there are only two that I don't recognize:

the lady in red shooting a rifle

and is that Chaz in the black & white shot in the tux?  Who are the ladies surrounding him?

Also, how does their version of King Tut's tomb look worse in photos than it did on tv?

I’ve enjoyed reading this thread over the past few weeks.

I loved RH, but I think its very premise limited its run. It was about a family rather than a locale. How many times could Pat, Siobhan, Frank, etc. get married or divorced. I do think the run was shortened by bad creative decisions, plus moving the show to noon to make room for that awful Loving.

Some other random thoughts:

  • I wouldn’t have killed off Mary. Once you start killing off core family members on a show about a family (rather than a locale), it limits you. I would have sent her off screen for a while. And I think Margaret Colin would have made a good recast. I do think they should have stuck with Mary Carney a while longer - I think she could have grown into the role.
  • Sarah Felder was so good and unique as Siobhan. They really blew it by letting her go - she could have been the show’s younger leading lady for years. Though - this may be unpopular - I thought Ann Gillespie was decent. Not nearly as good or unique as Felder, but decent. I remember liking Barbara Blackburn a lot, but she didn’t have much time to shine.
  • Karen Morris’ Faith was so unlikable. A poster on another board claimed she continued the same type of character that Cathy Hicks played. Not at all! I wouldn’t have objected to her being locked in a sarcophagus during the merit Kara story.
  • I haven’t seen much of Geoff Pierson’s Frank, but I didn’t like him. I thought the actor was good, but the character seemed uptight. I liked John Sanderford a lot but the show was in decline by then.
  • I liked the 1983 “back-to-basics” promo a few pages back. I thought that it was interesting that they had the same or similar scenes to the show’s intro (Siobhan giving Maeve a plant; the Ryan kids jogging; the soccer ball scene), but on videotape rather than on film (as in the intro). I guess they had two crews shooting those scenes. Strange that they would go to that expense.
  • I liked both Ilene and Randall as Delia. But I found it ridiculous that the family would still put up with her after some of the things she did. That said, I hated how mean some of these sanctimonious people were too her. She was a very troubled person. They were like the popular kids picking on the outcast who was desperate to be accepted and took the abuse.
  • I never could stand Roger. And for a while, he had the worst haircut on the show.
  • They missed the boat by not developing Bucky and Clem more.

I aggressively hated the material they gave her character. I just couldn't stop myself. They immediately made two huge mistakes:

- involving her with Roger, who by that time had become the most unwatchable character on the show for me

- yet again degrading Delia for her benefit, as Randall Edwards was very adept at making that punishing material work in her favor

I can't even be objective enough to go back and re-watch. It's a shame as Maureen Garrett should have been a real coup for the show.

I agree with most of this, especially the part about Bucky, Clem, and Faith.

Yeah i cant believe someone thought Kathleen Tolan was a good replacement for Mary Carney. Your right, she should have been at least a year

I did like Nicollette as Mary. I wonder why they fired her. Did ABC wanna make Siobhan the main focus?

The cynic in me thinks that the brief recasts for Faith and Delia (Nancy Barrett, Robyn Millan) were deliberate. “Hey, let’s cast somebody so wildly inappropriate or bizarre that the audience will be relieved when someone normal shows up.”  Going by this strategy, they should have gone with Kathleen Tolan as Kate Mulgrew’s immediate successor. Niki Goulet looked good by comparison, but I thought she was still pretty weak.

I still have to laugh at Nancy Barrett showing up as Faith, who had been a socially-maladjusted, emotional basket case just a month or two earlier. Suddenly, Faith is this glamorous, vivacious blonde, and she flounces into her first scene with Jill chirping, “All better now!”

February 25, 1979

"Ryan's Hope" has finally found a replacement for Ilene Kristen in the coveted role of spoiled sex goddess Delia Ryan. After months of auditioning talent around the country and an open call in the trade papers, Randall Edwards, debuts as Delia next week. Randall is a California actress with credits in theater, movies, nighttime TV, and bit roles on "The Young and the Restless" and "General Hospital." She's a singer and dancer with a degree from the California Institute of Arts. She plays the flute,is a pool hustler, and blackjack whiz, and is a swift manueverer in the martial arts. The producers report that they're ecstatic with Randall. "She truly is the embodiment of Delia,” they claim.

March 1979

"Ryan's Hope" producers were so pleased with the work of Randall Edwards, the newest Delia, they decided to reshoot two programs taped with Robyn Milan playing Delia.

