Stealing this from the OLTL thread.

Let's look back at 35 yrs of Y&R characters.

Who did u like/dislike?

Who was pointless?

My first picks

Cassandra Rawlins - Nina Arveson was stunning and the whole Paul/Cassandra story initially was intriguing.

Vanessa Prentiss - Dragon lady behind that creepy veil.Eventually tumbled off the balcony screaming Lorie's name.

Keemo - Jack's son,who should have become a major player, but bad casting and boring stories put paid to that.Recast and bring him back!!

Tricia Dennison - batsh*t crazy and I loved her for it.

Joanne Curtis - the lady who may have been Kay's lesbian lover, at the time it was very controversial to the point that Bill Bell swiftly wrote her out.

Ramona - pointless, just one in a long line of exotic beauties who spent a year on Y&R allowing Eric Braeden to prove that he can still get it up after all these years.

I am going to stick to the early 70's and early 80's for this first post. I love modern Y&R but for me my heart still belongs to the Brooks and Foster families.

Lauralee Brooks

Leslie Brooks

Chris Brooks

Peggy Brooks

Snapper Foster

Greg Foster

Brock Reynolds

Liz Foster

William Foster

Stuart Brooks

Jennifer Brooks

Lance Prentiss

Lucas Prentiss

Vanessa Prentiss - one of the best villians the show ever had. We have been sort off discussing her on my board the last few days.

Phillip Chancellor

Sally McGuire

Pierre Roulland (the great Robert Clary)

Jonas (the great Jerry Lacy)

Casey Reed

Brad Eliot

Jed Andrews (Laurie's publisher that she had the affair with; played by Tom Selleck)

Jed's wife (forgot her name but she was played by Lanna Saunders)

Steve Williams (Paul's brother that had the relationship wtih Peggy Brooks)

Julia Newman (the beautiful Meg Bennett; one of the most beautiful ladies to ever grace Y&R and soaps)

Michael Scott (Julia's lover played by Nicholas Benedict)

Eve Howard (the late great Margaret mason)

Mary Williams

Carl Williams

Jazz Jackson

Tyrone Jackson (had one of the best black storylines ever written in soaps)

Andy Richards (I think that was his name; he was Paul's best friend; played by Steven Ford)

Kevin Bancroft

April Stevens

Derek Thurston

Suzanne Thurston (another great villian; played by the wonderful Eileen Barrett who later turned to writing)

Cash (stripper involved with Nikki)

Barbara Anderson (played by Deidre Hall; was involved in the Brad Eliot story)

Gwen Sherman (hooker in the early days of the show; one of the best early characters; played by Jennifer Leak)

There were so many wonderful memories during the first 10 years of Y&R. Such great characters and great stories. I will some later ones from the show I miss in another post later, but had to mention all these early ones first.

Nina Webster - I don't miss her as much as some others do, but she was good.

Veronica Landers - My second favorite psycho after B&B's Pam. R.I.P. Candice Daly.

Malcolm Winters - Found him boring with Olivia and Callie; loved him during his 2004-2005 return.

Drucilla Winters - I used to like her, but her behavior toward the end of the LML era, combined with that lunatic Victoria Rowell's last interview, makes me never want to see her again.

Raul Guittierez - Bring him back!

Cole Howard - Snoozefest.

Danny Romalotti - We're supposed to believe this man is straight? Wow.

Diane Jenkins - Hated Alex Donnelley's version; loved Susan Walters' version.

Bobby Marsino - Great character with loads of potential. Hated the way they wrote him out.

Cameron Kirsten - Great psycho. Linden Ashby has charisma. I'd say I wanted him back if not for the fact that it would guarantee Sharon more air time.

Mackenzie Browning - Bashioum was okay; Kruger was awful; Kimsey was fantastic.

Adrian Korbel - For the love of GOD stay gone!

Maggie Sullivan - One of the best things to come out of the LML era. Too bad she left with LML.

Cassie Newman - Loved her in her last few years on the show. She had potential.

Logan Armstrong - Liked the actress, but - shock horror - the character was underdeveloped.

