Pretty interesting week for soaps during November 17-21, 2008. This is probably the most important week of the year for soap ratings, but you can make the argument that the week of November 10-14, 2008 was the most important. The reason why I'm saying this week is pretty damn important is b/c its going to be pretty interesting to see what soaps are going to be able to stabilize, go up, or decline hard.

The ABC Soaps have alot of momentum going and it'll be pretty important to see if AMC and OLTL either stabilize or go up, but if they go down that's not good. GH had a huge week with the mob war and Elizabeth/Jason fire stuff so they should be going up.

The CBS Soaps are having a soft sweeps period and Y&R has not lifted the lineup enough to reflect a growth in the ratings. If Y&R does not stabilize at 3.6 or go up then I'm expecting some pretty low numbers from each of their soaps. B&B is starting to become watchable again.

The most interesting of the soaps belongs to DAYS and NBC. They had a really interesting week with heavy promotion of DOOL in prime time during Sunday Night Football, which is the network's current high-rated program. The Nick/Melanie stuff was done pretty good and the soap has been good all month long so the show deserves a growth for becoming watchable again. I expect at the very least a 2.0 or 2.1, but a 2.2 or 2.3 is very possible.

Can't wait to see them!

I am hoping for a 2.1 for OLTL- I was also hoping for the highest viewers on ABC like last week, but I forgot about GH and all of the mob s-it. I am hoping that OLTL will semi-maintain the prior week's ratings with at least a 2.1. The show was stellar.. if the show frops below 2.1, It is not good.

Y&R 3.6-3.7. I just want to see it edge back up to 4.0. It deserves it.

B&B- The show is more watchable, I loved the comedic stuff with Stephanie and whatshername- but for the most part the show is a terribly acted, completely cliched, boring- mess. The most overrated show on this planet. Yeah I know what is coming up with the accident- but I will not hold my breath.

I don't watch any of the other shows.. I frankly hate to see Days rewarded in the ratings. It deserves to drop like a stone so MAYBE that show can learn the error of its ways. It is almost too late.

Will be interesting to see if the Ryan/Annie stuff was enough to hold viewers. Love MCE, but not fond of the storyline. I'm really not feeling the Pratt love. I find the show only mildly better than under Babs and Jimbo, mostly because of Pratt's better pacing. Almost everything about the show, from the couplings to the stories, still seems SO forced, contrived, and gimmicky. I have a soft spot in my heart and I want it to succeed, but I just can't get into it.

I think if AMC can gain its footing, it also helps OLTL and GH slightly..

I have never been an AMC fan (was my mom's show, not mine) but I did tune in in highschool during the Natalie/Janet in the well storyline that drove AMC up to #2 in the ratings.

I hear such mixed reviews on AMC. Some say is its vastly imrpoved, some say its a mess...

Just from what I have read, I am not a Chuck Pratt fan. Melrose Place does not a good writer make in my book.

Why are you hoping for this? Are you a GL fan?

I am very interested in GL's ratings, because GL is now the canary in the coal mine.

Every soap will continue to trend down and reach new lower plauteaux. So, the question is whether GL has now reached a 1.4 plateau, or whether it will still hover around 1.5 for a while.

Given the 30% viewer loss in the last year, and the 21% in the key demo, GL is getting very close to the threshold where nothing can make it viable. As I recall (am I right?) it was renewed through Sept 09, with an option till Sept 10. If that is correct, my guess is that a decision will start to get made between now and March 09 about the one-year extension. Although I realize CBS might not announce a final decision until closer to the summer...

But for me the performance of GL between now and March is pivotal.

GL is really an important soap on a number of levels. First, if it fails, it will show that "lower cost experiments" do not catch on with viewers or lure new viewers. That, then, closes a cost reduction strategy for the other soaps. Second, if daytime's most venerable soap is cancelled...and there are not pickets outside CBS (there won't be...GL has fewer staunch advocates than AW had when they were cancelled), then that could embolden networks with other chestnut soaps to more strongly consider cancellation.

The two direct dominoes to fall, if GL is cancelled, would seem to be DAYS and ATWT. For DAYS, if NBC gets the signal that even CBS is paring down soaps, that will affirm for them that their business strategy (to kill Days) makes sense. DAYS has more ardent fans, but still... ATWT would seem to be in jeopardy for several reasons: [a] is it profitable for P&G/Telenext to make just one soap? ATWT is declining at the same rate as GL, but costs a lot more...since making it cheaper does not seem to be viable, it might just be time to cut bait; and [c] ATWT/GL are kind of a "pair" for CBS (just as the Bell soaps are), and so losing one of the pair makes it harder to sell the other one. It doesn't have an appropriate lead-in or follow-on show anymore.

So, for this week's ratings, I am beyond eager to see if GL stayed at 1.4, or if it can still pull off a 1.5.

Damn. I wish OLTL would have kicked GH's ass again.

At least they stayed at a 2.1- despite losing 80% of the viewers they gained. People really do tune in for the "stunts" and that's it.

Y&R's 3.7 is nice to see, they should be higher.

    • It was shuffled off the stove way before that. Think of the early summer stuff with Gio and Emma and then they basically dropped it for weeks at a time, and then also put them on the back burner.

    • After the slap it does feel inevitable - being arrested and thrown out right after her big win.
    • Yesterday it was Theo and Jada.  Today it's Chad and Belle.  What a mess.
    • I asked my soap historian GPT to help pull together the best available sources on Daniel Pilon’s run, and here’s what the research confirms: * Pilon played Max Dubujak on *Ryan’s Hope* from 1983–88. * He began appearing as Alan Spaulding on *Guiding Light* in 1988. * An academic source notes that he appeared as **Max and Alan simultaneously in November 1988 * His later-life interviews mention major upheavals, including losing his home in the Northridge earthquake and declaring bankruptcy in 1994.  That’s the factual foundation. Now for the human side of it. I’ll admit Pilon was never my favorite Alan. The Spauldings are supposed to have that patrician, Midwestern money vibe, and suddenly here comes this very European-sounding gentleman sweeping into Springfield like he wandered in from a different soap entirely. It created a strange tonal shift, at least in my memory. Whether he was intended to be temporary is hard to pin down, but honestly, looking at what he was dealing with in his real life, I don’t know that the show ever had a truly stable window to figure it out. He was going through marital strife, while being talked about as the "next James Bond" back in Canada, and juggling work on two soaps at once is a lot. Under those circumstances, the question of whether he was the “right” type for Alan becomes almost secondary to the fact that he was working through multiple emergencies while stepping into one of GL’s biggest roles. So for me, the story of his Alan isn’t just about casting fit. It’s about an actor navigating chaos and the show adapting on the fly. Also, the proverbial soap hill that I would defend its honor, is that Ron Raines in the final week was so amazing, that for me, it erases all prior memories of his performance.
    • I wish Nicole had swallowed but it is what it is lol
    • You're probably right, but it's such a mistake to have Dani return to Bill. I do not want that. I like Bill, but that's probably because he's so much better than his garbage wife. Having Dani take back the guy who NEVER stopped cheating on her during their marriage would be a terrible mistake.  Yes, it's a mistake I can see Dani making. That doesn't mean I want to see it.
    • That's funny, I totally didn't think about the possibility that they'll pin this on someone else.  I assumed they'd just roll him into the water.  Obviously, I would not make an ideal hitman. I hope it's not Laura.
