I can't see Frons being able to out of Soapnet's contract with Sony. I don't think the person above him will tolerate him alienating Sony like that by getting rid of Days and Y&R.

Plus, if he acquires something else, I think Sonography and One day with ......will go next.

Because Brian Frons worked at NBCD during SB's glory days and considered it his baby. It's a well known fact that Frons loved SB and the people who worked on it. Hell, 2 of the 3 current ABCD exec producers (Julie Hanan Carruthers and Jill Farren Phelps) he met while working with them on Santa Barbara. I don't blame Frons on this one. This goes higher than him IMO (Re: Disney Executives, who don't know the first thing about daytime)

That's so baseless though. Both The OC and One Tree Hill are extremely low-rated shows, hence why they were cancelled. Thing is they were cancelled.............yesterday! There's absolutely no demand for either show so what makes them think this is going to bring Soapnet viewers is beyond me.

Yes having AW is nice and it was gracious of them to give it back to us. But AW doesn't have nearly the cult following or demand that SB has built up in the past 14 years. People who didn't watch the first time around would kill to see it again- and those that did watch the first time around are salivating at the opportunity to do it all over again. When will they LISTEN damnit!

WE WANT SANTA BARBARA ON SOAPNET IN 2007!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to mention SB wasn't a low-rated show by today's standards. During their creative zenith (85-89), they pulled in anywhere from 3.5 to 5 million viewers, staying in the 4s & 5s during 87, 88, and some of 89. One Tree Hill & The OC averaged about 3 million viewers apiece this past season. Doesn't wash with me.

As far as I know One Tree Hill hasn't been cancelled (yet.)

I remember the press release when Another World got picked up by SoapNet. I was stunned the amount they paid was so high. But I don't remember the figure.

I don't think there's a chance SoapNet would want to dump either Sony soap. I believe they're bringing in the viewers.

SB had a lot of horrendous years after they removed the Dobsons and before they brought them back to fix the mess. No it wasn't as stinky as the past few years of GH but it was duller than dull much of that time and truly awful for a lot of it. Precious little of that middle time, which was a lot of years, is worth viewing. The beginning and a few other years of the run were excellent.

But it was very low rated then. That's why the low ratings for the soaps today are upsetting the networks enough to be thinking of getting out of the soap business completely. Everything's a fraction of what they used to be which isn't worth it for the most part for them to keep things going this way.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if ABC doesn't have some exit strategy planned for SoapNet too, to transform it into another kind of cable channel eventually.

This is a good move for SOAPnet, but very disappointing considering both shows are available on DVD and we want classic soaps. Still, Dallas has been running for years and could be removed for a daytime soap, plus they could cut 90210 down to one episode a day.

I just hope this does well so they get more money to add a daytime soap. Then again, who knows? Maybe they'll get Ugly Betty and more current soaps.

Sorry, I have to defend Frons on this one. This might actually be a smart move. I guess the average SoapNET Viewer is 30+ and therefore those two shows with a rather enthusiast teenage following might allow SoapNET to get a new layer of audience which could get interested in the other programs of the cabler...

Of course past DAYTIME soaps would be well-received by us long-time fans but business-wise this seems to be good deal for SoapNET.

I was thinking the same thing, but you know they'll just continue to re-run the series after it ends, like they do with the other shows.

OTH is in it's fourth year, with an avg of 22 eppys a year, so that's 88 eppys there and more or less the same for the OC, so they'll get a *good* 4/5 months for each *cycle*

and ETA: I would be shocked it the CW didn't pick up OTH for it's fifth season. The show has brought in some strong numbers in the last two seasons. I'm actually kinda glad that this show was picked up, I watched the first season and really liked it, just had way too much to do to ever continue and don't have the $ for the dvds. I always thought it was uber better than the OC.

and btw, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the new banner....I miss Jax, and want him back soon~!

