ATWT: August Thread Discussion

The ONLY moment in the Holden story that made me tear up is Meg telling Emma there's been an accident. Kathleen Widdows is so underrated....she's a freakin' master. All the blubbering of Noelle Beck and the unintentional hilarity of Van Hansis trying to "powerfully hold back as Luke tells Damian" mean SQUAT. KW is old school, rip out your guts with the understated truth of the scene. I know quite a few actors who should just watch her and learn.

And the other kudo has to go to Don Hastings today. The doubt that crept in when Ali told him something he didn't remember was palpable.

Enough with hiring ABC "stars" or some cute himbo/bimbette to boost story. USE OUR VETS. They deliver.

The same here. Kathleen Widdoes was the star of today's show. I've always loved her. And I agree she is pure oldschool ATWT. I actually agree with you about Van, sorry Chitown, but I thought Van was awful today. His acting hasn't been good in a long time. His scenes with Kathleen were cringe worthy at best. His holding back tears was just as bad. I thought Noelle did ok. I wish Martha had been in the role. You know Martha would have gone all out for it.

Don Hastings....it was that "look" that he gave Ali. I know what scene you are talking about PJ.

Yes, the vets deliver....Use them!!

I know they have no budget but I hope they can bring at least 1 or 2 Snyder siblings back for the funeral. If they can't they need to at least have a scene where Emma says, "Caleb and Seth already came back the last time Holden 'died'. They said call them in a year if he hasn't turned up."

This is such an interesting commercial from 1986. Can you imagine any soap today having a promo bragging about a strong female character?

With Lisa Brown just returning to GL, they should've at least gotten her. But yes, the lack of Snyder siblings (there are so many!) bothers me. Not just for Holden's death, but I hate that none of them ever return or are mentioned. Why can't it be like Y&R where Traci or Todd come back here and there? I'd love to see some of them sometime instead of all these short term characters.

I'm hoping now that Lisa is back on P&G soaps they can bring her onto ATWT briefly before ATWT is gone. Iva is such a special character and Lisa is a soap actress like few others.

I hope they at least say why the Snyder sibs won't be there.

I've been having problems with my internet connections so I just finally watched mondays episode! It was fabulous. Right now ATWT is my favorite soap again. I'm glad that it's watchable towards the end of it's run. I want to see the show out, but it was just so bad the past year or two.

One thing I will say is that Jake and Van are the weakest part of the show right now. Their story is the weakest and I don't think any of their stories have ever worked. Luke's coming out was good, but his acting has gone downhill since then. Jake was never a good actor and hasn't improved. They may be a supercouple, but I need them to learn how to act and get a super story. The current one isn't bad on paper and you have Forbes March, but they're dragging it down.

Noelle Beck and Marie Wilson are runner ups in the bad acting department. They aren't terrible, but are very one note. Beck's acting style is very dated and she's just too glam and superficial for me to care about her. Pairing her with Damian has been the first thing to really click as Lily for her.

I was just yesterday watching the end credits for Christmas 1988, when various characters read the Night Before Christmas. We got to see baby Bryant and baby Adam. I guess that clip was brutal for babies.

Speaking of Adam, I'm glad they are, much too long after the fact, trying to redeem him for the horrible character assassination wrought on him by Pissant. But they don't seem to be seriously addressing what he did, which means this hangs over the air as if they think just bringing it up is enough. We get scenes like this.

Casey: You terrorized Maddie and Gwen! You're an attempted rapist!

Adam: Yes, but that's not what we're talking about. What's important is you being a big meanie to Allison.

I just don't think this works. I would even settle for a "they cut the bad out" storyline. It worked on GL with Edmund, at least until the idiots there (currently on their way to ATWT) ruined him again in 2004-2005.

I wish Susan were involved, but I do like the idea of Allison trying to help Bob and getting caught in so much fallout. I just would like to see slower pacing. They rushed through so much on Friday's show, and they seemed to think Scott Holmes yelling every line was enough to make up for it.

I could also do without:

Adam: You're going to keep quiet about Bob nearly killing his wife? You're such an amazing, special person!

