While the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot is not moving forward at Hulu, with the streamer earlier this year opting against ordering additional episodes beyond the pilot stage, former “All My Children” star Sarah Michelle Gellar has signed on to play the Grim Reaper in the new film, “Thud,” a supernatural romance where her character finds love with the Devil, played by actor Rudy Pankow (“Outer Banks,” “Uncharted”).
According to Deadline, which first reported the news, the story is based on an original screenplay by Noga Pnueli (“Meet Cute”) and follows the Grim Reaper and the Devil as they meet at a three-day destination wedding, falling in love after colliding at the event, where they’ve each come to sow their own chaos.
The film will shoot in Los Angeles after receiving a California tax credit, with Derek Bishé and David Grove Churchill Viste producing and Mali Elfman directing. Helmstreet Productions’ Lindsay Helms and Joel Nevells are executive producers, alongside Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks from Divide/Conquer, Radio Silence‘s Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Dan Lawler and Pnueli. Casting is by Lisa Zagoria (“Brothers,” “The Present”).
Gellar previously worked with the team at Radio Silence, starring in the horror film “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come,” released in March of this year.
The 1995 Emmy Award winner for Outstanding Younger Actress in a Daytime Drama Series for her portrayal of Kendall Hart on “All My Children,” Gellar also appeared in the films “Stop! That! Train!” in theaters now, and last year’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” the third film in the series. On TV, she most recently starred in “Dexter: Original Sin” and “Wolf Pack,” both for Paramount+.
