Honestly, rewatching the mid-80's, I wonder if Pam Long GAF about anyone other than Reva. Even Alexandra, who isn't getting any great story that I can see, she revolves around her precious Brandon.

Reva is supposed to be plucky, "tell it like it is" brave for living with no regrets, while she pisses and moans, biting the Lewis hand that clothes and feeds her so she can lust after a virtual stranger because they've both "hungered" to be a Lewis and feel like they've been excluded from the precious Lewis circle of trust.

Lord love a duck.

Long didn't know how to write for strong women. She's not interested in Annabelle, Nola, Katie (although she hadn't had a story since '81) or Trish, Mo and Claire have babyitis, Roxy's an ex-whore, Mindy's spoiled but occasionally tries to grow up and Beth cries all day everyday.

Yes, Vanessa isn't the mover and shaker she was upon entering Springfield. But at least she was allowed to grow as a character. Unlike Reva, she's not hamstrung in some eternal sexpot role that she can't escape from.

As much as I dislike some aspects of the Dylan storyline, it's arguably Long's best umbrella story. Yes, it could've been written without Vanessa, but it's undoubtably richer for her being in it.

Actually.. I thought she restored Katie back to her more fun loving/self deprecating spirit after being watered down by Marland.  Even the actress that played Katie puts the blame more on Gail Kobe than Long.

I think I understood what she was trying to do with Nola.. but it didn't work.  She was trying to write a character that gets her happily ever after with the man she loves... but struggles with the reality of living in real world after getting her happy ending.  However, the way she went about it was all wrong.

Trish, she wisely made the peacemaker of the Lewis family.. though I could understand the actress probably growing restless with being the pragmatic peacemaker by 1985.

Unpopular opinion:  I actually think Beth should have stayed dead.  I think it made his embracing of the dark side of Spaulding more realistic once she was dead.. and as we saw, it did affect his relationship with Chelsea during that period.

I’m up to May 16, 1996.

Lucy/A-M are getting married and they were holding this big secret for weeks on where the location was… all to find out it’s going to be an ad for Universal Studios haha.  Probably was fun back in the 90s, but a bit cheesy looking back now. Although they were on a boat alone, at night, reminiscing about Brent, and A-M promised a tearful Lucy that “the worst is over, there is nothing to be afraid of anymore”… and right after, freaking JAWS comes out of the water to attack them on the ride. LOL. I’ve actually been on that ride and it was as scary in person as it was watching it, but that scene ended up being very cheesy given how serious it was supposed to be.

Rick being there in Florida with everyone makes zero sense considering he doesn’t hang out with any of these people, but he’s clearly there because Phillip has shown up. Very plot-driven, but at least I’m getting old flashbacks of Rick/Phillip during this. But yeah, outside of the nuptials, this wedding and the Universal Studios trip (ad) turned out to be more about Phillip than anything. Skulking around in the Frankenstein costume, listening to everyone’s conversations about him, was… interesting. Rick dancing in the street by himself, while the other couples danced together, was pretty funny though.

The nuptials were beautiful and I loved seeing A-M/Lucy finally get married. I loved how they mentioned Nadine a few times throughout, but especially during their nuptials. It was a nice touch. I still can’t believe Nick, Susan, Bridget and David weren’t there.

I really love the Amanda/Alex rivalry. The digs they make at each other are so funny to me.

Dinah and Roger have gone off the deep end with their hatred for each other. She’s making him think he’s going crazy by dressing up as Hart’s mother, gaslighting him into thinking untrue things. Now, he’s putting a drug in her drinks that should make her hallucinate and be psychotic. They both want each other dead, and I can’t imagine they’ll ever come back from this.

Blake is now pregnant with twins, and the fear is that Rick is the father, or Rick and Ross are both fathers by split parentage between the twins. I don’t hate this storyline because it’s unique and also possible, which I didn’t realize until I googled it.  The storyline has been on pause for a bit while Rick is in Florida for the wedding, so I’m curious to see where this goes.

Annie/Josh have also been on pause a bit given that Reva/Buzz/Alan are all in Florida. I’m sure when Reva gets back home, Josh will continue to lust after her while Annie grows more uneasy.

Holly delivered Meg, their child with down syndrome, and she and Fletcher have had a rollercoaster of emotions about it, but overall pretty ‘slow’ and boring here. If I liked Fletcher more, I might care more. I found it really weird that Ben randomly decided to move away and go to boarding school because he felt like he’d be in the way, and Fletcher didn’t really seem to have a big problem with it. Seems more like the writers just didn’t want to deal with him and Meg together.