Going through the decades, I liked:

The Foster family, especially Liz: While I understand why Bill Bell felt the need to move them off the canvas, Jill and Katherine remained to keep links to the Foster family viable. Every brief visit from Liz shows that's she sorely missed, and I'd love to see her recur more often. And maybe they can bring back Snapper and Chris's daughter, Jennifer. Maybe have her follow in her dad's footsteps since we have no regular doctor and Olivia floats in and out of DC, and she can also interact with Aunt Jill.

Casey Reed: We haven't really had any visits from Nikki's sis in a while, although she's been mentioned a few times.

Mary Williams and her other kids: Watching Paul today, you'd forget that his family was a core family in the early 80s, so having Meddling Mother Mary, Patty or Steve back would be nice, even if would mean the return of Mary's spare ribs and sauerkraut. They can even bring in Todd, even thought he was off screen for years.

Andy Richards: He and Paul made great partners and great friends. Too bad he just vanished after Paul reclaimed the detective agency from him after the Isabella thing ended.

Matt Miller: I thought there was a lot they never explored with Victor's long lost brother. They brought him back for a brief time when George Kennedy was on as Victor's dad, but I think having him was an interesting contrast to the great and powerful Victor.

Nina: Her recent visit for Katherine's funeral shows how much she's missed.

Nathan: I always liked Nathan, originally known as Kong, better than Jazz as Paul's hired muscle/right hand. Jazz seemed like he was an attempt to emulate Mr. T, but Nathan seemed a bit more nuanced as a character. Too bad that they had to make him cheat on Olivia and then eventually die.

Cassandra: Nina Arveson was hot, and the fact that her late hubby was on a par with Victor in having more money than god could have made for some interesting stories as well, but she, too, was unfortunately killed off.

Mamie and Miguel: They may have started as the ones who kept their respective households running, but both were more than just simple servants and were like part of the family.

Tricia Dennison: Her and her sister may have started as just the daughters of Jill's latest beau, but boy, did Tricia eventually turn into a hell of a character.

Mackenzie Browning: Too bad Smith and Alden decided to have her and Billy be related, since a great couple was broken up as a result.

Larry Warton: A throwaway character from the "Nick in jail" story that eventually touched a lot of lives in GC.

Bobby Marsino: He had great chemistry with Nikki. And even though he was reported dead, that could have been a cover-up to get the mob off his back, right?

Y&R has also had some of the blandest 'leading men'

Joshua Landers

Scott Grainger

Cole Howard

How about Derek Thurston - lust object for Jill,Katherine and Suzanne.Until he went to work at Chancellor, his wardrobe consisted of a white polo shirt and way too tight white jeans. Not a good look.

Lorie Brooks was the star of the show in those days-kind of a combination of Nikki & Ashley.Viewers who only saw her in the 'Victor searches out lost loves' story missed out.

How could we forget Rose deVille?Darlene Conley at her most evil. She was in 2 stories-Snapper & Chris help teen runaways and the Nina stolen baby saga.

Wasn't that the point of the character, though, i.e. the lust object who used his looks and charm to work his way into Chancellor, much like Brad did later with the Abbotts and Jabot?

Yes, the Lorie/Lance/Leslie/Lucas quadrangle was at it's height when I was watching in late elementary school and high school. And Lorie went out with a bang by outsmarting Victor, something you could get away with on the show back then. The way she left him at the altar without returning his wedding gift of Prentiss Industries stock was classic.

She was in 3 stories, actually. About a year after the runaway/white slavery story, Rose came back running a call girl operation/escort service, and one of the girls in her stable turned out to be Nikki, who thought she was getting into the modeling biz. Imagine Nikki's surprise when a john asked her for sex on her first assignment, especially when the john had a heart attack trying to chase down a reluctant Nikki.

