DAYS would be in the Top 2 with Y&R for me.

Also does anyone really care what Max has to say about DAYS? He is allowed to have an opinion and although it is an unpopular one, there is no point in trying to argue with him about things he has made pretty clear in the past.

As someone else said, Different strokes....not everyone is going to love DAYS since JER left!

It depends on what the definition of "good soap" is nowadays. If it's all about the drama, GH takes the top spot, with Y&R and GL behind them, followed by AMC and Days (haven't watched the rest enough to judge). If we're judging 'good soap' in the traditional 'family' sense, Days and GL are tops, with the rest trailing behind.

Not surprisingly, those soaps are getting the most buzz these days on the boards. But none of them are perfect. GH is slapping viewers in the face with an upcoming death. Y&R is slapping Sheila fans and Sheila haters in the face by raping the character and tossing her in an assinine story for Y&R's standards, not to mention writing out Ashley Abbott. On GL, while the Tammy death story is gut-wrenching, it's caused many Tammy/Jonathan fans to tune out because they feel slapped in the face (or so I've read). AMC killed Dixie... need I say more? And Days has backburnered Bo/Hope, while tossing John and Marlena in a lame "dream visit" storyline -- two decisions that have some fans peeved.

In the end, these five shows have taken the biggest risks lately (in different ways). Whether we're watching because of great storytelling or watching because it's like a trainwreck (you can't help but look), we're watching. In the end, we'll see which pay off and which do more damage than good.

Meanwhile, can anyone tell me if the murder mystery on OLTL is interesting? Or is it just your standard soap murder mystery? It looks interesting, so I might tune in if it's worth it.

LOL. When Max disses PSNS no one seems to care, but when he disses DAYS many get upset.

Honestly, if we're basing it on quality then the ratings seem perfectly fine to me the way they are. However, I'll admit that GL/GH/DAYS may be a bit higher.

And why the heck should Y&R be pulling 5's or 6's? Please. I thought we were basing this on quality.

Well I'm no one to come to Y&R's defense, the show has been hit or miss with me in the writing department. Alot in the miss. However, Y&R continues to wow me with it's production. Music and direction are still top notch with me. When I did my ratings it wasn't only writing but production played a part also.

True, the production and acting has always been top notch. However, with the slew of newbies, it's going to be hard to keep that up. I'm hating what this show has become. I wish LML will admit defeat and step down, since the higher ups seem to adore her.

Dru, I am about to just give up on preaching about the newbie situation. It seems like every show is filled or dominated with characters or performers who have been with their shows less than a year or 2 years.

ATWT doesn't bring back former performers anymore. They just recast. So many of the characters are old ones but they all have new faces.

GL is about the same way. When I first started back watching full time, it took me forever to figure out who some of them were.

Days despite what some people think has a lot of new faces in town whether they be new characters or recasts. Add to that so many that are gone.

Add Y&R to that.

B&B keeps alot of the same but now they are bringing on a lot of people lately.

AMC just keeps getting rid of the familiar and focusing on the same damn performers or newbies.

It is just an epidemic right now.

When I did my scores I tried basing it on the stories, the balance of the show, the production values, and how often the show keeps my attention.

Y&R still exceeds in all those for me. Even though it had some weak stories.

GH follows a close 2nd with GL in 3rd. They are the only show since November that I can honestly say has kept my attention every day. And that is what moved them up higher.

GL would be so much higher if it weren't for so many new faces but with them it is understandable as they have the lowest budget.

ATWT even though it has been off some lately still gets 4th for me. They would have definitely been higher if their balance was better. The last week or so has pulled them up. If the poll had come a few weeks ago I may have put them in dead last. They definitely would not have been in the top 5.

Days would have been higher as far as quality but they only manage 5th for me. Even though the special affects are somewhat being lessened they are still there and pull the quality of the show down. January has been so boring for the last 2 weeks which pulls it down. Balance has been wayyyyyyyyyy off in January which hurt it.

Unless you watch all nine soaps on a daily basis you can't really say what it deserves or doesn't deserve. You can't base opinions on what happened in the past when you watched. What are you basing your opinions on what you heard.

    • "And OMG, watching the scenes of Roger's return in comparison...the quality in the writing really nosedived. The stupid mask." Very much agreed.  Having Roger hide behind a mask for weeks/months, with it culminating with him swinging in on a vine at Blake/Phillip's wedding....geez.  So juvenile. IMO, Guiding Light never did a good job reintroducing major characters, either from the dead or elsewhere.  Masked balls = awful.  Amish = awful. When Reva was brought back from the dead, she should've just showed up in Springfield as Reva, and informed everyone that she had been gone for years because she felt like it.  She had a four-year fling with some dude who ended up dumping her due to disloyalty. Josh would be pissed and declare that their love is not *always* but *sometimes* and he'd act accordingly.  Her kids would hate her.
    • Agreed. The Emmys next year are gonna be a pretty tough competition and I hope we get a Days sweep lol  Not only does Deidre deserve a nomination for these last few weeks, but I also think Paul Telfer, Raven Bowens, Carson Boatman, Dan Feuerriegel and Alison Sweeney have good chances as well.
    • It’s not about a lack of faith and trust in MVJ, it’s about a a lack of faith and trust in Ron Carlivati, who I think can be very sneaky and manipulative when he wants to be.  And, all that “He’s just a breakdown writer” talk never changed my mind about anything, because at Days, it was “just a breakdown writer” that gave us some of the worst episodes I’ve ever seen.

    • I think they’re desperately trying to cover his awful tattoos. But anyway them being unable to style short kings properly has been a major pet peeve of mine for a while now.  I honestly don’t understand what some people expect from actors to even begin considering them for recognition. Let’s be real—awards mostly mean that an actor is respected by their peers and has some level of cultural relevance. Actual judgment on the acting itself? That’s often secondary—highly subjective and shaped by the times. I completely agree on both points. If you’re an actor or a dancer you shouldn’t get any tattoos (sorry not sorry). Tomas’ tattoos are ugly too. And regarding the couples- you’re completely right. These writers are unable to write romance.   Further comments: - Kat cannot be this dumb to keep tampering with evidence over and over again. And I’m officially not a fan of the actress—every time she’s in a scene with Leslie, she doesn’t seem intimidated at all. She plays it like comic relief, which is just too much, especially when paired with Leslie’s histrionics and over-the-top antics. Leslie is older, dangerous, and has literally been portrayed as homicidal—Kat should be at least a little scared. • I also didn’t like Kat playing damsel in distress with the hotel manager. It gave off the same weird energy as Dani with the cop. I would’ve much preferred the version Paul Raven suggested, with her sneaking in through housekeeping. • And yes, Dani again accused Hayley of faking the pregnancy—this time even specifying she might be using a pillow under her shirt. (No fake miscarriage being mentioned) I stand by my take: this is ridiculous writing. No one in the real world—except us, the chronically online soap watchers—would even think of such a conspiracy theory. Haley is no Beyoncé. • What in the world was Chelsea wearing in her hair the other day? And this whole thing with Madison is beyond cringe. Chelsea’s coming off as needy and toxic—basically like every other Dupree. • I’m glad the casino storyline is moving forward, but it’s still boring as hell. Honestly, I’d be so here for a plot twist where Vanessa and Doug take Joey out. • The direction and editing lately have been rough. Abrupt cuts, weird pacing… something just feels off overall. There’s a strange uneasiness to how it’s all coming together. • And finally: Tomas is too much of a saint. Where are the messy sluts when you need them? (Vanessa doesn’t count.)
