I love Nell. One of my favorite soap characters and such a great story arc.

Ed's not bad but I mostly just notice his wig.

I wonder if Faith Catlin was ever asked if she played up any incestuous undertones in her relationship with Ed.

When I watched Ryan's Hope from the beginning for the first time on SoapNet, I really liked Faith Catlin and thought it was refreshing that they had a female character that was more of a nerd. Then I absolutely loved Catherine Hicks's take on the character; I found her really natural and likable. So then to see Faith Catlin again after that when SoapNet started from the beginning again was super jarring.

When you think about all the wonderful people we lost in 2024, it really reminds you that no one - no matter how rich or famous or INfamous they are - is immune to death; that it is so important to make each and every day we have count; and that our ultimate purpose in this life is to try and leave the world a little better than how we came into it.

Not sure how recent these interviews are (they do mention the oral history) but they are interviews with Tom Lisanti and Louise Shaffer. I should warn they sound like they were recorded while being buried underground.

Our beloved benefactor strikes again, this time with a late July 1984 episode. I'm certain it's from the week of July 23-27, and believe it might be from Friday, July 27 (notice David Hartman plugging next week's episodes of Good Morning America, as opposed to the next day's).

Thanks @Franko. Looks like the first 7 minutes are "new."  Then we start getting material that is up on freeflyur's channel as 7-27-84. Is this the full episode?

Wasn't expecting to hear such a horribly depressing backstory from this Pru character (I had never heard of her) ...and of course as is often the case on soaps, especially from this period, she is written as if she just got out of Song of the South or Lil Abner.

And I see Rick has a horribly depressing, melodramatic backstory too. Grant Show eventually became an OK actor, but he was never suited to handle this type of material. Who is the audience for all this trauma?

It's always nice to see Cali Timmons, even if her whole episode amounts to flashbacks and wandering around a room.

I've never bothered to watch Robin Mattson's Delia because, frankly, I have no real interest in the show by this point, but she's not bad at all. Beyond people probably just not caring about seeing Robin as Delia after years of seeing her as Heather Webber, I wonder if people had no use for these same old stories for Delia - even when they brought Ilene Kristen back in 1982, they didn't work. Only when they allowed for some changes in Delia in Ilene's last return did things click into place.

The scenes with Dave waiting on Maggie are so oddly filmed, more suited to a PBS project than a soap. I kept wondering if he was going to get stabbed. And the music...honestly the music in general is on overdrive in this episode.

I can't imagine how people who watched back in the day felt. The whole thing is very hollowed out. There isn't even a Ryan in sight, aside from Pat, briefly.

It's always amusing to see the differences in quality between the original film shots for the opening and the cheaper video replacements. Who is the leg lift lady? Is that Pru?

    • That was so surprising to me today. I didn’t see any spoilers that this was coming up so I loved it!
    • Well, VI was leaving, and while Long admits that killing him was stupid...I do agree with letting him go with a big bang...body missing.  They spent a lot of time and money on Infinity, (which I think might have gotten a bit of a better reputation had it not been the harbinger of a total tonal change with the Bauers and Reardon's decimated and its all Reva and the Lewis and the weird people hanging out around Kyle) so they needed it to end dramatically. They could have done so much more with having Alex go after Kyle and Billy, but that ends and she starts moping over weird and boring Simon. With Kurt..what were you going to do.. cute but boring and perfect and with ties to no one (they had a nice little thing where Bea took him under her wing when everyone left but then she did too..) If they had the balls they would have had Rick and Mindy jump in the sack ( I know, Mindy should have learned birth control by then) I would have had it be Mindy who knows about Rick's drug use and she tries to help him...(not that nobody who came and went) of course, Kurt and Roxie misunderstand..that on top of her bad Sampson Girl thing leaves him to leave her temporarily, and in grand soap tradition, Rick and Mindy console each other (again, I would write it that they always really did, and Mindy rushed into things with Kurt) and she gets knocked up, and loving Rick but also Kurt she chooses to believe it is Kurts (which I could see Princess Mindy doing "My life is perfect and I will it that way, this is Kurts kid")But, she had the dumb model thing, then she burned down the house he was building, she tried to get prefers and he dies (but also Kobe was the one who built him up, then she was gone when he was let go.) Ross believe it or not is one of the last of the "old guard" characters, beside Ed (who is now FauxEd) and Maureen, and Henry and Van (who is ties to being the Lewis family mope.) JVD has made jokes that they didn't write him out as they simply forgot that he was there!
    • Excellent! The OLTL-GH promo places this and the RH episode (which I assume aired directly before this AMC) as airing during the week of Aug. 20.
    • Thanks! There's never enough early 1980s AMC around.    The only actor I don't recognize is the actress playing Wanda, Mike's agent.
    • lol he sounds like he's speaking as Randy
    • Dani going to Bill's house is karma for how he messes with Martin. It is totally separate, but I can't feel sorry for Bill when he's constantly antagonizing a family he says he wants nothing to do with.
    • I understand what Lois did. I can see everyone's side, even if I don't agree with them.  That  proves it's a good story    Lois is far from ruined
    • Oh wow. Thanks so much for sharing!!!
