Mitt Romney is retiring, and as always offering a whole lot of "both sides" nothingness.

The Atlantic is publishing excerpts from a biography on him including his attempts to form a third party with Manchin, his disdain for JD Vance, et al.

Some good news from New Hampshire. Democrats won a special election (in a Trump district no less) and are likely to win another in November as that one is in a Dem district. If they win that one, they will have a tie in the state house. NH's legislature always goes back and forth, but still, this is a reminder that in swing states, a lot of people aren't listening to the media hype about how Trump is a god and Biden is old and worthless.

I am going to use the Nixon mantra - The Silent Majority. The most underreported story the past so many years is the grassroots efforts on the democratic side which exploded when Trump got elected. They are much more organized now and this is without phony grassroots efforts like The Tea Party and Moms for Liberty taking up all the oxygen in the media. Imagine being a school board voter or meeting attendee and listening or reading about these wackjobs spewing garbage about book banning, diversity, teaching history, and trans kids being the biggest danger when gun violence is the bigger danger to kids, as one example. This is what the silent majority is hearing. Grassroots organizers have done a phenomenal job organizing against this and recruiting candidates. The democratic party in Illinois has recognized this and for the first time gave money and support to local races in Illinois this past spring. It's time the national party does the same thing.

One of my colleagues on the local Sustainability Commission  I am a member of, regularly challenged one of these nuts running for the school board in the local high school district publicly along with many other people. He lost of course and ended up coming to a commission meeting to spew his pathetic victim complex towards her at one of our meetings during the public comment section after he lost. A pathetic weak display. He got backlash when he ran which escalated after that display at our meeting. Numbers opposing make a difference and when enough people stood up he slithered back under the rock he came out from.

People need to stop giving the media so much power. If anything 2022 and how pathetic and wrong they were should tell a whole lot of people something and whos paying attention to the garage they spew. The MSM is worse than Fox because they fake being allies and unbiased. They are anything but and most people pay very little attention.

Normally, I detest the idea of Democrats being primaried but Menendez has been on the edge of full-blown scandal for at least a decade and due to his rank within the Senate, has been a potential political liability for awhile now. I have been waiting for this corruption damn to burst for years but now we’re on the eve of a president election year. What timing.

I'm definitely not looking forward to this possible government shutdown. I'm one that would be considered an excepted employee and would have to work without pay. My agency recently announced we will definitely continue to work throughout a shutdown. Plus, I have a few days leave scheduled right around the time that the shutdown may happen and my leave will be cancelled if the shutdown goes through. I was reading rules about how paid annual (and also sick) leave work during a shutdown and none of it is favorable. We have to cancel leave and will be considered AWOL if we don't show up. Unless our bosses get creative with the schedule or put us in furlough status for unpaid leave.

I think there might be a chance they could get creative with mine and that I could possibly still get the days off for leave that I wanted. Though, I'm not sure if my bosses will agree to do that for me. I hope they will.

I have a couple of co-workers who have more complicated dilemmas with their leave. One has at least all of next week scheduled off for his birthday (I believe he's supposed to go to Vegas). And the other has at least a week to two weeks scheduled off for a surgery. A potential shutdown definitely puts both of them in a bind as they technically wouldn't be allowed to take their leave. I hope things work out and that we can all take our leave.

I also live in an area where there is a large military presence, and it would be bad if they have to go without pay. Hopefully somehow Congress will prevent the government from being shutdown and we won't have to deal with the many problems that a shutdown will cause. Though things are looking very shaky and it seems likely that we will have one. If it happens, I hope we get out of it as soon as possible.

