Y&R Episode Discussion for the week of July 20

I don't know a lot of gays who want to stop any portrayal of Christianity from being shown on TV. I do know some Christian groups who get upset and protest any time any portrayal of homosexuality is shown on TV. That's not true for most Christian groups (and many groups who protest gay media portrayals have nothing to do with Christianity), but it's true for some very effective organizations who have managed to make changes in shows because they know how to boycott. This worked very effectively with the whole kissing ban at ATWT until it became such a publicity fiasco that they finally reversed course.

There's still a great deal of inequality in how the media presents homosexuality. I stopped watching most of the news channels a few years back because I got sick of seeing someone allowed to say the most hideous comments linking gays to pedophelia, incest, bestiality, comments no one would be allowed to make on a major platform about any other minority.

So that's why when I see something like the current stories on Y&R, which I think are very poorly told and essentially reinforce negative stereotypes, I feel let down, even though I never had my hopes up in the first place. Soaps are a place where people can see characters they know and love go through events that will cause the viewer to question what they think and what they have been told. Instead, seeing Adam/Rafe, or bitter, petty Phillip, this will probably just cause them to think everything they have felt about gays is true.

I don't think we're supposed to be emotionally invested in anything on this show. All the characters seem so unsympathetic and stupid and their storylines are lacking major substance or are rushed like hell. I find it very hard to care about the characters on this show and their storylines right now. I certainly didn't expect them to tell a "modern gay storyline" the right way, not that I expect that from anyone in daytime.

I heard that Chance & Chloe was good tomorrow.

Chance told Chloe he's a virgin. He kissed girls but never went any farther then that. I wonder did his finger roam. Also it might have finally hit Chance what his father had done. He's acting cold.

Too bad both of these characters have been shoved down our throats and have been for months now. While I take nothing away from their acting, it's very hard for me to like either character. Perhaps I would have cared if they were rested for a while and then this storyline came about.

I find it very suspicious just as they were talking about having kids, Lily gets ovarian cancer.

Yeah, like the Billy stuff, Delia/Chole crap, and Phillip III revelation weren't very recent obstacles in this "great love story." <_<

No other couple on this show gets the treatment this paring gets, and I do not get it.

They obviously weren't swayed by the 3.4 their boring as hell wedding got in the ratings. Nothing this couple has done has shown me they are as popular as the LAME fans make them out to be.

It's time to stop this pandering to fanbases, it's wrecking the show. The flip-flopping quad is of course another fiasco in that vein.

I'm convinced that someone on that writing team or at CBS has a hard-on for this couple and these characters. Which is why they're never rested and their "great love story" is always front and center for the world to see (or be annoyed at).

I'm not doubting they have their fans, but even their fans can surely see that this couple has had too many "obstacles" thrown their way in only under a year, and some resting would help them.

Um, I don't think he does.

You get him! Yes, he's a gorgeous man under a thick coat of physical and metaphorical slime. How much fun to work and bring out his decency. Honestly, I think this is all about Deacon's son, and his wanting to have a family. On B&B, Stephanie could always shoot Deacon down by commenting on his lack of family. I think this is not Indecent Proposal. I think this is something more relatable. He wants his son to have a family.

Well...the haircut works for the just-back-from-the-front P4. And I saw a Huntington's PSA Driscoll did, and it has already grown out quite a bit. The guy grows hair quickly, so all will be well soon.

Today's episode was gush-inducing! I loved every minute of it. but the highlight had to be Victor confronting Adam about being gay. So many of us have commented how they were curious to see how Victor would react to a gay son - and he did it EXACTLY like I envisioned he would. He accepted him, whether liked it, understood it or not.

Lane - Wow! i'm shocked by how much I love this s/l. I still don't think CK is a great, or even good actress - but she sells the perplexed, sorrowful heroine quite well. When i think back - all of the s/l's that CK has ever been good in is when she's been victimized, which is sad. But I have been on the record from day one that Cane is a keeper. An amazing hero, and DG, stripped of all his gloss is a prince! The only downbeat to this story for me is that my dreams of Patty and Cane look dashed - for now. But I can handle it cause....

Patty is SO going to recover and not go to jail! I can see the writing on the wall. Victor is going to go down BIG TIME for bringing a deranged woman to town to destroy Jack. Patty will be the poor crazy woman Victor took advantage of. The Williams' will take care of her. Jack and Paul will probably team up to shield Patty perhaps and ensure Victor goes down. Victor is left alone with only Adam for company. Looks like Victor might wanna go to Mexico again real soon.

Heather - could they make her any more unlikeable? Next we'll find out she's giving everyone parking tickets. I just HATE how deformed the character is. Why is the hottest girl in town in a hopeless, thankless, romance-free relationship? Just giving him the sex and getting nothing in return? And they even threw in a line from her saying she won't go swimming this summer!