Viviane just confided in Holly that Griffin is Gilly’s father, just as Griffin and Gilly held hands/locked eyes at the diner. Viviane is now trying to seduce Griffin, in hopes that it will make them stay apart. This whole storyline is gross. They’re really going to let a father/daughter get romantic before they know their true relations? And instead of just telling Gilly the truth, Viviane would rather try to cheat on her husband again with Griffin and ‘compete’ with her? This is awful.

I’m also losing interest in Dahlia and Marcus. He just told her the truth about her mother, which upset Frank and got Marcus in deeper trouble. But yeah, I’m not really that invested in their budding relationship, especially since she’s still in high school.

Oh and they just introduced cell phones on the show and it’s hilarious.  Blake pulls out her cell phone and answers with “Hi, I’m on my CELL phone”. “Yeah, I have a CELL phone” - it’s so funny.

They finally updated the opening on May 2, 1996!  Which only covers half the cast, which tells me they will hopefully/finally have two separate openings. It was always weird to me that they could remove someone from the opening quickly, but never add someone new at the same time. The opening was getting so old that half of it was stock images that replaced people that left the show (Nadine, Eleni, Eve, Nick, Mindy, David, Tangie and then some shirtless guy I never could tell who it was). Reva has been on the show for over a year now and she was never in the opening until just now with the update. I can’t believe they let it go that long! Oh same with Annie and Dinah - both were on the show for like 16-17 months before they finally got in the opening.

Nope, we had taste, even in the 90s, and the richest family in town throwing a wedding at an amusement park was never cool.

But, isn't funny that they're all back in Florida, but nobody mentions this is where Reva went nuts and drove off a bridge.  It seems like it might trigger some memories.

Thanks as always @alwaysAMC

The remote was panned in the soap press at the time, especially Philip wandering around in the costume as well as some of the comedy.

I have to admit it didn't bother me, even though I knew how ludicrous the idea was of the Spauldings having a wedding at a theme park. I thought there were some fun moments and I did like the scene where Lucy got to cry and grieve over what Brent had done to her.

I think I was just glad to get away from the stories in Springfield, which were bad and getting worse.

There are a number of attempts at revamping the opening music in 1996. I'll be interested in what you think of them. I remember being glad they updated the photos but also noticing how cheap they looked. The show did need a new opening. Sadly, Rauch would instead just not even have an opening for over 5 years.

LOL - well ironically, on their last night in Florida, Reva and Buzz got into a car wreck while tailing Alan and his business associate. They were trying to prove that Alan was in charge of that Avnet company that was creating issues with the 5th Street rebuild (which of course Alan was, and of course Alan lied to Alan-Michael about it on his wedding day, etc). But yeah, Reva was trapped in the car for a bit, but they were able to get her out before it caught on fire and exploded.  It became sort of a non-event after a couple episodes, but Reva needs to avoid cars in Florida

You’re welcome!

You have such a great memory, which I love. I guess I’m not surprised it was panned by the press, but I do think there were some gems within (the nuptials, Alex/Amanda sharing a room, Nadine shoutouts, etc).

I’m a huge fan of soap opera openings, mildly obsessed because it’s so nostalgic for me. While I didn’t watch GL back then, I still knew their 90s opening generally and always loved it. The dramatic music and lighthouse effects that start it out always gets me excited, very reminiscent of AMC’s or GH’s dramatic opening music overlaying the scene. I was just so frustrated how infrequently they updated it in 1995 and into 1996, so I’m so happy to see the updated versions. I’m now a few more episodes into May and the second/B opening just debuted and I love it!  It closes with Dinah. I loved, loved the version with Harley and her dancing as it closes out. Tangie replaced her, which wasn’t as great, but then when she left, it was just a fireplace closing out the opening for 9 months. Now we have Reva and Dinah, but still nothing beats Harley’s scene in that spot.

My first thought was that Amanda was supposed to come back. Kathleen did come back briefly Christmas 1987, maybe that was supposed to be a permanent return and they changed their minds?

The OTHER possibility: there were a few hints dropped when Alan returned in 1986 that he had some kind of tragic romance while he was away, possibly in San Rios. Maybe they were going to bring in another daughter that way?

Is it possible DORIE was slated to be revealed as his daughter? Yeah, she was too old, but this is a soap. In our perception he was gone 2 years, but maybe it was longer in soap years.

I always wondered why they never took advantage of that two-year gap. Lots of backstory they could have created. They eventually did do that with Roger.

Interesting how that commentator had no problem revealing the backstage chaos at the time. Seemed to even piss her off a little.

