I think the show gradually changing Maggie from her original incarnation to a weepy victim sort of downgraded Victoria's character. However, the thing I noticed about Victoria was that she had the trappings of the typical heroine but with a backbone.

So tell me DS fans - were you Team Barnabas or Team Quentin??

When I was a kid, I waffled back and forth, but re-watching the show as an adult I would definitely have to say Team Barnabas. That rich baritone voice and dark sad eyes win out over blue eyes and sideburns. :P

There was a very early Joan Bennett movie on TCM last week, called Eleven Men and a Girl. It was a Joe E Brown movie (an annoying comedian of that era) and Joan was the romantic figure, along with James Hall. Her father was the football coach for a California university and she would bring talented players to the school and charm them if they would join the team. There was a scene with the latest guy where he wanted to give her his pin but she already had tons of them pinned to her dress, under a shawl.

She had short blonde hair at this time (she said she wasn't really noticed until later when she dyed her hair black) and she "sang" and played the ukulele! And in one scene she did some kind of wild, manic dance where the entire football team stood around her in a bedroom. Then they all took her on their shoulders and did some type of huddle. Given that this was a pre-code movie I almost wondered if it was going to get a little out of control...

I could definitely see her as Carolyn Stoddard's mother here.

From the July 1971 Daytime TV.

08-23-2010120529AM.jpg

release. Filming started March 29 at the same Tarrytown, N.Y., castle where the first Dark Shadows had been filmed last year.

Lara Parker, as Angelique; David Selby, Grayson Hall, Nancy Barrett, James Storm, John Karlen, Michael Stroke, and Kate Jackson are set for the movie; others will be added later.

Actors connected with Dark Shadows the past five years are hoping that the syndication of the show will be successful - because they'll receive residual payments when their shows are re-played.

Jonathan Frid, who emerged as the surprise star of Dark Shadows, left the Farewell Party early because he had to rush to his performance as star of a stage revival of Murder in the Cathedral, at Central Church hall. He has a Hollywood deal cooking and may leave New York. He will not be in the new D.S. film.

Alex Stevens, who played a werewolf, is directing all the stunts on the new D.S. movie. Stephen Calder, the hooded executioner on D.S., will be in the new D.S. movie, in which his face may finally be revealed.

Others attending the party were Virginia Vestoff, who is now a feature of the Broadway musical, 1776, Keith Prentice, formerly of the movie, Boys in the Band, Joan Bennett, who said she is moving to the New York suburbs; Chris Pennock, who's going into a Broadway play Abelard and Heloise; Thayer David, who's appearing in the play Uncle Venya in New York, Humbert Allen Astredo; Dennis Patrick, who played the Sheriff on D.S. and is now appearing in stock, and Clarice Blackburn (who had played the housekeeper on D.S. and other roles) who is now playing Amy Snowden on Where the Heart Is.

Quite a few former D.S. people dropped in, including Joel Crothers, who was until recently on Secret Storm, Jerry Lacy, who's now playing Simon Gilbey on As the World Turns; Jered Holmes, who plays Brian Blake on Another World, and Alexandra Moltke, who quit after two years when she became pregnant. Married to investment banker Phillip Henry Isles, she's the mother of a son, Adam, born June 27, 1969. She says she's happy being a housewife and is not returning to acting.

"We hate to see Dark Shadows go," said one of the actors. "It was like a repertory company. Some of us played more than one role, and we all learned so much. It was the only show on which you could get killed, and then come back as a ghost or in some other person. It was a fantastic experience for all of us."

Yes, Dark Shadows actors are gone, but not forgotten.

Is Maggie about to go cuckoo cacho? Sarah Collins (thanks credits!) just showed up singing "London Bridge is Falling Down" in quite the orphan/poltergeist way.

To be honest, I don't think I actually want anyone to answer that. NO SPOILERS!

Yes. Julia carried the show at certain points.

She was supposed to be Dr. Julian Hoffman, but a typo made it Julia and Dan Curtis said "Why not."

Oh wow, I find that fascinating. Can't wait until she premieres.

The funny thing is, compared to Victoria, I always thought the show centered around Julia. I think Victoria was gone around the time I started watching the reruns on Sci-Fi, and I found myself enamored with Grayson Hall's acting. I think, still to this day, I have not seen episodes of DS that have this Victoria character.

Victoria Winters was mostly a supporting character, but she was connected to practically everyone and every story. She narrated the beginning of each episode and always started with the classic line, "My name is Victoria Winters ..."

It's no secret that she was supposed to be Elizabeth's daughter somehow, but it never happened concretely, though there were major hints at the very beginning of the program.

Does anyone know why this Anthony George is playing Burke Devlin, and not the original actor? Is George only temporary or does he end up staying for the rest of the character's run?

  • Member

The first Burke left because of alcoholism. He just stopped showing up, I believe. Anthony George stays for the rest of Burke's run.

she was so interesting. I used to watch DS reruns on Ch 55 in NY (UHF) and then all of a sudden she was on OLTL too! Not pretty, but she had an interesting face. I had no idea until wikipedia that Grayson Hall was once nominated for an Oscar. Not too many soap stars can make that claim.