Even if she was, that's such horrible clunky exposition. I don't think it's all that noble to continue to allow Bob to be involved in a case that could end with him killing Kim. The harder choice would be to speak up.

Like I said, I do like the idea of the story, and even though Marnie I can't spell her last name is a somewhat boring actress, she held her own with Don Hastings and she has very expressive eyes. Most of the scenes involving Bob and Kim were very good. The Meg/Emma scenes after Holden's "death" were also quite good.

One of the reasons I stopped watching ATWT on a regular basis during the Sheffer/Passante years was if I kept watching regularly, something would repulse me and I was too emotionally connected to the show to keep taking in all the trash they left strewn across the once beautiful Oakdale countryside. I have started back again, because I want to keep up with ATWT until its gone. I do think the show has improved somewhat, the good stories are good and the bad stories are just boring. I hope they further improve and manage to avoid cancellation, if that's possible. With Kriezman on the way, they'll need a lot of luck.

Lily's "grief" seems so fake to me. And note to directors...if a five year old actor can barely string a sentence together, just have him "told" of his father's death off-screen. It'll be a lot more powerful if we hear that little Ethan doesn't understand than seeing how lame it looks. And wow---I hate sounding like a bitch about a five yr. old. But I'm not blaming him---that's on the director.

Three cheers to Rosanna for pointing out the obvious to Parker---Libby can't have it both ways. It felt so good having "normal" Parker back.

*snort* Libby's doin' it in broad daylight at the "back to school/end of summer picnic"?? Yeah...nothing a Ciccone likes more than a reputation. "Juicy" Janet would approve.

Hiss---Craig's indignant at the thought of him snaring a 20-something?? GMAFB...wasn't he just doing Dani---his ex-stepdaughter for five seconds 20-plus years ago---when he came back to town in Dec? And what about his one-nighter with Jen a couple of years ago? Another former stepdaughter who'd actually dated his son?? If TIIC want to insist he's "in love with Carly"---fine. But don't strain yourselves bending over backwards forgetting the very recent history you've just established. FCOL, both Carly and Ro are significantly younger than Craig---or where before several "tweaks" of history and recasts.

The only real positive of the Holden story---Kathleen Widdoes shined again today.

No mention of Van or Jake ...PJ??? I'm shocked!!...LOL Today's show wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I am also glad to have stable Parker back. It looks like Damian is going to be up to his old self soon..lol. I guess nice Damian will be gone soon...if not already...LOL.