    • Where do you discover this crazy rumor??
    • Jill Farren Phelps was always very skilled at saying what she meant onscreen in the bluntest way possible, like whenever she wanted fans to support one character vs. the other (hence Megan McTavish groaning about having to write Kale Browne's Sam Rappaport into three days a week at OLTL). Perhaps you should consider doing the same. Historically your intent is always far more obvious than your efforts at coy embroidery anyway. You believe people are dismissing Phelps' accomplishments, and suggest misogyny and fan blinders allow people to too easily pigeonhole and dismiss her skill set. I think we all understand her varied skill set. We're saying it's not enough to make up for her deficiencies as a storyteller and creative. JFP was undoubtedly a skilled technical producer. As a solo storyteller, and de facto HW, she was a repeat and predictable failure. She was not the first or last EP (male or female) to think she was a writer. If you want us to stop taking your behavior personally when you suggest misogyny is at play in board opinions of JFP, perhaps you should consider spending the next 10+ years here not acting like you're the only one who gets it.

Melissa was here today & we went to Michael's Crafts & Ofc Depot. In Michael's there were two beautiful LITTLE girls who kept staring at me, so I gave them a littel wave & very quietly said HI & then did back. I told Melissa they were staring at me. She smiled & said "Purple. A lot of little girls love purple & you forget but you have purple hair. Seeing you their whole imaginations are transformed! Thinking "That lady has purple hair. That means I can have purple hair! They had no clue before seeing you that it was possible." I just laughed & laughed.
    • This opening scene is hilarious...it's like someone wrote out the script for Philip with one hand. And Rick...sniffing a scarf over and over. And in their next scene they are still sniffing the [!@#$%^&*] scarf as the camera stays all over Philip's bare chest and armpits as he keeps working out. Insane stuff.

Bay City better be ready, because I'm back!   At Vicky's apartment she is once again drowning in doubts and jealousy. Deep down she realizes that her dream wedding will be a farce and nothing can change that. Bridget tries to calm her down, but the heroine is determined to suffer. She is not hearing any positive thoughts. She doesn't believe Jamie will marry her. At the Cory Publishing building another farce is in process. Iris, once again pretending to be the angel of love and sisterhood... is telling Mac and Rachel some wonderful news. When Iris has good news, you really need to look out for yourself. That's when things are bad. So what are the news? Miss Devil has put Amanda up for an award! Mac is smiling from ear to ear, and Rachel is suspicious. Maybe that's the effect Iris is looking for. To once again accent on the fact that Rachel doubts and criticizes her daughter. Iris will do anything to destabilize their relationship. She is like a cancer. Back to Vicky! Jamie is at the door. Looking like a sad puppy, he has come with a surprise. No, he is not gonna leave her and her unborn... Not yet. He has bought her earrings. Sad face. How nice. NOT. Victoria, of course... manages to break one of them the moment she touches it. Bad premonition maybe? She was back in hysterics. It's not easy to trap a man into marriage. Then you have to live with someone that didn't want you in the first place.  We were introduced to a new character (to me at least she is new) - Cass's sister - Stacey. She is giving me "hidden skeletons in the closet"-vibes. Love a girl like that. Stunning actress. I like her. The highlight of the episode was the strange and creepy reveal of Evan the escort... hugging someone named Janice's grave. I remember she had an issue with Rachel... and Rachel killed her in self defense I think... It was hinted in prior episodes, but I lack the context and story. I just know that everyone at the Frame house was mad that Rachel killed the bish. But I also got the impression that this Janice was sick in the head. So Evan is now talking to her grave and telling her he is going to ruin Rachel's life basically. Oh, Evan... I liked you better as a sexy gigolo.  Overall - 10/10 - how can I rate it lower when I haven't watched in months!!!

    • Once again, Marlena and Kayla were used very effectively and I couldn’t be happier.  Marlena counseling Johnny and then Chanel was the best part of today. They’re really delving into the human emotion of this storyline and I think that’s a good thing. It feels so much mature than it was before. EJ’s fear about what could happen to Johnny if he doesn’t let go of his anger could lead to some really good storylines in the future.  I also really appreciate the way that Paula/Jeanne are mixing it up and having different characters interact with each other. It was nice to see Shawn and Johnny remember that they’re cousins and share a scene together. I liked the parallel that was drawn between the two of them, and what’s going on with their fathers. I did have mixed feelings about everything with Cat though. I enjoyed Chanel warning her about EJ, mostly because it played into the way that she was written today. But I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Chad/EJ scenes. The two of them discussing Chad’s potential feelings for Cat didn’t really keep my interest.  But above all, I feel that everyone is being used more effectively and that we’re getting a better understanding of everyone as well. And that was exactly what Days needed.
    • It's a wild story for sure, especially the final conclusion (and fireworks offcamera, like Victoria Wyndham tearing into Michael Logan).
