Seven soap divas ready for primetime

Filed under: Daytime, TV Squad Lists

For some actors, the soaps are a stepping stone to a career in features. That's how it was for Meg Ryan, who began as Betsy on As the World Turns. For others, like Eva Longoria Parker, the place she made her mark before becoming one of the Desperate Housewives was as Isabella on The Young & the Restless. Allison Janney is another one. She was a lowly -- but brilliant -- maid at the Spaulding mansion on Guiding Light before lighting up the screen as C.J. Cregg on The West Wing and winning four Emmys along the way. Looking at the current crop of actresses at work in daytime today, who are the women, the divas if you will, who are ready for primetime, nay silver screen, success? Here's a list of seven who have caught my eye.

Gallery: Soap Divas

1) Jennifer Landon, Gwen, As the World Turns

In daytime, there's usually one way to tell if an actress (or actor) really has the chops, the real skills and talent, for a major career. If she can play twins, or has a double that's nothing like her original character, she's someone to watch. Michelle Forbes proved her mettle on Guiding Light as Sonni and her evil twin Solita. On As the World Turns, Jennifer Landon has done the same. Playing both Gwen and Cleo. Jennifer's shown her range. The two characters are completely unique and that's a credit to her talent. But even before doing the twin thing, Jennifer had already impressed. She made her character, which could have easily been a soap opera cliché -- the troubled teen -- more than the words in the script. She made her real. She won the Daytime Emmy in 2006 as Outstanding Younger Actress, and repeated the feat in 2007. The daughter of the late actor Michael Landon, Jennifer has recently decided to leave ATWT, so she's already on her way to something better. She's definitely ready for primetime.

2) Orlagh Cassidy, Doris, Guiding Light

You know that cell phone commercial where the mother is frustrated because her daughter won't stop texting her BFF Jill? That commercial's been so successful, there's now a sequel in which she's playing Scrabble with the kid and complaining that she can't spell because she's using text abbreviations instead of words! Well, that exasperated parent is Orlagh Cassidy. On Guiding Light, she steals every scene she's in as ballbuster D.A. Doris Wolfe. You'd never imagine she's the same actress. Then a few weeks ago, I saw her in the feature Definitely, Maybe. Whatever the size of the role, Orlagh Cassidy stands out. Cast her on Law & Order and she'll give Sam Waterson all he can handle as an adversary!

3) Alison Sweeney, Sami, Days of Our Lives

As the host of The Biggest Loser, Alison Sweeney is already sorta in primetime. But she's an actress more than a hostess. She should be in a drama or comedy series because it's as an actress that Alison Sweeney is going to become a star. As Sami, she's shown many arrows in her quiver. She can be a witch as well as a good girl. Unlike many young actresses on the soaps, Alison projects a personality as well as a character. That's star power and it would great to see her leave the security of NBC's daytime for NBC's primetime. She has a flair for comedy, and as Sami has shown her ability to do the most extreme type of storyline, so give her a shot on My Name Is Earl. She could be Joy's long-lost witchy step-sister. That'd be a hoot!

4) MacKenzie Mauzy, Pheobe, The Bold & the Beautiful

If you didn't watch intently, you might think of MacKenzie Mauzy as just another sweet young thing. She is beautiful, no doubt about that, and she plays sweet great. As Phoebe, the child of privilege, born into a family immersed in the fashion business, she's had lots of chances to appear as a mannequin. But what I like about MacKenzie is that there seems to be something brimming beneath the surface. She's like a still water that runs deep. On an episode of Cold Case last year, she showed off her hidden depths as an Amish girl who goes off on Rumspringa and winds up falling in with the wrong crowd in south Philly. For much of that episode, I recall watching her as Anna, and not recalling that I'd been seeing her regularly on B&B. She was so completely submerged into this other character, that she appeared new to me. That opened my eyes to MacKenzie Mauzy and why I can see her very soon out of daytime and into primetime.

5) Farah Fath, Gigi, One Life to Live

There's something about Farah Fath. She's arresting. Not because she's a great beauty or a drama queen, but because she's interesting. You can't explain that indefinable quality she has, but when she's on screen, you want to watch her. There's a naturalness to her performances. As Gigi, a single mom who's been working as a waitress at a truckstop in Paris, Texas, she's been terrific. Playing opposite an actress as formidable as six-time Emmy winner Erika Slezak (Viki), Farah's more than held her own. When she was on Days of Our Lives -- as Mimi -- she rarely had a storyline. It was like the powers-that-be on that show never saw Farah as more than a graduated day player, because that's how she began on that show. On OLTL, she's been thrust into a main story and she's coming through like gangbusters. I hope she doesn't get too comfortable on daytime, though. She has a quirky style and she'd be a great support to America Ferrera on Ugly Betty, for instance, or perhaps another waitress at The Pie Hole on Pushing Daisies (but I may just be thinking of pies because of her playing a waitress on OLTL!).

