B&B: Old/Classic Discussion & Articles
Spring 2001 was soooooo wild and over the top - and amazing. The Morgan DeWitt story started off very boring, but turned into quite the gem. With Clarke and the python, Morgan falling over the balcony, the Steffy is eaten by a shark "twist", Dr. Tim Reid in LA and of course the climax with Ridge driving into the living room of her house.

As AmySilence’s uploads get really close to the start of season 3 of B&B, I find it fascinating how much house-cleaning has been going on, yet most characters got a proper send-off. Interestingly enough, THREE further additional original cast members (Storm, Katie and Rocco) are gone by March 1989 – leaving Brooke and Donna as the only middle-class Logan-universe relicts. Previously, the show dropped Dave, Mark, Beth and Stephen. Nick Preston who had a pretty timely Pretty Woman-type of storyline and could have easily stayed in Donna’s orbit, is gone as well. Even though Bill Bell killed Donna’s storyline completely, yet he chose her as the only to stay... Judging the acting chops, it was the right decision but it is still puzzling. BTW: Rocco is the only of the four departing characters not getting an exit explanation and will be gone the longest. Exactly 20 (!) years later he will suddenly pop up as an extra at Forrester Creations again. Katie and Storm will return for more or less frequent guest visits, in the case of Storm from 1990-1991 with a new face. It is kinda sad because Ethan Wayne had mostly mediocre material, but he an Lauren Koslow (Margo) clicked even though he was just serving as her attorney. On the behind the scenes front, Frederick Johnson joined the show as a writer in March 1989. He would quickly shift to Y&R and later work for maaaaaaaany different shows and have another stint at B&B in 2006 and I wasn’t aware previously aware that he got his start writing for the Forresters. I’m now curious when James E. Reilly will pop up in the credits and if it will correspond with certain storylines. Thoughts of those watching those classic episodes right now?

Stephanie to Brooke: "You can't even shoot straight!" 2005 was an AMAZING year for B&B. The storylines Patrick Mulcahey pitched for Stephanie were very much over the top, but made for great moments and fabulous acting for Susan Flannery. Let me remember: Taylor came back as a wax mummy, Stephanie faked her heart attack, Kay Chancellor came to LA and changed the course for FC forever (or at least till the next rewrite in 6 months LOL!) and I'm sure there was more in that year... It was all soooo good. The begging of 2005 was probably terrible as it surely was Jack Wagner & Ashley Jones as a wannabe super couple Nick&Bridget 24/7.

While this is true in the context that there were B and C storyline going on, what struck the most watching those 1988 episodes uploaded by Amy Silence: Ronn Moss was in nearly every single episode. The often touted balance of the Bill Bell years was none as to distribution of appearances is concerned. Ridge was on-screen for more than 200 (!!!!) episodes in 1988, he was also wayyyyyy ahead of everyone else in 1987 and it seems the same happened in 1989. This is something I always thought started in the late 90s/early 2000s when daytime execs tried to save the sinking ship with that focus group wisdom and favoritism of certain actors. Apparently not.

Y&R: Old Articles
Wow - that’s a lot of episodes. Just the screenshots look Already great with Dina, Kay, Chris, Lauren, Neil&Dru. Cant wait to watch these. After your continuing labor of love to make these treasures available for the public, I think I will finally have to make time to watch ALL of them. Seems like you have now collected a good third of Y&R of the years 1990-1993. 🙂

I actually think the current is not too bad, yet I prefer the older tunes as well. Admittedly every 5 years they have slightly changed the tunes and phased out old music which is used just occasionally onwards. It is still happening today and unlike Y&R, thankfully B&B still seems to own the rights to the wonderful music from Jeff Allocco and David Kurtz. Susan Flannery was amazing as Leslie Stewart on DALLAS: I have no idea why they didn't use her beyond that 1st (?) season. She worked so well with Larry Hagman. La Flannery was quite the minx in 1970s. Her role on "The Moneychangers" (I saw the mini-series just last year on DVD for the first time) was also quite sultry, but also a very sharp attorney. Then after DALLAS it seems like she took a prolonged maternity leave which basically killed her career (or she did not want to work at that time???) - until Bill Bell hired her for B&B.

