You're right in that Tina hasn't been in Llanview in years, and that she has secrets she's trying to keep, which and in the interest of telling a coherent story requires her to lie low to hide from the police. But all those facts are exactly the reasons Tina would turn to her no-nonsense, nonjudgmental, cop-hating, wealthy brother Todd for concealment & protection... not the daughter she hasn't seen in years and years. Tina was the first person to accept Todd as family, and because she's been gone so long she hasn't had the dramatic ups and downs with him that Viki has. If Tina isn't revealing herself to other characters, it's because the writers have chosen to develop the story this way, and they could have chosen to have the character reveal herself to only Viki, only Todd, only Dorian, only David, or only Blair. But theyd didn't. They chose to write her into the Sara & Cris and Antonio & Talia story, the 2 least interesting couples on the canvas. For that, they should have just hired an unknown actress to play Tina,

The long-term possibilities would be so much greater if they had.

And I hate to break it to you, but this storyline already isn't working.

As for helping her family, if that's a motive for Tina to reveal herself to Sara, why not reach out to Jessica now that she (Tina) knows that Jessica's husband just died--and in a way so awful that Sara doesn't even want to talk about? Or to Viki, who's just lost a son-in-law? Viki was clearly upset the day Tina was lurking outside Llanfair... is Viki not part of the family worth looping into?

They are very well done. The have a huge N, much of it is done electronically now, they randomly sample DVRs, it's not difficult to generate a sampling frame because almost every household has at least one television. Ratings can not capture the intensity of fan reaction, but the rating system is very very good at capturing numbers, and that is what ratings are supposed to do.

Sure there will be improvement with technology. Technology already has improved the system, and as far as daytime, it has recognized that the genre has fewer viewers than previously thought. I agree with MarkH (also love his tables) that if there are any shortcomings it is in large group quarters. Dorms, nursing homes or assisted care facilities, prisons, ect are sampled but probably not well. I work on a college campus and don't think a huge number of people attending university congregate in front of their daily drama as they once did, but that just may be this campus.

I think the genre is dying. I also believe that Marcellina is correct. Soaps need to change and until the die and are re-generated in a new form, hardcore viewers will not allow that to happen.

But, considering that Tina is on the run, she really didn't have any intentions of seeking anyone for help. She only revealed herself to Sarah because Sarah happened to have been at Llanfair while Tina was lurking in the shadows. If Tina hadn't been affected by her daughter's presence at Llanfair, I highly doubt she would have sought out Sarah for a reunion. She's only having warm moments with her now because of all the things Cristian and Sarah have told her in regards to her being away for so long. Her conscience is at work.

Tina's only been in, what, six or seven episodes since she's come back, right? I think that's barely enough time to immediately peg what she's going to do, who she's going to do it with, the character's purpose in Llanview for the next two months. It's ridiculous to think that she's going to spend the entire two months with just Cristian, Sarah, Talia, and Tonio. With another writer, it wouldn't be so far-fetched, but with RC, it's a given that Tina will share scenes with her sister and brother and other important connections. Ron's respected character ties too much over the last couple of months to botch that up.

It's an unwritten rule that if the most popular and longest-running performer of a role wants to return in said role, they should be allowed to do so if there's room on the canvas. With a long-lasting character like Tina, one who has made a big impact on the show, you can't just have interchangeable actresses playing the part. Andrea Evans hasn't played the character in 18 years, but she probably knows her more than anybody else. And I doubt people would have been satisfied with a new actress as Tina in this storyline. If people dislike it with AE in it, they'll dislike it even more if it's some random actress.

That's completely, totally, 100% subjective.

So, you're saying that it would be in character for Tina Lord to see that her family is hurting, stop thinking about herself, become completely selfless, and risk going to jail among other things? Spending time with Sarah is softening her a bit right now, but I wouldn't expect an overnight transformation.

Two months might seem short, but I think that it'll be enough time to sufficiently continue the character.

Boo to spoilers!! Because Toups was so spoiled I went and got spoiled myself! That spoiler is awesome! I LOOOVE it!