I remember this being in the soap press at the time, they were going to be focused on rebuilding the Bauers, Reardons and Spauldings..and we saw they kind of just created a new Reardon (Chelsea when Nola was always supposed to be the youngest) a new Bauer with an offshoot of the main family,(Johnny) so I am sure they were going to do the same with Alan. New writers may have changed all that..(Long later brought  back Amanda for the Christmas episodes...leading into Alex/Phillip dethroning Alan.)

I thought Poser should play an different character then Amanda...maybe an adopted daughter. We know Alan had a woman who he lived with in San Rios, they could have had her die and to pay her back for saving his life he adopts her daughter and trains her in all the ways to be a Spaulding. He pays a debt and he has a secret weapon to unleash on the family when he needed to so he keeps in his back pocket.

I always had the impression that Blake turning out to be Christina was a storyline switcheroo after they decided to bring back Roger. She used to talk to someone on the phone and it sounded like it was a younger sibling. Maybe originally they were going to be Spaulding cousins, like Johnny was a Bauer cousin? I'm pretty sure in the Spaulding backstory Brandon had a brother.

LOL. Nola was established as the youngest, the name Chelsea doesn't fit in with the other Reardon sibling names, AND she had a very prominent Southern accent. Kassie would have been more believable as a Lewis or a Shayne. Plus, the character was boring as heck.

