Knots Landing
I went down a random Love Boat rabbit hole and skimmed through the ’78 2-part Season 2 premiere, guest-starring our beloved Donna Mills! https://youtu.be/c8nIPQ1WxgY https://youtu.be/jdtbu3DFRuM Donna has described how she spent the entirety of the 70s stuck in “damsel-in-distress” role and this is a perfect example. I won’t spoil the plot except to say that she falls in love with a handsome stranger, played by David Birney (eeek, this is the actor later revealed to be abusing his wife Meredith Baxter Birney). Donna's character and story is very serious and woe-is-me. The whole time I’m watching this, I’m seeing her intelligence and talent shining through, and I’m thinking, she deserves much better than this. I can only imagine how landing the role of Abby must have been salvation for Donna!

We love your detailed observations, Vee! Definitely not spam in my book. It's been a good number of years since I viewed all the seasons, so you're bringing back a flood of great memories. I'm pretty sure James Westmont is never seen or heard of again. That is strange, as Abby seemed to thrive on his business support and acumen. Wendel Meldrum is forever beloved as Kevin's teacher on The Wonder Years (though that's all tainted now, after the Fred Savage revelations... ugh). I just googled her and she was also the Seinfeld "Low-Talker"... love it! She passed away last year 😕 RIP I'm curious for your take mid-season on Joshua... my recollection is that his "turn to the dark side" is very abrupt... not that well-developed... before they go full barrel with Dark Joshua. One thing to keep in mind as the season progresses is that the writers had to do a major shift. The original plan was for Verna Ellers to remain away from home for longer. But... I remember in SOD, a KL producer was asked "do you ever take fan feedback into account when crafting stories?" and the answer was something like "yes. We ended the Verna Ellers story sooner than intended, because we got so much negative feedback". And then the season was expanded from the previous 25 to the super-sized 30 eps for the first time! So the show had 5 extra eps of story to create, and Val home sooner than expected. Maybe that's why they had to accelerate Joshua's story.

It could be a like button but no dislike button. That would keep the vibes positive. I’d be sooo excited to have a like button. Often times I want to agree with, support or thank someone for a post, but it doesn’t feel worthy of a reply post for me to simply say “I agree” or “thanks”. A like button is a simpler cleaner way to express appreciation for a post.

Now I’m experimenting with downloading from the Vault on different devices and I’m running into some issues. MacBook, using Safari browser - download with no problem New iPad Air 5th gen - unable to download with either Safari or Chrome. On both, it starts to download but gets stuck at “zero percent download”. Any thoughts @ChickenNuggetz92 ?

Poor Andrea Evans... having to sit through that loooong song... gazing into Danny's eyes, and then looking down, and then back up again... and repeat 🤣 That song "Never gonna let you go" is another Sergio Mendes song, just like "Alibis" - maybe Sergio is a YR fan There's clipped Vault scenes from perhaps the following ep, when a dejected Traci informed Danny that she is actually not getting back with Tim. Ouch that had to be a tough thing for Danny to tell Patty. I was annoyed with Nikki for not honoring Cora's wish to be moved to a hospital... but I have to remember that Nikki is still pretty immature at this point despite being a newly-married glamorous socialite.

Kinda felt that way…. Matt was a bad boy when he debuted, right around when TL quit in summer ‘85. But then TL agreed to come back a couple months later, making Matt redundant. Matt morphed into a generic Dudley do right and around summer ‘86, after Jack went to jail and broke up with Nikki, the show half-heartedly added Matt back into the quad, but that soon faded. I’m really surprised Matt lasted as long as Sept ‘87

Thanks, love these details! Dorothy Lyman was also recurring at the time on "Life Goes On" as Chad Lowe's mom, so maybe she wasn't available enough for BnB. Interesting in '96 that Bridget is on contract but her older brother Rick isn't.

@Broderick - I keep meaning to ask you, with your amazing encyclopedic memory of the vintage years - what's your take on the 1980 cult story? On one hand - of course I want to see it. On the other hand... it just sounds kind of lurid (i.e. - Peggy Brooks is swarmed by rats!!) And the character of cult leader Sumiko reads on paper like an awful Dragon Lady stereotype.

