You and your charming way with words Ruxton

And I know the commentators have to say something--but the stupid Canadian ones, when the Georgian team entered with black armbands in remembrance of their dead Luger, said "and this team will gain SO much strength from these ceremonies to help them get over their loss." They will? How?

What a terrible way to start the games. :( Why did they build the luge course beside huge pillars??? That's so stupid. They should have like snow, or clear ground in case someone slips off the course.

Anyway, I am looking foward to these games, especially the men's hockey - naturally of course since Canada is hockey country. 2006 was such a disappointment, especially coming off that freakin awesome 2002 win.

GO CANADA GO!!!!!!!!

The 2002 win was absolutely glorious. I will remember it for the rest of my life and generally I hate/am completely disinterested in sports.

For patriotic sake,

GO CANADA GO!

Well Toups doesn't post in many of the same threads I do sad.gif Sorry if I offended you, Toups--I wouldn't want anyone to think I was a dirty American either biggrin.gif

I thought he was American too at first when I joined but then found out by his posts that he was Canadian. No biggie Eric.happy.gif

The question here is being asked and maybe else where.

Who will win the first Gold Medal for Canada on home soil, as they have never won a gold on Canadian soil.

I noticed that some of the teams wore black armbands.

*Watching the Olympic Opening* I went to Jr High with Nelly Furtado. She was an extremely unpleasant person. just saying smile.gif

Hmmm..and she seems like a nice person. I personally love Bryan Adams...wub.wub.gif

I live in Victoria, on Vancouver Island. Contrary to what most non Canadians think, it doesn't snow here. Period--it's a temperate rain forest climate. We get usually 2 days of snow a year but the past year haven't gotten any at all. Of course we have Whistler Mountain--I guess that's why Van got the games, because otherwise it seemed odd to pick the WARMEST least wintery place in Canada for the games...

Toups where in Canada do you live? I always thought you were American

And yes very very said about the dead athlete.

I think that will be like Australia getting the Winter Games.

Sure we have Mount Buller, Falls Creek and this new ice skating rink, but I don't think that will ever be enough.

Hehe I live in the State of Victoria here in Australia and I can remember when you guys had the Commonwealth Games.

+1 to the First Nations dancers being featured at the games. As a full-blooded American Indian/Native American myself I'm happy to see my distant cousins' cultures being represented. Although they're more influential in Canada with Canada's smaller population, in the US we only make up 1% of the total pop.

Yep I was 13 back then! I'm visiting Australia in the Fall (your Spring!)

Nelly is fake :P well to be fair we all change since our jr high days, but you will NEVER find anyone who has anything nice to say about her back then. I remember she sang Mariah Carey Hero at an assembly and her voice cracked and she ran off crying. Which was great :D (she really was a Mean girl--part of the rougher girls who would beat up other girls, etc)

Hmmm...you going to Aussieland for fun Eric??

Nelly has never had a strong voice. I can see her not pulling off Hero by MC.

Those Native dancers need to be given a Gold Medal for dancing for over a hour.

Guess they have alot more stroke in Canada than here to be given such a major role?

That is cool.

What parts of Australia will you be going to?

Last week in Sept we have our football grandfinal and there are a lot of things happening in the city.

And then from mid Oct to the 1st week in Nov we have the Spring Carnaval (horse racing) here in Victoria

Wasn't the part that they did with the whales great.

You win points for effort ;)

It's strictly an Inuit (aka :"eskimo") thing. Totem poles aren't anywhere up there (of coruse cuz there are no trees)--but there's zero connection, they represent seperate things and the cultures are actually pretty diff, just like how Haidas, where most of thre Totems are from and whoa re around Vancouver don't live in Teepees like Prairie aboriginals do, etc)

 I am like embarrassed right now to be Canadian for not knowing that (or did you not know I was either ;)). I totally did not know it was an Inuit tradition. Thank you for clarifying my mistake, Eric!

Not surprised.