Queen Stephanie was indeed written marvellous in the early years. And Susan Flannery looked DA BOMB. Interesting enought around Xmas 1988 I noticed that her dresses got a slightly wider, they started Dressing her more casual with sweaters on occasion - up until Susan Flannery was super slim and always dressed to the nines. While I agree with you that Ridge, Caroline and Brooke all had en edge and written very well, the love triangle was not much better than we get to see nowadays with Liam, Steffy and Hope or at least it was also feautured too much and too often in stand alone episodes were everyone's main concern in all over L.A. is with whom Ridge is shagging up. And until the arrival of Clarke (boost #1) and later the Spectras (Major boost #2) the B and C stories were much too weak. Speaking of which: Episode 463 and Episode 467 proved to me what an amazing Addition Darlene Conley was to the show. These two episodes are stand-Outs; Sally was soooo bold and suddenly B&B feels very much alive.

What Are You Watching/Binging/Streaming Now?
The show is indeed fabulous. And surprisingly enough it has a great final season and amazing climax. Watch it! Season 4 was a rather mixed bag, but you can sit thorugh that - it had some good moments.

How cool - thank you! Like YRfan23 I also have my personal B&B database and just from recaps and storylines in the episodes, I already had Dec 26, 1988 as a preemption date. Perfect to get verification for this. The only information still missing for 1988 is about January 1988: there had to be at least one (if there non for New Years Eve, then even two...) pre-emption (presumably in the last week?) for B&B... Case in point: my first episode of 1988 is # 189 which - I assume - aired on Monday January 4, 1988. Thoughts?

There is absolute no resolution to the mysterious caller and it is not untill the 200 episode mark that Stephanie is regularly leaving on her mysterious errands which eventually turn out to be her visits to Angela. This is great build-up... And I agree with you that the 1987 episodes are a mixed bag and everything surrounding Katie and the other Logan is forgetful by today's standards, yet it is the beginning of a legacy.

They truly were. They gave us spectacular location shoots in the 1990s! Although I must admit that I was surprised that the look of B&B improved drastically during Dennis Steinmetz rather short producing stint and got some prime tim-ish style elements. I always though John C Zak introduced the glam factor.

#455 was just uploaded and there's a major behind the scenes shake-up: Meg Bennett is no longer writing, Dennis L. Steinmetz is no longer a producer, Brad Bell (starts taking producing duties) joins Ron Weaver as an associate producer, while Hope Harmel Smith (formerly an associate producer) is upgraded and John C. Zak who had directed a few episodes in early 1988 (and will continue with the show for the next ten years as director and producer...) is "in" as well under the title of coordinating producer.

FYI: The years listed with those YouTube videos are off because the closing credits are no longer the original ones in all cases. And “AmySilence” solely relied on this credits for her labeling of the episodes... I find it fascinating that unlike internet clamor that Sallys role got eventually expanded, it is clear that Bill Bell knew of Darlene Conley’a talent from Y&R and built the Spectra clan from scratch right at the brink of 1988/1989. No turning back, he was already in the process of phasing our Katie, Storm and Rocco (plus Nick) to make room. Those uploads from AmySilence are a totally unexpected gift that keeps on giving! Just 50 more episodes and she will close the gap to the uploads by “MarekLogan” with those annoying Polish voiceovers that are on YT with almost consecutive episodes (including some gaps) of 1989-1992 B&B.

I noticed that, too. It was very smooth sailing. Scripts were also not too bad. The problems after the strike were much more glaring with several botched up episodes and sudden story switches for 2 weeks before it was back to normal. i have no idea who wrote B&B and Y&R for that matter. Maybe the likes of Rex M. Best or Eric Freiwald for Y&R and producer/director Dennis Steinmetz for B&B with help from some other script writers from the Bell universe?