    • I think they’re desperately trying to cover his awful tattoos. But anyway them being unable to style short kings properly has been a major pet peeve of mine for a while now.  I honestly don’t understand what some people expect from actors to even begin considering them for recognition. Let’s be real—awards mostly mean that an actor is respected by their peers and has some level of cultural relevance. Actual judgment on the acting itself? That’s often secondary—highly subjective and shaped by the times. I completely agree on both points. If you’re an actor or a dancer you shouldn’t get any tattoos (sorry not sorry). Tomas’ tattoos are ugly too. And regarding the couples- you’re completely right. These writers are unable to write romance.   Further comments: - Kat cannot be this dumb to keep tampering with evidence over and over again. And I’m officially not a fan of the actress—every time she’s in a scene with Leslie, she doesn’t seem intimidated at all. She plays it like comic relief, which is just too much, especially when paired with Leslie’s histrionics and over-the-top antics. Leslie is older, dangerous, and has literally been portrayed as homicidal—Kat should be at least a little scared. • I also didn’t like Kat playing damsel in distress with the hotel manager. It gave off the same weird energy as Dani with the cop. I would’ve much preferred the version Paul Raven suggested, with her sneaking in through housekeeping. • And yes, Dani again accused Hayley of faking the pregnancy—this time even specifying she might be using a pillow under her shirt. (No fake miscarriage being mentioned) I stand by my take: this is ridiculous writing. No one in the real world—except us, the chronically online soap watchers—would even think of such a conspiracy theory. Haley is no Beyoncé. • What in the world was Chelsea wearing in her hair the other day? And this whole thing with Madison is beyond cringe. Chelsea’s coming off as needy and toxic—basically like every other Dupree. • I’m glad the casino storyline is moving forward, but it’s still boring as hell. Honestly, I’d be so here for a plot twist where Vanessa and Doug take Joey out. • The direction and editing lately have been rough. Abrupt cuts, weird pacing… something just feels off overall. There’s a strange uneasiness to how it’s all coming together. • And finally: Tomas is too much of a saint. Where are the messy sluts when you need them? (Vanessa doesn’t count.)
    • Andrew sure has hard nips.
    • I was watching some August 1987 episodes and they brought back so many memories. I had some thoughts: Lisa and Jamie were so dull. Lisa was such a nothing character. It boggles my mind that so much story was centered around her in such a short amount of time. Joanna Going is a talented actress, but the material was just not there.  It was so good to see Wallingford and Mitch again. I know there was talk about Felicia a while back, but these episodes reminded me how integral Felicia was for the show.  Sally Spencer was done so dirty. She is turning in superb performances in an icky storyline. I wish she had stuck around longer. She has chemistry with everyone. The McKinnons should have lasted longer. Spencer had some strong stuff with Stephen Schnetzer and Mary Alexander. AW waster such a talented actress by getting rid of her. Justice for Cheryl too. I also missed Ed Fry when he left. Sandra Ferguson was a star from the moment she came on. She was charismatic and just popped. She had immediate chemistry with RKK and blended in well with Wyndham and Watson. I'd forgotten about the teenage Matthew.  I have no memory of Peggy Lazarus. She must not have lasted long. Was the original plan for John that he was going to turn out to be the twins' real father?
    • If the new and improved copies that @rsclassicfanforever has uploaded can be manually moved into the "by month, by year" folders, that would be awesome. I personally don't think it's necessary to keep the older versions (which either have Dutch subtitles hard coded on them, or are lesser in picture quality). That's a lot of valuable drive space that could be cleared. Just my view but can appreciate others may feel differently. The structure had been by month by year previously, so I think it would be easier to conform to that, where so much prior work to get it to that format has already been done. Hopefully you can "drag and drop" so the new copies are in the right month/year? Re Clips, I never look at them now we pretty much have the episodes in full. Appreciate others may use, however. Thanks for all your hard work here @BoldRestless!
    • Oh yes defintely, Josh Griffith repeats and repeats the same storylines.
    • Isnt’t this storyline similar to the Cameron Kirsten situation though? Sharon thought she killed him. He ended up being alive and Sharon was being tormented with thinking she was seeing his face everywhere and that’s how we got that iconic scene with her and Nikki in the sewers.   I understand in Mariah’s case this is different circumstances but it does seem like a play on that whole thing. Maybe I’m wrong. I just wish if they were going to make any character follow in Sharon’s foot steps it would be Faith. Mariah wasn’t even raised by her, and her personality is different. I would expect her to take a different path. I understand I could be completely jumping ahead because the storyline hasn’t even played out yet but we’ll see.
    • Thanks again @Paul Raven Monica was completely without redeeming qualities at this point. I always found the whole Monica = Carly narrative regressive, as I don't think shows comparing characters so heavily is ever a great idea, but she's actually worse than Carly was. Was it the Pollocks who had Leslie have a miscarriage?  Giving her a child, especially by rape, was not a good idea, but a part of me wishes they'd committed to it just to see what story it might have had in later years.
    • @janea4old Your detailed explanation and delving into the psychology and motivations is no doubt the opposite of what we will see onscreeen. As @ranger1rg stated we will get a few scenes and some sketchy explanations. Like the adoption of Aria, most of it will take place off screen.
    • I'm suddenly fearful that DAYS is going to pull a Flowers-for-Algernon stunt and Bo's progress will be reversed.  While @te. is stuck on Abe's tiny bedroom, I can't stop thinking of the size of Bo's huge hospital room.
    • Okay, why are Paulina and Abe sleeping like that?!  I'd take a screen grab if I wasn't lazy, but come on.