    • Thanks @YRfan23 Wow I didn’t realize the cast has gotten that tiny either which is absolutely pitiful.    Surprised that Budig is still on as Taylor barely watched any lol tbh but nonr of the recent daily recaps ever mention her anymore I figured she was out the door soon.
    • I love the yellow bumpers with the crew lol. That's Donna Lewis as the music at the beginning! I haven't heard her in ages. R.J. and Tea were so hot and so underrated. I remember seeing the bit with the Buchanan men promising to show Max a good time in his bedroom and it's still hysterical.
    • I think a lot would've gotten over it the same way they got over the Trina recast, especially since it became swiftly clear NAC is never coming back. The key issue, we agree, is Frank. As long as Trina is onscreen he's not touching that. As for Nikolas, honestly I'd kill him off. Adam Huss has done a wonderful job in a very difficult situation but I don't think he has leading man power for a soap opera (not because he's gay, but he's very intense and I don't think it translates to potential lighter or romantic material; his flirting with Ava briefly was strange) and I was holding out for Tyler to recover and return someday. I am not interested in Nikolas #5 or 6.
    • AlwaysAMC - Your posts are a crack up; they make me laugh.  Thanks.  I especially like how detailed you get enthused about something, and how you curtly and flippantly you reject that which you find subpar.  LOL.   What's great about Annie is her increasing rooting value as time goes on.   I often wanted Annie to be victorious.  Watros infuses her with an energy and a vulnerability that really works, even at times when neither should. Soap viewers often remember and talk about the Big Moments, which is fine, but what I also find really interesting is the 1-2 week time frame that follows the Big Moment.  Later, there are scenes between Annie and Rick involving a trip to the hospital (no way am I telling you why and what happens - hopefully no one does) that I think are as well done as the Big Moment.  Astonishing stuff. Oh..and to reiterate...I ain't telling you sh*t.  You'll just have to suffer!  Ain't anticipation grand?  LOL.
    • @alwaysAMC Glad you made it to the soft rock theme. I share your disgust for the Gilly story, as many viewers did. Gilly was never a big character, but she was a part of why the early '90s feel real and different for GL, and she deserved a much better exit. This was also the last worthwhile role Amelia Marshall had on daytime (I don't even know if Passions fans would disagree). This was also Petronia Paley's only major chance at story and as someone who always appreciated her work, I'm sorry it did not go better for her. And I liked Charles Ewing a great deal on Loving, so I was even more unhappy with how they treated Griffin. It's a deeply offensive role, in many ways.  As for slapping, you may enjoy this, if you are able to find anything onscreen underneath all the ham. It really goes into hysteria in the second clip. As a bonus, you also get a quick glimpse of why the Billy and Mindy recasts were not accepted by viewers. One positive I will say about this clip is that it's one of the few times I remember the show making clear that Roger was able to defend himself if he had to do so.

    • ER Season 15 (first-ish time) BUFFY Season 3 (First time)
    • Probably less than a NBC or ABC soap. There were occasionally slaps. Women slapped men. And parents occasionally slapped their children. There was a period when Mindy and Roxie would fight. But slaps between women were few and far between. The only one between women I can really recall is Vanessa slapping Nadine. There was once where Bea Reardon almost slapped Vanessa, but she didn't. There are probably more, but in general, I always thought CBS soaps (aside from B&B, which used to love Stephanie slapping Brooke) shied away slapping, sort of the way they limited "hell"s and "damn"s to so many per week.

My favorite moments are with Erika and then Robin and Tim Stickney around 7/8 minutes. There are also little yellow bumper moments with the crew, which I enjoy more than the real ones.  There's also a music video at the end to I Will Survive, with Linda Dano and JFP having a cameo (they certainly do know how to survive). Also a fun bit with a frazzled crew member showing cards with the names of every EP she presumably worked for at the show.
    • I think in the long run they can probably get more out of Gio, even though I know GM probably won't be around long enough for it to matter. The show has a real problem on how to handle Nik in future, which affected Spencer. Laura is moribund and her role in Spencer's story didn't do her many favors. They would have kept Esme around even longer. A lot of Sprina fans would have hated GM as he was replacing NAC. And even the fans who did accept him wouldn't have mattered because Frank likely would have split that relationship up ASAP. There's a good chance we'd get a Spencer/Emma pairing, only with Emma and the actress playing her getting dragged on social media every day and with people calling her a racist.