Agreed… TEB sounds better on Alibis than MD! I wonder if TEB ever took singing lessons after the show insisted she sing… So there’s so many reasons why Traci might have been crying… - She’s in love with Danny and is jealous that Lauren is sharing this special experience with him - She’s professionally jealous of Lauren as Traci also wants to be a singer but feels she doesn’t measure up - She’s traumatized that Lauren just basically admitted to trying to manipulate Traci’s relationships, for unknown reasons - She’s still in love with Tim, and the lyrics to Alibis are flashing her back to when she walked in on Tim sleeping with another woman This is the type of layered writing from Bill Bell that I love and makes YR so special!

Question - why do you think Traci is crying as she watches Danny and Lauren's performance? (and no, I don't mean b/c their singing makes Traci's ears hurt 🤣) At first the answer seems simple, but the more I thought about it (while I was out exercising, my favorite time to ponder YR 😄), the answer seems more complex...

Yep… Ashley and Eric were engaged but she was destroyed to find out that Eric had previously been the lover of her mother Dina. She escaped to Paris and met Marc, who she developed feelings for. She returned to GC, reconciled with Eric, but was shocked to find Marc had followed her to GC. She almost married Eric but fled the church the day of the wedding (I guess because she had conflicting feelings for Marc?) This then led to a full-blown “triangle” but as you said, neither the Eric or Marc actors were a match for ED, so it was doomed to fail.

What a glorious episode! It wasn’t even that eventful but it definitely kept my attention. The show was firing on all cylinders at this point. Jack was in full scoundrel playboy mode… making kissing motions towards Diane as he walked past Andy… thumbing through his black book before Lindsey walks in… this is why Jack was the character viewers “love to hate”. I’m frustrated by Diane’s indecision and was shocked at first when she was mad at Andy instead of being contrite. But their exchange had a true-life ring to it… I’m sure many viewers had found themselves in a similar situation. Overall, I really don’t like that this leads to Alex D being let go in a few short weeks, and Diane’s story ending on a very weak note. I really appreciated the dialogue writing in this ep… Lauren K really sparkled in her scenes with Jack – verbally jousting with him… flirting and blackmailing at the same time And I adored Danny and Traci’s talk with Mamie! When Mamie complimented Danny’s singing, he said “Thank you” and she said “you’re welcome” and I just so appreciate that it sounds like an actual normal real-life conversation ❤ certainly a lost art on soap operas. I also loved Traci and Mamie’s palpable familial bond. It reminds me that the ’91 scenes with Traci and Veronica Redd Forest’s Mamie rang totally false, with no feeling of true familial bond to me. I feel like maybe I did see the original airing of this ep (as a 12-year-old), because the Danny Lauren performance felt familiar… I remember thinking how sexy and glamorous they looked, and how removed and sad Traci must have felt… that Traci felt it was unattainable for her to ever be in Lauren’s place. Watching it now, I’m thinking – yikes, Danny and Lauren sounds terrible! Individually, they sound ok, but their harmony is non-existent. I blame Michael D because his harmony with Beth M also sounds awful. But wow… “Alibis” by Sergio Mendes! Talk about a forgotten ‘80s hit. I had to pull up the original on Youtube… sounds great but I don’t think I’ve heard it in almost 40 years. Looks like it only hit #29 on the chart. Surprising, but then 1984 was a huge year for pop music! Madonna, Van Halen, Prince, Tina Turner, etc. etc. no wonder Sergio Mendes didn’t rise to the top. Why did the camera keep cutting to the local “City Scene” tv host? Maybe IRL he’s a local celebrity or something? He did make me lol the way he was bopping his head… I love playful touches such as the camera lingering on Marc’s bare legs. These small efforts really elevates scenes in way that soaps don’t have the time to do any more. Jill and Marc were fun, though I’m starting to see some signs that BrendaD is losing track of her grounded manner of acting, and is leaning towards campy… it feels more like Jill is flirting *at* Marc, talking past him, than truly trying to flirt with him. Anyway, seems like their affair, once over, was never discovered and never referenced again. The one bust in this episode is the character of Eric. Such a slick “Ken doll”… why is Ashley wasting her time with him? I feel like Ashley would be drawn to someone with more depth and complexity… hmm like Victor! I watched all the commercials and it brought back a lot of great nostalgia… like the “Hanes #12 inspector”, “Sizzlean”, and especially Robert S Woods (One Life to Live!) giving tips on how to “never let ‘em see you sweat!” ❤