    • Didn't Carrie2 even seduce a minor? Ick. Wait. Josh had an affair with Vanessa? Or she just thought he did? I know people always say "it's just a soap" but the way mental illness is portrayed on soaps (and that goes for pretty much all of them) has always been not great, especially PPD. They practically turned Claire into The Joker. She also was trying to seduce men. (I notice that now Mary Ryan Munisteri is listed as co HW with Ryder in the 1986 episodes, Claire has calmed down a lot. Never thought her GL career was very good but seems like she tried to course correct that a bit).
    • sss Ms. Tunie is a goddess. I feel all the anger, pride, sadness, arrogance, dignity, fear, love, and other emotions in everything she does as Anita.
    • You're right. People like me who stuck with her, did so because of her history. The show just skated her along with no story,  no goal, no aim. Right again! This is who I forgot before. When you describe her, it makes me appreciate her more. Thinking back I loved Mandy.
    • Maybe Guza is becoming Y&R Head writer and Jilly will be named EP! Remember CBS installed Latham as consultant and later Mal Young, both of whom took over the show. Of course, they each got credit during the consulting days.
    • Don't forget Carrie, who as Carrie2 was screwing everything in pants, and PPD Reva, who to either get back at Josh for his supposed affair with Vanessa (or just to prove she's more desirable than Van) tries to screw half the male population.
    • Post-production isn't exactly akin to sweeping the floors, but it makes more sense given her CV.  And, it would invalidate any concerns that she has an undo influence on the creative process, as opposed to visual and sound design of the show.  In fact, given her interests, it makes sense that she would want to consult and see the impact of newer technology in a post-production facility.  I could only imagine how much has changed in sound technology since she worked on SB, and that might be intriguing to utilize. As well as their impending move (not as soon as B&B, but we all know it will happen) and helping set up post-production at the new facility.
    • The last five or so episodes of season 8 after the Jean Hackney story ended were pretty strong with the Laura/Val friendship breakdown, Ben's PTSD with Val trying to help him, and the start of Jill realizing that Val was as much of a threat to her happiness with Gary as Abby was. I always thought that the Jean Hackney story should have ended at mid season at the latest... and then deal with the fall-out because seeing Ben/Val switch roles with Ben in mental decline instead of Val would have been interesting to explore.  And seeing Val and Laura's friendship suffer also was interesting and should have been explored especially with Karen caught in the middle and Abby both intrigued and amused at the conflict that she didn't cause. However, season 8 was the only Latham run season where Val was well written.
    • Well, she's not in there sweeping the floors at the end of the night, and you don't bring in an award-winning producer to just sit on their backsides (or hey, maybe you do!). Again, without knowing the specific capacity she's in there working as⏤and it seems as if we are not going to at the present time⏤it's hard to speculate/discuss. I would interpret she's in a role that either would not require being credited, or she's, as others have speculated, is back and not receiving credit for the work she's done. That'd be like saying, per the WGA, all writers must be credited, but as we've seen by those who've worked as fi-core, they don't always receive credit.

And, if my research is correct, per the DGA, you can request not to be credited for work you do. I could only assume the same would be for the PGA, as well.
    • When Anita read Barbara's letter, it started out with the viewers hearing it in Barbara's voice as Anita read silently. And then Anita saying the next portion aloud while Barbara's voice continued simultaneously. And then ending with Anita alone saying the last part aloud. Excerpt from interview  (link to full interview) The rest may be spoilerish -- Only the nonspoiler part here: I love the idea of reading that letter,” shares Tunie. “And at one point in the script, I think it said that my voice joined her, and [Anita] started reciting the letter from memory because [she] memorized this letter. I suggested to Steve Williford, our director, ‘What if it’s like that moment in Hamilton when Hamilton is writing the resignation letter to George Washington, and then he starts saying it too, and then Hamilton’s voice fades away, and then it’s all George. What if we do something like that?’ And he was like, ‘Oh, my God! I just got chills. Let’s do it!’ So, we did it.” I understood that it worked really well, so I’m really happy about that.”
    • I think MVJ and Guza made a good team in the launching of the soap, and I'm hoping that the rotation of all stories and characters is maintained once he officially departs from the credits. And so far, Ron C's breakdowns have been decent... but they pop only when he's paired with a good script writer like Jazmin.   I hope once Guza leaves officially... that MVJ is able to reign in Ron C and the dread Jamey G.
