrading Kristina, protecting his son, etc.

Warren bringing a gun in a hospital and "shooten 'em up" doesn't fit for me. And neither does...

I still think, whether they explain the gun or not(and I don't think they will), it was still a cheap, lazy device. It was like watching some sophomoric playwright trying to add drama at the last minute to keep the audience in their seats.

I think it comes down to viewers not feeling a lot of sympathy for Kristina (or Ethan) so this was a way to get that across, and also because the show never had any idea what to do with the character in the first place. Beyond getting Kristina closer to Sonny they seemed to never have any real point for any of this plot.

Eric, Carly is still in 'vegeance demon' mode, BL has just decided she wants Johnny.

I wish the writers had resisted the temptation to have Warren fault Kristina as he lay (dying?)

Is soap writing so awful that even once-good actors turn complete ham when they're cast? I think James Franco is horrible.

Maybe the director is (in part) at fault?

No.

----

Man, today's show is such crap. Total garbage.

This performance art stuff is such asinine nonsense. Please Guza and Jill, do us a favor and never invite this "actor" back to GH.

The hospital stuff is equally as ridiculous.

Franco has treated the whole thing as a joke, so he probably doesn't take any real interest in how his performances come across.

I still wonder why it was worth the effort, other than those at ABC Daytime thinking their soaps are unworthy unless a "name" is involved. The ratings have either dropped or not budged for most of his appearances.

In regards to this Franco story/showdown with Jason:

Is there really any difference between Franco's art fans who mindlessly praise his "work" and those who bow at the feet of Sonny Corinthos (half the population of Port Chuck basically)? It almost seems as GH is making fun of itself by portraying Franco's art fans as brain dead human beings oblivious to the fact that he's a serial killer.

What on God's green earth made them think this guy was worth a location shoot, getting behind on the production schedule, and shoehorning him into everyone else's stories and lives.

The directing(the hospital scenes and the art exhibit) is all so rushed and very amateurish. I'll be glad when this sh!t is over.

    • Maeve makes a few sporadic appearances, but returns full-time the next spring/summer. She's back in time to see Bill and Michelle graduate, although she skulks around town and wasn't going to tell anyone she was alive.
    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.    Interesting, so I'm curious to see who they eventually pair Phillip with. They're flirting with a Phillip/Annie pairing, but I'm not sure if they'll go that route with the Jeva drama, her growing pill addiction, and Rick's past with her.  Ugh, yeah I'm so sad to see Bridget do a total 180 in the last couple weeks. She has always been a strong character from what I've seen, but now she's just bending over backwards to get Hart to love her and it reeks of desperation. Yeah, sure, this new Hart is eye candy, but I'm already tired of seeing Hart/Dinah have sex all over Springfield and the Cayman Islands haha.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
    • I can see Kim being that way. Well, Kyle didn't have to say yes. LOL. The suicide attempt feels plot-driven. I don't know if even Long could've made it work. She'd spent so much time trying to make Reva and Kyle into a couple, it feels odd to just have them give up. Not to mention how odd it is to have Maeve agree to marry him. Re Charita---surely they could've at least tried  finding clips with who was still there. Maybe they wouldn't have been "big" moments, but surely she'd interacted with Ross, Vanessa, and Henry. Vanessa had dated Ed, FCOL. But Mo and Rick were there---surely they could've bothered to find some clips of her with them (and they did interact a fair amount) and used them. And with Ed they could've found some shot of her talking to him and just not cut to whoever was playing Ed in the clip. That to me is what feels lazy---they had more than a year to figure it out, and they went with a bunch of photos. If you were sort of centering it on Rick anyway---then find clips with them and use 'em.
    • I definitely think it's time to write off Nina for good. I think her killing Drew might actually be a good idea. She could completely lose it after losing both Sasha and Willow and she ends up murdering Drew and eventually she gets caught and sent away to prison for a long time.
    • I hope it's okay to post this here(as in from DC)
    • Quick question - did Christie and Leann share any scenes together in the '80s before Leann left the show?
    • This is the perfect way to encapsulate the situation. So many morally-reprehensible stories were foisted on the show and its characters in ATWT's dwindling years. Rape should never be used as a cheap plot device or in a way that degrades the victim. Jack's sexual assault was another heinous example of how nasty the the show's tone had become. The fact that people like Hogan Sheffer, Ron Carlivati, Jean Passanante, Charles Pratt, Dena Higley, etc., somehow end up winning awards for their material, decimates the credibility and integrity of the awards, IMHO. Soaps used to have a solid moral core and did not originally wallow in the gutter, rolling around in filth and depravity just to be cool, hip, campy, or whatever else modern-day PTB aim for. Thank you. Cruelty, degradation and misogyny are not components which lend themselves to successful soaps, which have always been predicated on warmth, family bonds, and providing a comforting haven for their audience. The genre has been crippled because the cynical and ignorant executives in charge understand neither the shows nor what the audience wants to see.