    • Indeed. I may try to watch it in full sometime, but not anytime soon... Mark played Sean Baxter for a few episodes when Courtney married Andy. Burke was either on Broadway or at OLTL at that time, I suppose.
    • Well, Josh was a horndog. LOL Yep. It was one of the first really weird things Reva did with her PPD. She became obsessed with the idea that Dylan and Sam should get married. Sam was only 17, and needed her parent's permission. Reva helped them leave town so they could go to a neighboring state where Sam was old enough. Ross, Billy and Josh stopped them, then Sam went to India to try and persaude Justin. Reva followed her and didn't tell Josh she was going. While Reva was gone, Josh advertised for nannies, and Harley applied. He ended up hiring someone else. But when Reva returned, she hired Harley because (in her weird mental state) she wanted someone she could trust with the kids (because she feared Josh was trying to get rid of her and that Vanessa wanted the children.). After Reva starts treatment, she asks Harley to stay until she's stronger because she's good with the kids. At the party, Reva starts going off the rails, insulting Justin and Josh hauls her to a private dining room to ask WTF. Reva starts confronting him about the "affair" with Vanessa, and he realizes she is weird. He locks her in the dining room and frees Mindy and Van from the ladies room (where Reva has locked them in). Van starts telling him that Reva attacked her and needs help.  Reva escapes out the window of the dining room and goes back to the party, climbs onto a table and starts a striptease. Josh gets her to stop, takes her home and after filling Ed in, decides to go to the doctor the next day. Reva then takes off and spends days running around town, coming on to a guy she thinks is Billy, Billy, Hamp, Frank and Roger.  Roger takes her to his apartment and takes nude pictures of her, which he tries to blackmail Billy with. He wants the deed to the land the Towers is on in exchange for them. (Billy had been left the deed by a sweet old lady who lost her home in the 5th street fire. Roger had stolen the deed from her before she died. After Roger took those pics of Reva, she saw him hide them, and took an envelope from the hiding place. She didn't realize she'd taken the deed and not the pictures.)  Anyway, Billy and Vanessa trick Roger into burning the pictures, claim the deed and at the Towers opening reveal that Billy owns the land and therefore the Towers. That's what led to Roger and Alex's breakup and Roger and Mindy's affair. Mark Lewis was on ATWT? 1986 is not a good year, storywise. No bueno. Muy no bueno.
    • All the time they spent trying to make viewers feel sorry for Chad only for him to not even last that long. I wonder if they knew Richard Burgi was going so quickly. You're right about Josie replacing Cheryl. On paper, this should have made sense, given all the ties Josie had to the canvas, but I did prefer Cheryl. There was something very synthetic about Alexandra Wilson.  I suppose even if she did have some fans they were just so used to getting rid of people left and right, so she was more collateral damage. As you said above I do wonder what the plans were for Peggy Lazarus. I think AWHP mentioned her once telling Peter that Peggy Lazarus wasn't her real name. Maybe she would have been another Carl moll... Rebecca Hollen never did get her due in her soap roles.
    • So true...Hackney might have had a story on FC with Richard being an old lover of his, but reveals herself to be a Cartel member and blackmails Richard with something into doing her dirty work  LOL. But of course Richard had his hands full with the double trouble sisters Ms. Jones and Ms. Braxton that season.

    • Cat herself will be a stumbling block all her own as she vowed to Chad to stay away from him, thus redeeming her of her crime morally. Classic DAYS would have them gazing longingly at each other at Doug's Place or Blondie's, while Liz is serenading the room with a song aptly chosen to represent their feelings of emotional turmoil.
    • From what I just recently watched, they were setting her up to go into future stories. She was Emmy nomination worthy in the material I saw. If some viewers did not like her, the character could have been rehabilitated after that sick storyline. It feels like they destroyed a character for fun and then tossed her to the curb. Spencer had chemistry with everyone. I'm just retroactively angry on Spencer's behalf.  You're right about how Cheryl was often forgotten and pushed aside and I would take Cheryl over Josie. I think soaps need characters like Cheryl. Characters like Josie are way too common. Josie always got on my nerves.
    • CBS was back in third place in 1994/95. That was the season CBS lost NFL broadcasting rights which also cost them several established affiliates in major media markets. 1995 CBS was sold to Westinghouse and Les Moonves arrived. 1995/96 CBS was trying to be young and cool to compete with NBC and Fox, but it was an epic failure and CBS was once again in third place.
    • I tend to think that Chad will actually listen to Jen (this time). And that will be the next stumbling block in their relationship, which will open the possibilities for Cat to seek another member of their love triangle... To iterate my earlier thought, I am also not a fan of the person Melissa Reeves, but the character of Jennifer looks so chic this week, especially in comparison to Hope (and Gabi).  That blunt haircut is a winner.
    • I think Cheryl was essentially replaced by Josie, and it seems likely that Lemay wanted to bring the Frames back into the picture and for a variety of reasons that it would be McKinnons who would make way for them. Cheryl didn't really get many layers -- she was pretty and kind and sweet and faded into the background so that Scott could participate in the AIDS storyline with Dawn. Looking at the AWHP, other than (not very) shockingly being in love with her mother's adopted son Scott, Cheryl apparently went out with Sam and flirted with much-too-old-for-her John Hudson and MJ's ex-boyfriend/pimp Chad. I know MJ told Mary that she had been a prostitute, but did she tell Cheryl and did she tell anyone about Chad's pimping?
    • I feel the same way about Melissa Reeves' Jennifer. She just makes the show feel like home by her presence alone. I am perfectly okay with them coming in every once and awhile, which probably fits Reeves' schedule better anyway. Their connections to Salem are still there: JJ, the grandkids, Jack still owning half of The Spectator ... they're perfect recurring characters. All this talk of Jennifer being in the wrong regarding Cat is absurd. Jennifer is not being villainized in any way, shape, or form, she's just being allowed to actually be human, which adds odds to the obstacle of Chad and Cat eventually getting together. All inner conflict. Keep it coming!