I also applaud the way Carlivati is involving the entire canvas in a SL. I don't see this SL as propping Antoino and Talia but rather making it a canvas-wide story. I was just starting to wonder if the show would fade Talia and Antonio to the back but they haven't. For now IMO, Tina can do what she is doing this storyline is just beginning and it is interesting to watch imo.

I have a feeling viewers turned in to see Tiger Woods instead of soaps. The 1.7 for ATWT is so unacceptable. When is something going to be done at ATWT?? Last week was full of Janet and Liberty..and the stupid pairing of Holden and Carly. No one wants to see them Goutman!!!

I am not surprised by Y&R's 3.3s. It's just a matter of time before Y&R hits 3.0. It's completely boring now. There's nothing to be happy about. Nothing to make us tune in (even though I still do). I'm depressed about this. Hogan, where are you?

I saw today's show and found it dull and boring.

He didnt destroy ATWT. It was good until he ran out of steam. And he was just getting his groove on at Days before he was fired.

And JP said it before I think, once a soap reaches these lows (Y&R from recent 4's to these 3's), it will never recover. Well, not really never, but seeing what's being done to improve it, never seems like a realistic option.

Josh Griffith should be fired. I really do believe he's the next one to be fired at Y&R.

Hell, everyone at CBS needs to be fired, Barbara Bloom doesn't get half the criticism that other network execs get. Ever since she came to CBS Daytime, things have been going downhill at a rapid pace.

    • Shut up, Dante and Lois.  I actually don't mind this particular soap trope, but in the context of this storyline, it just feels forced and unnecessary. If anything, this Dante/Gio tension needed to begin months ago. Plus, this storyline, in general, isn't doing Lois any favors either.  Emma comforting Gio was really sweet though. It's definitely time for the two of them to have their first kiss. And, Joss playing Secret Agent Barbie will just never work.
    • Note to makeup - Smitty’s eyebrows, bad clamshell look.

    • Okay I can buy that when Brook Lynn was a teen.  Now she knows the child is a boy one would think she'd be slightly suspicious.  Then again, Gio looks nothing like either of them so maybe not lol.
    • I've been behind & just got caught up & the last 3 days were amazing!
    • Yeah.  The hot, poor bad boy with a chip on his shoulder but with a heart of gold was a common soap trope in the 80s

    • That's been an issue with me... the lack of a cohesive 'Have Not' crowd that has focus other than Leslie/Eva.   I would beef up Jan, Mona, Laura, Joey, and few other male characters.. and not just be out to overthrow the Duprees.. but co-existing and broadening the scope of the show since the show is called Beyond the Gates. I think the set up the show has with everything revolving around the Duprees will become predictable especially if they always win.   It would be like Victor Newman on Y & R for 40+ years.. always winning, hardly ever losing.   With MVJ/Guza.. both trained under that mindset... I fear that will happen.   I've always heard from a performer that is playing a character like Leslie/Dana that you have to find the victim/hurt beneath the surface in order to play a villain/villainess... and I think that's why I enjoy watching her.. because she brings so much more to the part than what the writers put on the page.
    • I figure that was really hard for Dom to do. I completely GET why they wrote it the way they did but I wonder if it was necessary. Meanwhile I have 2 really icky ideas in my head. Drew is going to blame Tracy KNOWING it was not her. Dante is going to blame Lulu.  After that, everyone else is going to be mad at Lois.  Tracy is going to double down on wanting to get rid of Sonny. Sonny's going to be more dug in to stay because he now has a new descendant.
    • I can actually buy Brook Lynn being so self-absorbed and incurious that she never thought to question why her mom and grandma were so attached to Gio.
    • It was overkill and the whole narrative Lois was too nice to the orphan kid when he was little, WHAT? Like Emma said no one thinks Gio is a troublemaker that gets 14-year-old kids drunk for fun. That being said, Lulu figured this Gio thing out in episode, but Brook Lynn never once questioned Lois and Gloria's attachment to a child that was the same age as the baby she gave up?  Ever?
