She played Gertrude in an off-Broadway production of Hamlet a few seasons ago and I really wish I had seen it. I'm being naive and closed minded about her ability with Rachel's wicked ways which is unfair since I don't even know her work as Tara. And Lemay had his plans for Rachel anyway so she wouldn't have had to play that for terribly long ayway. Some older fans online once talked about the rumors of AW luring Susan Lucci over from AMC when RS was leaving, so it is ironic to see this news about KLG.

I heard NBC offered Lucci a role on any of their soaps in the 80s. I wonder if that was true.

Its interesting though because KLG tried out for Erica and Lucci tried out for Tara. I could see Lucci as Tara, but I don't think I could EVER see anyone in the role of Erica except for Susan. I wonder though, if Lucci played Tara if she'd still be on today and if the role of Erica would have just disappeared the way Tara did with Gorney in the role.

It's tough to say, as I can't really see KLG as Rachel or Harding Lemay being inspired by her. But who knows, he might have been. I think KLG would have been more suited to a show like Ryan's Hope.

I also think that one of the reasons Tara disappeared may have been some of KLG's issues - for instance, she was out in 1977 because she wanted the character to change and they didn't. Of course she was probably right.

In late 1977 Karen was basically let go from the role - she said it was fine with her, as she had asked them to change Tara (mature her, I guess) and they wouldn't.

I think the problem with Jeff and Tara is that they were duplicated by other characters - Jeff by Chuck and to some degree Linc. Tara was fairly unique for AMC in the 70's but they burned through a lot of story with her and someone like Nina, or Donna, who sort of fulfilled the same story purpose, came in. Then by the time story was there which should have brought these characters back, AMC had moved into more glamorous territory.

It also seems like a lot of AMC's roles in the 70's and early 80's were unable to catch on after a popular actor left. It doesn't even seem like they really tried with Jeff (just a few short recasts that went nowhere).

I don't really know. To me it seems like a lot of AMC's characters in the 70's were very one-dimensional, and they tended to repeat similar stories year in and year out. If you were playing saltier characters, like Erica or Phoebe, this must have been fun, but for the stalwart characters it must have been a big drag.

They did try to make some story changes with characters like Ruth but it would always go back to a safe outcome.

I do not remember any of the Taras besides KLG making a very brief appearance when Kelsey was on the show and they made her look very matronly. I guess I shouldn't say matronly because to be fair, Erica was being dressed in that professional look of the time as well, the suits and all. But Tara had her hair in a french roll with grey streaks which I remember as looking unnatural. If they were natural, KLG has since dyed her hair. But I wonder if KLG had stayed on would they have written a more Viki and Dorian type ongoing rivalry for them leaving less (any??) room for Brooke.

I thought they made her look ridiculous. I think that was to try to sell her as being the mother to middle-aged Chris Lawford but it didn't work. The whole return was frustrating as she was mostly just there as a Kelsey prop and then never seen again. There was also the stuff with her husband, which rumor has it was going to be revealed as her husband being lovers with Michael Delaney.

The only times I've seen Tara besides the few 70's glimpses like her wedding and her early days is when Nancy Frangione appeared at Kate's funeral.

    • Also, someone knocked over the head (usually in the D Mansion) and imprisoned in the secret tunnel room or whatever it was. I swear that must have happened at least a dozen times the last few years, and each time it drove me crazy!

    • 5-9   Honestly? There's nothing going on. And yet unlike Y&R, I'm not bored. But I just think that's because of the acting going on as they play the beats in this Liam dying storyline. Well, that and the outfits.   If there's anything I'm liking it's the continued drama of Daphne going after Carter and not letting anyone get in her way. Not Brooke. Not Katie. NO ONE.    And while I love TK in those glasses, I am not here for a Brooke/Ridge/Taylee triangle.    And of course, Luna would try to use this Liam mess to get closer to Finn.   Okay week.
    • The acting during those Sarah scenes on Friday was horrific.
    • So true. Their hypocrisy is on another level. When Anita called Ted a coward because he used Bill as a fixer, I almost choked on my Ritz. And Dani calling Ted worse than Bill as a husband because Bill never pretended to be a good person? Then why stay with him for decades and continue to kiss up to him, Dani? I was glad when Bill told Anita he wouldn't be her punching bag. Not for me. I can think of 100 other actors who would have smoking hot chemistry with LB. Lindstrom does not. I see zero chemistry. None. Joey isn't sexy or scary.   -- Mona was awesome today. -- Why was Eva playing cards in the back room of the casino? -- Can they make Anita any more sanctimonious and self-righteous? -- Dani said Anita had Ted shook. LOL. Really?       No. But I see what you're trying to do. This is a SOAP OPERA. Characters HAVE to make mistakes and sin and screw up and cheat. That's the deal. I understand the concern that we have 2 leading Black men who have cheated on their wives. I do. But I also understand that this is SOAPS 101. Are we going to hear complaints every time a Black character messes up???
    • Gone are the days where at least once every week, a character would pull a gun on someone (Ron you really turned gun violence into a joke on this show)
    • Oooooo I like these. I like we are on the same page about Little Brownie Man. And I hope to remember this at the end of June to see how much of it came to pass. I definitely feel that the Eva vs Kat story is about to reaaaally get going.    As for the B/C stories, it's funny you mentioned the Joey/Vanessa/Doug story first. Because out of all of those, it is the only one that has enough structure and build to it that it could keep going as a B story that could eventually climax. I think the only POV we don't have in it is Joey's at this point because Month 2 put in the work to give us Doug's and Vanessa's and they are now circling each other and their relationship. And we still need to know Joey's endgame.   Why we gotta pick on Jacob and Naomi? We need that goody good couple. lol. They talked about how they got together. Mind you, very briefly. But we do need to know a little bit more about both. Something I was hoping we were getting by having them in their own stories....him with the crooked cop, her with the lawsuit...but it didn't turn out as hoped. Hopefully, that won't be the case with June though.   Yeah, I want to see more of THAT Ashley.  I finally had to break down and explain to my manager why I keep laughing every time I see the bottle of Febreze at work. The product placement definitely be working.

    • That is a specific example where I would agree with those fans so I would be critical of the execs doing so. I frankly think that "caring" in this regard is not conducive to dialog. Basically you point out its very subjective nature. What is caring to one person might be callous disregard to another. I suggest it is a trap & we fell in it!