    • Let's travel back in time to Llanview 1976-courtesy of the Daytime Serial Newsletter Since its premiere in 1968, One Life to Live, the story of the Lord and Wolek families in Llanview, has depicted the interrelationships between people from all walks of life. Victor Lord had two daughters: Victoria, now married to Joe Riley, editor of the Lord newspaper, the Banner, and Merideth, who was the wife of Dr. Larry Wolek and the mother of little Danny until her recent death. Victor has recently married Dr. Dorian Cramer, unaware of the mercenary and self-serving motives that prompted Dorian to encourage his proposal. From the moment of their marriage Dorian has made it clear that she is in all ways mistress of the Lord estate, - Llanfair. Victoria is now recovering from an automobile accident in which Joe’s illegitimate infant daughter, Megan, died. Cathy Craig, Megan’s mother, irrationally blames Viki for the accident, apparently believing Viki wanted Megan out of the way. Neither Joe nor Cathy is aware of the fact that Megan suffered from a congenital heart defect and would never have lived to adolescence. Larry’s sister Anna is married to Cathy’s father, Dr. Jim Craig. Their brother Vince Wolek is married to Wanda and has recently lost his job as a policeman in Llanview due to town-budget cutbacks. Vince’s niece, Jenny, a novice nun, has recently arrived in town, and is now planning to leave the order and marry Tim Siegel as soon as she’s completed a final nursing mission in South America. Victor knew he had an illegitimate son and searched in vain for him, but had no idea that Tony Lord, a reporter/war correspondent recently arrived in Llan-— view, was that son. Dorian and her accomplice, Matt McAllister, did know, and conspired to conceal the truth from Victor to prevent Tony from interfering with Dorian’s plans to gain control of Lord Enterprises. Patricia Kendall, a friend of Cathy’s from New York, has accepted a reporting position on the Banner, unaware that Tony Lord is on the scene. Law student Tim Siegel, waiting in Llanview for his intended bride, novitiate Jenny Wolek, to return from a mercy nursing mission in the South American country of La Costa, is horrified to hear a broadcast reporting an attack by La Costan revolutionaries on the hospital where Jenny is working. Jenny, who has not yet taken her final vows, planned to leave her order at. the conclusion of this mission. After hours of emotional torture, Tim learns that Jenny’s name isn’t on the list of reported dead, but the survivors will have to cross a near-impenetrable jungle under fire to escape. But some do get out, and Jenny is among them. Suffering from burns and malaria, she is flown back to  Llanview with Dr. Peter Jenssen, now. a wanted fugitive from La Costa because of his political leanings. As he is still unlicensed in the United States, he accepts a medical-technician post at Llanview Hospital. As Jenny recovers, she admits to Tim she would like to go back and finish what she started, but also wants to go ahead with their marriage plans. Tim notes, however, as reports of brutal destruction come out of the tiny country, that she shares a bond with Peter. Jenny’s uncle Vince Wolek is thunderstruck that she would consider abandoning her religious vocation and makes it clear he’s unalterably opposed. Victor Lord is overjoyed to learn that Tony Harris is the illegitimate son he’s been searching for for years, but his happiness is dimmed by Tony’s scathing  resentment of this extremely rich father who allowed him and his mother to live in near poverty until her death. Tony expresses his resentment to Cathy Craig, who offers him the sympathy he’s shown her since the death of her baby daughter. Cathy bitterly blames Viki Lord Riley for baby Megan’s death, as Viki was driving the child to the hospital when the fatal crash occurred. Cathy doesn’t know that her baby, fathered by Joe Riley before his recent marriage to Viki, was suffering from a hereditary and definitely fatal disease. Viki, now recovering from the accident, tries to smooth things out between her father and Tony, but  realizes they are on a collision course.’ Visiting Cathy at her apartment, Tony is amazed to find that her new roommate is Pat Kendall, with whom he had a love affair more than ten years ago in Rio de Janeiro, when he was in the Merchant Marine and she was a Peace Corps volunteer. They parted after a quarrel, and she later married Paul Kendall, who is now wanted by the FBI as a suspect in the political bombing of a government building: Pat explains that she is separated from her husband and has a nine year old son, who is staying with his grandmother. Policeman Lieutenant Ed Hall tends to minimize the concern of his wife, Carla, about their adopted son Josh’s: recent behavior until he learns that Josh has been spending large amounts of money to impress his white girl friend, Bernice, and her friends (the Hall family is black) and has not been showing up at his part-time job. Actually, Josh has lost his job, due to his unreliability, but he hides this fact and tries to borrow money from Ed, claiming his expenses exceed his income. Wanda, Vinnie’s wife, accidentally spills the beans, worrying the Halls about Josh’s now lying to them as well. Viki can’t bring herself to tell Joe that any child  they have might well have the same fatal condition Megan had. She has told him she’s considering her father’s idea that she and Joe be co-editors of the family newspaper, the Llanview Banner, so that when she becomes pregnant he can carry the full editorial responsibility. Doriab Cramer Lord, recently married to Victor Lord, realizes that her position of power could be impaired by Tony’s arrival on the scene and convinces Victor to squelch Tony’s probable new reporting job on the rival Chronicle by pointing out that it would be embarrassing to have his son on another paper. When Victor does this, Tony bitterly resents his father’s interference, as Dorian knew he would. Dorian then convinces Victor that the Merideth Lord Wolek wing of the hospital is proceeding badly and she should head up the project, named for his late daughter, wife of Dr. Larry Wolek. Dr. Jim Craig reminds Victor that Dorian was bitter at being dismissed from the hospital staff and perhaps shouldn’t work on this project, but Victor assures him she’ll get the job done. Jim suggests to Viki that she accept an appointment to the hospital board, to balance Dorian, but she declines, explaining that she and Joe need time alone.  Viki and Joe have resumed their physical relationship, and Joe expresses his wish that they soon have a family. For this reason, Viki refuses her brother-in law Larry’s offer to tell Joe the truth about his hereditary condition, saying she'll do it herself when the time is right. Jim, learning that Viki and Joe resumed relations before she started taking her birth-control pills, suggests a pregnancy test, and Viki is stunned to find that she’s already pregnant. Viki decides she will tell Joe but press him to share her faith that this child will be unaffected by the disease.
