Character’s Guilt Irks Actress on ‘Children' by Jon Michael Reed
NEW YORK — There isn't a fan of “All MY children” who hasn’t become obsessed with soapdom’s most popular whodunit. Since last September, everyone’s been dying to know who killed Eddie Dorrance. Even members of the “AMC” cast had a stake in finding out who the culprit was, since the guilty party would necessarily have to be X'd out of the script — and a job. To maintain the suspense, headwriter Agnes Nixon didn’t reveal the killer even to her cast. The half dozen suspects were totally in the dark about the story outcome. Last week they found out and the culprit was fit to be tied.
SUSAN PLANTT-WINSTON, who plays Claudette Montgomery, overheard stagehands discussing the technical problems of an upcoming car crash sequence that involved her. Sensing the worst, Susan demanded to know the truth from her producer, who explained that management had stalled telling her she was being written off the show. Producers, you see, are anxious not to have uncooperative actors on their hands. Susan pointed out that she should have been given ample warning so she could plan her next career move. Then she retaliated by showing up late for the following day’s taping.
SUSAN, A FORMER Miss Hollywood and Las Vegas showgirl shouldn’t have a problem landing another soap role. But her sudden axing still “smarts,” even though “AMC’ fans can now rest assured that the falsely accused murderess, Kelly Cole, won’t have to go to the electric chair.
*And I don't believe Susan ever worked in soaps again.