    • That would require Dani to think about someone/something other than herself.. and we all know Dani only thinks about Dani.  Including her butting into Nicole's business instead of just being a supportive sister.
    • I also hope there will be a follow up to Dani noticing Vanessa with Joey. We need another scene of them two together. And does Dani have any knowledge of Vanessa's affairs?
    • One of the soap greats. I wish I had a stronger connection to her, but her major soap stints passed me by. However, the way veteran watchers have described watching her back in the day makes me yearn for the glory days of soap. As a DAYS fan first, her time on the show is basically an enigma. As years have passed as a member of this board, previous and current members have talked in fondness about her obviously major story with Dickie and David's death, but even more interestingly, her romance/friendship with Bill, and the fascinating tangled tale of her encounter in the park with Eric Peters. It's such a shame DAYS never swayed her back home where she belonged. Though I am more than thankful RC and JG didn't get their grubby paws on her, especially with the horrible example of how they saw fit to write Marie and Liz's relationship with all the nuance and sophistication of a pigpen.  SSH's remembrance of her was wonderful to read, so thank you to whoever posted. Could be cool too if any of her Clear Horizon material popped up. Does anything of that show exist?
    • All this! Especially the highlighted. If today was any indication to what's to come, I see Mona and Shanice roles being beefed up. I personally think they are going to test her out with Doug.  I initially didn't see it for Kat, since the Eva reveal, and few of her scenes around it. Made me warm to her for some reason.
    • Agreed, pretty much with everything. The dialogue bugs the hell out of me. I don’t think a lot of it even works written out on a page, much less spoken. Even a veteran like TT can’t help but sound stagey with such purple prose. Re: the Duprees. I’m guessing that they’re holding their cards close to their vest on them for the various mysteries that will unfold, but I wish they weren’t so opaque and tonally weird as characters, especially in these make-or-break early days. (One reason why I wish they’d give up on keeping secrets from the audience and just allow them to speak freely, allowing the tension to come from what other characters don’t know.) Dani is giving Carly Corinthos realness, which isn’t a compliment. Oh, don’t get me started on the Black male characters and the tropes they’ve employed thus far. I had hoped a Black-created, NAACP-co-produced soap would be more cognizant of these traps, but nope. At least it seems like they’re playing the long game with Andre and Dani after all this feening over basic Ashley.
    • I feel like the reason they went with these two stories is because these are common stories told on soaps that allowed them to really tie the entire canvas in and help develop their relationships. I do understand the implications of having two cheating stories and these being Black characters but MVJ has always been clear that she wanted to show us the same way characters are featured on any soap. I don't think any story should be off limits just because the majority of the characters are Black. We have several positive representations of Black men so it's not like everybody is a cheater or a bad spouse. I also think the two stories and relationships are different enough that the stories don't feel similar in any way.
    • Well, on that point, I am one fan, and I know I'm not alone in this, who thinks that it is possible to have a time or times on a show where the ratings do not reflect the show's popularity & I think that is because it is possible for the metric to be broken.
    • The Anita scene with Ted was written all wrong. Dani should have come in like she did, all guns blazing, with Anita showing up and ushering Dani out, as she stays alone with Ted. He's ready for more fury, but at first she treats him like her son, not just some man Nicole married, she's confused and heartbroken, needing explanation. Then, she drops the motherload and tells him to get his damn act together like she did. Anita came off completely one-note. And with both Dani and Anita in the scene, the self-righteousness just made both look like harridans who wouldn't shut the hell up. Very disappointed in that scene. The scene with Eva was much better. It could be good if somehow Vernon starts to soften towards her and that puts the first signs of strife into their marriage. We need something interesting to happen with them, for once. Mona was the MVP today for me. I love Leslie and especially Eva, but I was firmly on Mona's side today. She deserved to get her two cents in. The scenes just left me wanting more of her and her inner life. They should really drop Ashley, Derek, and Tomas and put Mona, Laura, and Shanice on contact stat! I don't get why Leslie continued to lie about where she got the money Ted gave her though? What purpose would that serve? Faint hopes that Mona would still forgive her, I guess? Kat really gets some of the best lines. Through all the bitchiness and judgment, she has a talent at keeping me on side because somehow she's never come across unlikable to me, where someone like Dani, even Anita, falls. The scene with her, Martin, and Nicole was a necessity. Things are coming together to making that part of the family feel more like a family. Now I anxiously await Kat and Ted having a one on one confrontation. It would be perfect if it happened to be in the new Ted's first scene/episode.
    • They’ve been really nailing the fall out super well and your whole post really highlights some of the great parts and ramifications we’re seeing.
