In this economy, with falling ad revenue for the soaps in daytime, and ratings not substantially growing, Melody (or any longtime vet) can't expect to have their salaries increased or to make the same salary they made at their peak of their careers. This isn't the first time, if I recall correctly, that Melody's had trouble re-newing her contract. That senate race storyline with Jack was one of the most contrived, plot-driven stories I've ever witnessed on any soap, and that's saying a hell of a lot, but MTS took it and ran with it and made it work. I think she really came into her own in that storyline and was never better. We think of Y&R as being essentially Victor and Nikki's story, but we almost forget that she has contract negotiation problems when Kay Alden and Jack Smith were HWs. She was off-screen for a while, if I remember correctly. I guess TPTB don't see has unexpendible as we do. In addition, I think she is more identified with Nikki than Jess is with Jill, so I don't think a recast Nikki would work as well as a Jill recast. One of the most emotional storylines I've seen in a long time, where you really weren't sure which side was the right side, and you could see the agony of having to make the decision etched into everyone's faces. Eric Braeden (Victor Newman) 177 2. Joshua Morrow (Nick Newman) 173 3. Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki Newman) 169 She took a big vacation in February of this year, but she's still appearing a lot more than certain other actors/characters.
