Y&R: In Support of Melody Thomas Scott

Very true, and so far, he's the only one reporting this. Unlike the Jess Walton situation, which SOD couldn't wait to latch on to.

Well, Y&R put out a casting call for Jill which is why they "latched" on to it.

Even if they don't hire fairly cheap younger actors, I'm pretty sure Melody would still be asked to take a pay cut. In this economy, with falling ad revenue for the soaps in daytime, and ratings not substantially growing, Melody (or any longtime vet) can't expect to have their salaries increased or to make the same salary they made at their peak of their careers.

This isn't the first time, if I recall correctly, that Melody's had trouble re-newing her contract. Who knows, it could very well work out soon enough anyway, like the over-hyped Jess Walton situation from a few weeks back.

This is totally off topic, but a Rafe & Phillip banner, really? They haven't even confirmed that Phillip is gonna be gay.

I think it's a spoof of the big couple fans who start making banners before the couple even airs.

Yeah and was yanked for being too big...which I was going to resize..and it contained spoilers..whatever....its just speculation right now.

Say what you want about Latham, but she worked MTS to death and kept her on the front burner. That senate race storyline with Jack was one of the most contrived, plot-driven stories I've ever witnessed on any soap, and that's saying a hell of a lot, but MTS took it and ran with it and made it work. I think she really came into her own in that storyline and was never better. We think of Y&R as being essentially Victor and Nikki's story, but we almost forget that she has contract negotiation problems when Kay Alden and Jack Smith were HWs. She was off-screen for a while, if I remember correctly. I guess TPTB don't see has unexpendible as we do. In addition, I think she is more identified with Nikki than Jess is with Jill, so I don't think a recast Nikki would work as well as a Jill recast.

I think an even better example was Nikki and Victor fighting over whether to save Victoria or the baby. One of the most emotional storylines I've seen in a long time, where you really weren't sure which side was the right side, and you could see the agony of having to make the decision etched into everyone's faces.

You mean, a naive young girl from the proverbial "wrong side of the tracks", who was doomed to a life as a common stripper, before a very rich and powerful man "rescued" her and molded her into someone of elegance and refinement?

If that is what daytime drama is, then no wonder the "mainstream press" gives them no respect.

This guy's first big hit and one of his more recent ones totally remind of the original Victor and Nikki storyline (1981-1988).

Well if she takes a pay cut she won't go anywhere.

If she's going to get the same lack of interest from Y&R she's had over the past year then a pay cut isn't going to be enough to make them properly use her. I imagine that may also be on her mind.

Yes. I thought this was one of the real high points of Y&R over the past few years.

I'd hardly call Melody's presence on Y&R diminished, last year she appeared more than anyone else on the show, with the exception of Eric Braeden and Joshua Morrow.

1. Eric Braeden (Victor Newman) 177

2. Joshua Morrow (Nick Newman) 173

3. Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki Newman) 169

She took a big vacation in February of this year, but she's still appearing a lot more than certain other actors/characters. Her storylines might not be big, but her episode counts tell another story when it comes to her appearances on this show.
