DAYS: Corday Speaks to TV Guide

Yes, Corday's some evil master mind plotting and scheming to trick us all and lie to us.

He's just a bullshit--r.

Plain and simple. He says what we want to hear but honestly, with such fan fury and at a time like this (Days will end in 2009) he has no room or reason to lie or make things up.

Frankly, I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm stunned he even mentioned Doug and Julie.

My main worry.

Someone's gonna die.

What big story could it be?

And why isn't Peter Reckell mentioned?

Yeah, y'all know I'm going to be more reserved.

On the one hand, whatever. We've all been through this before- I'm down for the ride one last time. And if their balance-shifting was a way to try and build a foundation around new, cheaper characters, then returning right to the core 4 and the Dimera/Brady feud is kind of...whatever.

On the other hand, ok. Reveal the mystery behind the feud. But, if you're reading, writers, know now that you will never satisfy all of us, or even a majority. So don't even try. Just come up with something good that is revealed in an entertaining, interesting way. My only expectation is that you've actually planned it out ahead of time (well, I expect the reason to suck, too, but I'm focusing on the journey not the actual revelation).

And, please, whatever you do time it right. Don't get all Reilly on me with 18 months of garbage, but don't get all panicked either and feel the need to throw that reason out there during this actual summer, unless you're going to start prepping me for it by early May (for a late August reveal). Don't rush the Reveal of All Reveals.

I'm a little nervous about his comment about an unbelievable storyline, because I don't know how I'll react if I see an advertisement for The Most Shocking (whatever) in Daytime. Don't flash me back to the stupid neverending kidnapping stuff.

I don't buy this as some kind of pre-planned thing, though. Frankly, I think little enough of Corday to see him as a fairly stupid man when it comes to running the show. But I don't think of him as so stupid that he would withhold vets just for a summer storyline. Seriously, to sacrifice a couple sweeps periods, knowing the trend for all soaps but one is a continual downward spiral, you're going to hold back? It doesn't matter in the long run, though. As long as it's good story coming up.

px I HEART you. I agree with your feelings completely.

And why isn't Peter Reckell mentioned?

I noticed that too, but didn't think too much of it b/c he mentioned the big 4.

I think that may be an error by the person who transcribed this article (not me). He may well be mentioned in the actual article.

I would think so too. No way they ignore him. He's always on.

They better not kill off anyone of the big four. I'm mainly worried cause what big story could Doug and Julie have at this stage?

I'll believe it when I see it

I will say, though if there ever was a time to pull out the big guns it would be around sept when he's starting to shop Days around. Sinking Days wont make much of an appealing item.

Okay, I'm super-excited about this interview, but I do have one very HUGE question: if the vets will theoretically be used nonstop all summer long and God knows how much longer than that, won't the SAME hypothetical problem occur when they get in episode counts that surpass their contract guarantees? And then ratings would theoretically suffer again due to newbies and stories set on rerun as Hogan writes for the next promotional push period?

If Corday is to be believed, they'd potentially have a whole new, bigger budget elsewhere to look forward to. But for the reminder of their contract, I do see what you mean. And then there's the time after this "big bang" promotional period. Won't potential buyers be watching ratings afterwards, to see follow up possibly? I could be wrong, just wondering.

I'm not buying the whole "masterplan", either. Corday thought he could get away with cheap newbie overload, the ratings have chastened him and he's now frantically trying to right the ship. It's all very well wanting to time the good ratings to coincide with shopping the show around but the best predictor of future ratings is CURRENT ratings. The crappy first few months of 2007 only mean that they will have to rise from a base of 2.1-2.2 instead of a base of 2.5-2.6.

Well, I know it's silly to say this, but I think NBC is behind the show, promotion-wise. They're doing a GREAT, unexpected job with the May sweeps promo. Already it has premiered and I just FLOVE the "Trust Us" tag, literally telling viewers that Sami and Lucas WILL get married. It almost appears that EJ will definitely die too. Oh, what a shock! May really is going to kick it all off and I am TOO excited.

I agree with you. I will also believe it when I see it too.

Wasn't it TVGuide/Michael Logan that spilled the beans about everyone returning from the dead/actually alive in April of 2004?

I think so because he is the only person in the media that JER seems to talk to.

OMG!! Are you serious! My parents can watch again!

Yep. Frons wants all those little kiddies watch The OC to watch Days on SN.

Every year, there's an annual "Plan to Save Days!"

Why?

Because every year, Corday makes promises that fall flat... and by the same time rolls around next year, the show's back in the same dire straits it was in the year before. Wash, rinse, repeat. How many times is he going to keep making the same mistakes before he finally realizes what the fans want to see? Stop experimenting with idiotic sh!t and deliver the goods. He obviously knows what sells, because he pimps them like crazy with his annual "Miracle Plan," so why is it that he only seems to know this for six months of the year and then his brain turns to complete mush for the other six?

If everything he says is true, it sounds fabulous. But how many times have we been told that we would finally learn why the DiMeras hate the Bradys so much? And even with that, I'm not sure that I want the tale being told without Joe Mascolo. And by now, isn't it just a little bit anti-climactic? Nothing could possibly be fascinating enough to satisfy my curiosity after being strung along for decades. It all depends on the execution, I guess. We could learn the truth in one or two episodes, and that'll be that. This has to be a long-term uprising. The execution must be done well, or else it'll fall flat. Need proof? Look at Kayla removing John's kidney. In writing, that sounded exciting as hell. The way it was done -- the way it was executed? It nearly put me to sleep. They need to build towards these dramatic scenes, rather than just tossing them in at random in any given episode. The reward will be much greater for viewers and the ratings will show it.

I'm still bitter about Eileen Davidson. That was a opportunity for gold, completely tossed to the wayside. But I digress...

What's up with Doug and Julie getting massive airtime? I mean, that's good to hear 'n all... but they've not been around on a regular basis in a long while. How will giving them massive airtime fix anything anymore than the other 'forgotten supercouple of the past' -- Patch and Kayla?

So now, the Big 4 is John/Marlena, Bo/Hope, Steve/Kayla and Doug/Julie? Interesting. I like it. Give 'em something good, though. Don't just toss them on the screen for the sake of tossing them on the screen.

Sami carrying the DiMera baby needs to be a frontburner, exciting storyline. She's the new "Marlena" in the eyes of the DiMera obsession. Get it out of this hum-drum slump it's in and give us some shocks. I want EJ to kidnap Sami and hold her captive in a really sick, twisted way until she gives birth.

Anyway, all of this sounds very promising -- as usual. Let's see what sticks and what doesn't, though. Summer can't come fast enough for me!

If this is true, then I dont think it was the plan all along. I'd be more prone to believing that Corday wanted to move on to the next generation, saw how sucky an idea it was, and then is now spinning things around. Something to this effect. Pay now or pay later makes no difference if the show has a set life expectancy, so saving the vets up for a summer storyline seems .... odd to me, to let it get this bad this quickly just for a future storyline is lame and dumb. Anyway, I hope it is true. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

My main worry.

Someone's gonna die.

What big story could it be?

I have a hunch Frances Reid may finally decide to retire (She was very frail at Xmas) Perhaps they will have her succumb to cancer, heart attack, or alzheimers (sp) Give her one last chance to shine before she retires or worse :( Okay I don't want to think about it anymore, it's makign me sad.

Doug and Julie could be part of Alice dying or being sent to a retirement facility? Maybe they will move into the Horton House and take over as the matriarch/patriarch of the show?

The only way I would accept Frances leaving is if she decided to retire. If they do it for shock value, I'd be pissed.