6) Carolyn Hennesy, Diane, General Hospital

Amid the mob action in Port Charles, with the Corleone organization going up against the Zacchara family, you'll find that Carolyn Hennesy is giving the best performance of the year as Sonny's lawyer, Diane Miller. Arch, sharp, biting and brilliant, Carolyn's made a character that on paper was strictly one-dimensional into a flesh and blood, dynamic powerhouse. For the longest time, the role of the lawyer on this show has been nothing more than a device to get Sonny and/or Jason -- Sonny's enforcer -- out of trouble with the authorities. But the way Carolyn has played Diane, she's not a tool. She's a fashionista, ogling over a pair of Jimmy Choos like Carrie Bradshaw's big sister. She can also handle an automatic weapon if necessary, as it was in one show when she and fellow legal eagle Alexis Davis, were waylaid at a biker bar on the way to a Litagator of the Year award ceremony. The bottom line about Carolyn Hennesy is this: she's better than the work she's being given to do. She's a star ready to explode. No actress on daytime now has shown that Allison Janney-potential as much as Hennesy. She would make mincemeat out of Alan Shore on Boston Legal.

7) Christel Khalil, Lily, The Young & the Restless

It may seem like hyperbole perhaps, but a young actress like Christel Khalil could be another Merle Oberon or Ava Gardner. Even though she's still very young, only 21, there's an exotic quality and ethereal presence that she possesses. She's currently playing a young girl, Lily, who's being thrust into a modeling career with all the inherent, potential problems. A bulimia story seems to be on the horizon, and I'm sure she'll bring the requisite emotional turmoil to the role. But for an actress with her look, she deserves something more challenging. Maybe a mini-series or TV movie set in another country or a faraway kind of story would suit her.

While I admit that Christel had her moments during her first run, this writer is definitely thinking with her/his eyes and not his brain. And Mauzy's pretty dreadful.

And why must there be only girls? I'd love to see John-Paul Lavoisier and Trent Dawson doing a sitcom or dramedy. And of course Tom Pelphrey on something bigger than the small screen that's TV. I don't even watch GL but whenever I see clips of his work at the Emmy's, he blows me away LOL.