    • Here's a theory worthy of an Edge of Night plot...maybe the elusive Russel Kubeck was in fact a pseudonym for... Henry Slesar!! Somerset had done better in the ratings under Slesar so P&G installed him to compete against his own EON. Slesar had done double duty before writer SOM and EON in the early 70's and would do so in 78 with EON and SFT. P&G had a policy their shows would never compete, but broke that rule when EON was moved up against SOM, so maybe they went one step further and allowed Slesar to write both shows and being a total professional he was able to carry it off. Or maybe not. Anyway 1976 Pt 3 Steve takes the stand. When he nears the part in his story where he’s supposed to forget the hit man, Carrie suddenly starts to cry, and the judge declares a recess. Thinking quickly, Steve tells Castor that his perjury won’t help now the district attorney is out to get Mrs. Wilson, and if they break her they'll have him, Steve, too, and he’s no good to the Organization behind bars. Castor sees the sense in this. So when Steve’s recalled to the stand, he tells the truth about the hit man in the hallway. But Steve’s testimony pales beside the district attorney’s discovery that Mrs. Wilson has a secret bank account which shows a. recent large deposit. She breaks under questioning, and the defense’s case collapses. The three defendants are quickly convicted.  When Castor warns Steve that he’s now in danger,  Lieutenant Price and Julian arrange Steve’s departure for Los Angeles. Steve takes the tickets but doesn’t use them. Instead, he waits for Castor and convinces him to let him talk to “the man” himself and plead his own case. Castor calls Harrington and hands the phone to Steve, who speaks his piece without Harrington’s saying a word. When Castor takes the phone back, Harrington instructs Castor not to kill Steve.  But Steve, while talking, heard what sounded like a music box in the background. It was actually a unique chiming clock, an antique that Harrington takes inordinate pride in. Harrington later tells Castor that their big problem is Julian, as he carries too much power  and influence. Harrington explains he held off on Steve’s elimination because Steve might prove helpful in getting Julian. Detective Sergeant Chip Williams informs Julian that a car rented in his name was found  abandoned near the airport. Julian, who rented it for  Steve to aid in his flight to Los Angeles, replies that a careless reporter forgot the car there. Chip is far from convinced. And Julian and Carrie are very worried about Steve. Carrie is writing a series of articles based on Greg’s investigation to back up Julian’s crusading editorials, and finds herself torn between her memories and her loyalty to Greg and her rapidly growing feelings for Steve. When she finally has a few moments alone with him, days later, Carrie, even more upset to learn of Steve’s inroads into the Organization, begs him to  give it up; she can’t stand the constant thought of his being in danger any longer. Steve gently replies that  nobody’s ever said anything that nice to him before. Steve then manages to get his music-box information to Lieutenant Price, but is unresponsive to the officer’s  new idea for getting Steve out of his present situation. Vickie, taking a long, hard look at herself and her  life, decides it’s time that she changed her self-oriented outlook on things and tried to do something with her life. Seeing that she’s determined to do this, Julian  turns back to her, discouraging Avis, who takes the hint and goes home. When Stan and Terri ask Vickie to head the fund drive for the hospital, Vickie is very  pleased to have the opportunity to do something for someone else for a change. Realizing that Heather needs a diversion from the horrible experience she’s  undergone, Vickie asks her to help with the project. Heather begins with the assignment for posters to publicize the drive. Jerry, who felt the work would keep her from thinking about their baby, is upset when the artist suggests baby pictures for the campaign and proceeds to hand the photographs to Heather. Jerry  interrupts, ending the meeting, but later Heather assures Jerry that she can deal with her own situation and with the pictures, Vickie, meanwhile, has the responsibility of soliciting major donations to kick off the campaign. She visits Fred Harrington, who quickly offers his support for the project. When Vickie admires his beautiful antique chiming clock; Fred proudly tells her the history of the ingenious piece. Upon learning that business is slumping, Harrington angrily tells Castor it’s Julian’s fault and mentions that he’s not alone in wanting Julian out of the way. This interests Castor, but Harrington won’t say more on the subject. Harrington explains to Castor that Julian’s put himself in such a front-line position that if he were to have an accident, even a real one, the entire FBI would be on the scene to investigate. Their  only chance is to investigate Julian so minutely that there is nothing about him they don’t know. Then they can plan their strategy. Castor brings Steve a gun, knowing that Steve doesn’t want to get involved in violence, and when he’s sure he’s got Steve’s prints on the firearm, he carefully pockets it, wearing gloves. Castor then proudly  informs Harrington he’s got Steve framed whenever he needs it: clear prints on a clean gun. Castor also_informs Harrington that the ambitious Sergeant Williams is a likely prospect for cultivation.
    • I mean...I saw a clip and that Willow's hair was pretty.
    • Michael B. Tretow, among other things sound engineer for ABBA, and responsible for the distinct ABBA sound, has died aged 80. https://swedenherald.com/article/abba-sound-engineer-michael-b-tretow-dies-at-80
    • This sort of error is not uncommon now because writers don't put much thought into matching language and lingo with time periods.
    • I think in the long run, Shelle is endgame. The current writers are just playing it slow and natural at the moment and I love it, it’s classic soap opera storytelling. I hope Cwikly and Ford are given time to write these two apart as well gradually working their way back to each other. The potential is endless with EJ and Jada thrown in the mix.
    • The show hit #3 today. The episode was eh. I loathe Leo. He needs to go!
    • IIRC Storm was a nickname given to Stephen Logan Jr. as he had a stormy temper. Much like William Foster Jr. was given the nickname Snapper for snapping at everyone. I remember an interview with either Bill Bell or Bradley where it was mentioned Bill Bell got the name Ridge from a college classmate of Bradley's. Bradley even said that his classmate tells everyone "I'm the real Ridge". I don't where Bill Bell got Thorne from.
    • I'm left wondering if Lynda Hirsch how much access from her office in the Midwest?  I assume people called her to leak information all the time.  And she had press releases, interviews, and screener tapes.  But her insight into the character of John Conboy made me question if she was an insider or just a yenta?
    • The interview also makes me appreciate more how clever it was for Bill Bell to use names like Storm or Thorne. That was a quick talking point for Hirsch with the show. And while I always made fun of it, looking back that's also something that made people I knew who rarely watched soaps always remember B&B.
