Guiding Light Discussion Thread

Messy, messy situation. I know soaps are fast-paced, but if you've hired a replacement, why try and still entice the current portrayer to stay? I get they may have wanted Sherry Stringfield to finish out the storyline, but I don't think hiring someone else while asking someone to stay is the right route, LOL.

It is clear Krista Tesreau is synonymous to the role, but, based on everything I have seen, Kimberley Simms did the best in the role in terms of what could have been with Mindy. I could not have seen Tesreau work in the storylines Simms sold.

Losing those three, especially Beverlee McKinsey, is a major loss for a soap opera like Guiding Light. And that should have been a glaring red light for P&G and CBS. Clearly, it was not.

McKinsey knew what was up and I love how she outsmarted her executive producer with the "out" in her contract. That'll go down as the ultimate WIN in daytime, and you know every single executive producer made sure to be aware of what could go into those deals.

She assumed wrong. Barbara Crampton is a good actress but, following Simms, she just was not Mindy in any sense of the word.

Speaking of which, today is the 28th anniversary of both the announcement that Jill would begin working on Another World and that Loving would be rebooted (the SoHo move, new title, Morgan Fairchild -- but not her role, apparently -- and serial killer storyline were all announced in one fell swoop).

And that wasn't even her first Mindy recast.

I still feel bad for longterm AW fans over her tenure.

He passed away at the start of 1997 from cancer. I wonder if that was one of the reasons he stopped appearing as much. I can't remember his last GL appearance. I know he had a recurring role on AW in his last months.

I always thought his closing credit photo as Hamp was just beautiful.

Episodes I'm always on the lookout for are 1979 and 1980 episodes of Roger/Holly storylines as those episodes set in motion so much of what we saw a decade later (I've accepted we'll probably never see any 1976-1978 episodes of Roger/Holly storylines), and Robert Calhoun years (June 1989 to July 1991) as that was the last golden era. Early JFP (July 1991 to August 1992) is still good, but it was coasting off the groundwork laid during the Calhoun years.

I know the early Gail Kobe/Pamela Long years (Spring 1983 to Summer 1984) were popular and that era pretty much set in motion GL's final 25 years, but from what I've seen, it was too much chasing 1980s trends.

I am always looking for episodes from the Dobson, Marland and Calhoun eras. The Long Kobe years ruined it for me and what came after them was much worse. 80s Reva was so tasteless as the show's heroine, though she might have been ok as a Nola Dancy/Delia Ryan type.

JFP's arrogance took so much away from the show and once again, what came after her was much worse. The sad thing is that even by the end, prior to the new "model", GL was such an easy show to fix.

100% agree, I would happily pay to see 1975-1983 and 1989-1991, I have some interest through 1993 but the more I read about how JFP stirred the pot, I just can’t.

Between this thread and the ratings thread, it’s absolute insanity how they set the soaps to fail so very intentionally.

Thanks @Soapsuds Poor Judi has been through so much but is always able to find some inner light.

Some form of this episode was probably up before on the mega GL episode channel that has been gone for several years, but it isn't up right now. (the episode before it is)

Fletcher reminding me how few men can make slicked back hair work.

Ed judging Maureen after his ho-ing is really something.

I've watched all of 1998 and most of 1999 so far. Michelle and Blake are easily the two least likeable characters, at least for non-villains. Michelle was not nice to Jesse at all and it's hard to feel bad for her with Danny because she knew what she was getting into. Blake just always makes trouble. She ruined poor Ross and unlike Dinah and Annie, she just does bad stuff just to do it.

    • Interesting take on Dallas. Frankly I think the plot of JR Returns should have been the way Dallas ended but for whatever reason they thought they had the chance to get renewed for another season lol. A week later Knots’ 2 hour season finale ranked at #10 against Cheers #3 and LA Law at #5. There’s only a handful of other shows running that long and still doing well enough the ratings/rankings i.e. Gunsmoke, Law & Order, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and more recently Blue Bloods.    Another point of interest is the unraveling of the 80’s sitcoms had already begun in the spring of ‘91. The first part of a Who’s The Boss? two part season finale we see here ranked at  #40 and second part ranked at #43 the following week. Growing Pains finale the previous week barely made it into the Top 30. The Wonder Years fared no better. Cosby losing ground, Night Court and Dear John just being there etc.
    • I'm glad a lot of people are continuing to enjoy this show.

I haven't posted in a few weeks and have some catching up to do. But I did manage to look at the last two episodes after hearing about how good they were. I really enjoyed them. My thoughts on them: The affair/secret child reveal was very good. TMG was really good as Leslie, her whole confrontation with Ted/revealing all to the Duprees was very entertaining. I continue to love AM/Eva. She my top two favorites on the show (along with Nicole). I have a lot of sympathy for Eva and how she was conflicted/ultimately felt guilty about publicly revealing the truth to everyone. I wonder what will happen to her next, especially if she does go and live with the Doctor that is friends with Ted and Nicole. I lol'ed at how Martin/Smitty jumped up and grabbed Leslie when Eva was calling her crazy. The way they did that was funny to me. I haven't liked many of Martin's actions/his attitude especially regarding Smitty/his children, but I think it was interesting how he wanted to check Ted for his actions. And also wanted Bill to be questioned/confronted about his as well. I haven't been the biggest fan of the character of Andre, but I appreciated his calm and measured approach after the reveal and how he talked with Eva. I thought it was interesting that he knew about the affair and convinced Ted not to tell Nicole. Speaking of Nicole, I continue to love her character and view her as the heart of this show/Dupree family. I am interested in seeing where her journey goes as a character after this reveal. I'm looking forward to her leaning on Dani and (also Anita/Vernon, etc...) for a change.

    • Lol.  I love that this board still allows misinformation from a bad source.
    • Thanks @kalbir what a time to have enjoyed the peak of the primetime soaps. Haha you’re good. The only complaint I have with Lorraine’s death as I mentioned recently in the FC thread was it was overkill, and all we got Apollonia. If a pregnant woman had to be killed off, I would’ve chosen just killing off Robin instead in some freak accident or in the explosion at Richard’s to save us from us that disaster lol.    Did Hotel have a cliffhanger that year? I imagine if Hotel had been soapier we would’ve had cliffhangers like the hotel catching on fire or bombed by an ex-lover of Christine. Peter pisses everyone off and is shot in his office. Or a major Golden age star like a Olivia de Havilland shows and tells how she originally owned the Hotel and how Victoria Cabot & Laura Trent stole it from her but now she owns it etc.
    • The whole AMC 2.0 pulled it together in mere weeks to get a show up and running, with scripts and a cast.

Ginger Smith seemed really passionate about being in the executive producer position, and I think she really did a fantastic job in six weeks. It was just well done.
    • I totally didn’t pick up on that. Just perfect! I don’t get the Maurice Johnson hate around here at all. He didn’t take me out of the scenes at all. I understood everything he was portraying. It was great. I do wonder if there will be a personality shift with the new actor, whom I’m still not excited about. Exactly. Right? I’m in the exact same boat as you. Agree with most of this except I never found anything off with Ted, didn’t suspect a thing. I just watched yesterday’s episode and it was one of the best soap episodes I’ve seen in a very long time. I was enthralled the entire time. Just fantastic.
    • Yep! Very curious to see where this goes.