    • Annnnd it's time!!!   Oooo more developing of the Anita story.   Bill and these hand moments.   OOOOOOOOO...it's a Jazmen episode!!!   So Nicole is hitting the anger part of her grief, I see.    Hehe. TIDE sighting!!
    • -- Kai spends more time in the hospital than anyone I know. I've never seen a patient held back from being discharged like this guy. -- All this concern over Lulu's adoption story is wild. Just what in the hell in that story will upset people? Am I missing something?
    • Except she was the last to know yesterday
    • While I'm waiting for the new episode to start...let's talk about yesterday's episode.   I honestly really loved it. THIS is what I mean when I talk about how there should be an A story that is dealing with its fallout while the next A story is being built. And then there was even a C plot going on.    The fallout from the Silk Press Sheila/Eva reveal continued. And there were so many elements in play. Beats were being played. And I loved every moment of it. Ted/Eva defiantly going to the country club and being more successful at it than Bill&Hayley. I love that Ted is willing to fight for his marriage. I really want to see where it goes. I didn't like the town gossip, cuz we already have one in Nosy Nurse, but she did keep the tension up. The Nicole/Dani dynamic as sisters being in play...and I'll be in the minority and say that while Dani was Dani, I didn't find her being self-absorbed at all in those scenes. She has already been established as being willing to go there. For herself. AND her sister. So her going in on Ted and Eva was like her. Her dragging her sister out of the house was also like her. No problems. And I can't say how much I loved Jan getting her moment with Silk Press Sheila. Not to mention how much I LOOOOOOVE the showdown between SilkPress and Eva at Orpheny Gene in front of everybody!!!! Giving old school soap. And SilkPress's warning she got more up her sleeve (with a snap) was delicious. And awww at Martin comforting Eva. Kat ain't going to like that.   Speaking of Martin...IT'S HAPPPPENIIIIINGGGGGG!!! Now we are getting words from the night in question. So good to see them FINALLY building out that OTHER A story they started. And good on Martin for backing out from the presidency. I already said I love that the writers found a plausible reason for him to back out. The plot point served its purpose...to get a sense of Martin's personality. Now that he's been built up so we know what to expect from him, no need for it. Moreso since SilkPress's presence will continue to trigger that secret right out of him. Fingers crossed.   And while all that goodness was going on...we got a B plot in the form of Doug/Joey/Vanessa. I like it. It's been allowed to grow. All POVs have been seen except for Joey's really. So seeing him put Doug on the hook officially (so this should be climaxing by end of May then since Doug has one week?) because he wants Doug to move money through Vanessa's business. I continue to wonder where it will go now that I know (and apparently missed it) what Joey's endgame is. I mean...will Doug do it? Will Joey get payback on Vanessa? Or will Vanessa fall into Joey's bed? I feel the show has done a good job developing Doug and Vanessa enough that I am invested in the story. Sidenote...ask and I shall receive aka Dani/Vanessa brief moment at the country club. I really miss them together.    As for the C plot...well...I'm in the minority as well. I actually liked the Ashley/Derek scenes. Not cuz the typical soap himbo scenes...lol...but it was just a nice counterpoint from the other stories going on. And it was just nice to have an episode with A, B, and C stories going on and NOT be jarring and ALSO no quick cuts to another scene. It FLOWED. I actually like Ashley and while her last appearances in solo Derek scenes were DOA, I felt there was more going on. At least this time. It was building on what was already growing...Ashley's annoyance at Derek moving in. Derek...being a typical guy. I am hoping that will go somewhere. And I love that we got another Jan/Ashley scene. At the moment, it's the only thing giving us a clue to Ashley's inner life. That said...I really do want to see her out of her story bubble. There's so much potential with her and her career as a nurse. Moreso given what's going on there.    As for the mysterious stranger...well...I wonder how they are going to play it. Since most of us (but not all so not discussing it farther) know a bit about him.    As for the coda...it is bittersweet now knowing it was Maurice's last scenes. I mean...what do you all think? A nice point for him to stop? We got to see Eva accepting by the father she always wanted to be with since Day 1. Nicole looks on. Quite soapy.
    • I love the thought of Eva becoming this huge celebrity hairstylist, and the future character crossover that can happen with fun cameos, too.
    • I assume the target audience is as distracted as I am by the plot hole that University Hospital does not own a means of production for Versavix, and that's where the profits are found. Researchers at publicly funded universities can profit from successful drug discoveries, but it is often a small percentage compared to the profits of the pharmaceutical company.  Thus, it makes no sense why both Xander and EJ would try to buy the hospital (and its right to the invention).  As opposed to buying a pharmaceutical company, which would make exponentially more profit from Versavix, as well as the many patents that they now own on Dr. Rolf's research!   And, that if Xander benefitted from his wife's knowledge about a drug being researched at her hospital, and one day later he made a bid for said hospital, that's called fraud as it is akin to insider trading. For example, if my husband was a real estate agent, and he told me to buy this undervalued property because he knew there was a $1,000,000 diamond buried under the toilet.  That would be fraud, because his duty would be to get the best price for his client.  But, if he would directly profit, because as my husband he would get half of the profits from the diamond, that's fraud.  And that's what Sarah did. She waited until the hospital was worth nothing to tell her husband to buy now for cheap, because it will be worth a fortune in future because of the drug. Thus, she profits from the University's misfortune.  And once again, Sarah is the true evil mastermind of Salem.

    • Some other thoughts on today's show. I don't care for Bill/Hayley as a couple. I think that Bill is sexy and looked good on today's show. But I don't think that him and Hayley really have any chemistry. They seem mostly isolated on the show unless someone like Dani is sparring with one of them. I do wonder what is going on with Bill's hand and why it is trembling. He is trying to keep that from Hayley. I also don't care for June right now. I like Jacob/Naomi but would rather see them do something else than what they are currently doing with June right now.  I liked Nicole/Dani continuing to support one another after the fallout from their marriages. I think it's interesting that Nicole asked Dani if something was going on between her and Andre and Dani lied about it. I do wonder if Dani/Andre are starting to have stronger feelings for each other (maybe even falling for each other a little bit). It does seem like stronger feelings are developing between them and I wonder where that may lead for their storyline. And I enjoyed Anita/Vernon as well. I like that he supports her and wants her to do the reunion with the Articulettes. It does seem like at one of them really doesn't want much to do with her after she reached out on today's show. But maybe they will reunite and there will be drama between her and her bandmates. I am interested in seeing who the show may cast as her bandmates. I hope they get a couple of good actresses in the role.
    • Looks like the Townhouse to me, I've been calling it Paulina's Townhouse (which Marlena and Kayla also use).
    • Angela Bassett was also on somewhere in 1985 wasn't she. The NY soaps did so much for struggling actors. That's one of the reasons I will never stop hoping we get more of them.
