June 27, 200817 yr Member Unless one of the ABC shows REALLY starts to tank....or one of them REALLy breaks away and does significantly better than the other two, all three will go together. The differences in ratings among the three shows, even the demographics, are negligible. And for the record, I think all three will be the last to go. I agree. It will be the whole ABC Daytime Division at once. But here's where we diverge. I think P&G will also get out of the business in one big swoop (mostly really a whimper when we look back at how they defined the genre for decades) and GL and ATWT will go at the same time. I only hope ATWT isn't subjected to the same indignities as GL. I suspect Y&R and B&B will be the last of the old soaps.

I'm just thinking (hoping) that at the very least ABC will give AMC and GH the goodbye they deserve by not lumping the cancellations together, even if they only separate them by a few months.

B&B's safety net is that it does so well internationally, it can lower it's licensing fee to CBS (if necessary) and still make lots of money. However, I still see the ABC soaps lingering the longest, even if it's only for a year or two once the other shows have all gone. It'll be interesting to see what happens....arguably more interesting than what's transpired on most of the shows themselves lately, lol.

What a bitchy thing to say, not including OLTL that's trying so hard right now. I've often wondered if B&B, because of its international reputation (and revenues) could survive as a syndicated show.
June 27, 200817 yr Member cbs might make more money if it cancels their lowest rated soaps and produce a game show or news show in house. yr and bb are safe.

June 27, 200817 yr Member GL, the oldest soap (and show) on the air, should, but probably won't, leave the air in 2009. Its status will probably buy it some time - especially if it is performing under budget. Will probably stay on the air until at least 2010.
June 27, 200817 yr Member I think we will start seeing them fall off when networks figure out how to replace them. Soaps do seem to still make money, although not near what they once did. The Today show experiment doesn't seem to be working that well IMO. It really seems a lot like Regis with the name Today. Once that happens, they will all start falling off all at once. I still think they will come up with some form of daily programming that tinkers with the soap model.

Remember when we soap viewers were threatened with something like "Big Brother" as our alternative? That was years ago and it still hasn't happenned. They haven't found the cheaper, more profitable formula yet.
June 27, 200817 yr Member I definitely believe B&B is the safest cause of their International success....
