I always thought that it was so ironic about the whole Hubbard/Marland thing. What an incredible actress she is to have made two completely different characters and completely own them. I REALLY want to see her other Emmy-winning project - the First Ladies Diaries special where she played Mrs. Edith Wilson (and Gerald Gordon's Emmy-winning turn in the Rachel Jackson installment of FLD, as President Andrew Jackson - David O'Brien was in that one, too!!).

Yup. I thought that with his popularity throughout his 15-year run on the show that he'd be a hot commodity once TD ceased production at the end of 1982. His gig on AW didn't come until 1987, I believe. I guess I'm just surprised that none of the other soaps - either in LA or especially NYC - snapped him up right away.

Yes - that's where they belong, and I figured that's where you would put them. Thanks again, I really appreciate it. I'm surprised that Jim Pritchett and Lydia Bruce never landed long-term roles on other soaps after TD, but it seems that they preferred the stage. Gerald Gordon, after leaving GH for the second time in 1983, didn't grace daytime again until the summer of 1994 when he had that short-term role as Adam Chandler's lawyer on AMC. It seems that Liz was the only one who wanted to continue long-term on soaps, and it's too bad that out of 9 nominations she never won at least once for Lucinda to go with her Emmy as Althea. What do you all think about where David O'Brien's career might have gone had he not passed away in 1989? Do you think he would have gained another daytime role or maybe just primarily stuck with the stage like Jim Pritchett did?

Thanks for sharing that article...and yes, if you ever do come across Liz's return interview from that 1981 SOD, that would be wonderful. If you have any Liz interviews/articles from her ATWT era, would you please post them on that board? Thanks. Dan, Pam Toll married her first husband in December 1967 and was still wed to him at this point (June 1969), so my first guess would be the show temped for her due to illness. But we have no way of knowing until Pam appears again how long Maureen Mooney temped for her.

I've never even heard of Mary Grover, but that might say more about me than her.

Marta Heflin makes her debut as Shana in today's first episode. Meanwhile, Maureen Mooney temps for Pam Toll as Liz Wilson. (Of course, MM would appear years later in a Brim Coffee commercial with Liz Hubbard.) Carl, would you happen to have Liz Hubbard's "return" interview from 1981? It was in the SOD issue dated May 12, 1981, and Denise Alexander and Chris Robinson of GH were on the cover. If you do have it, would you please post it here? Thanks.

RFlow, did you also like the character of Shana? Susan Keith is an absolute doll - I treasure the autographed picture I have of her and the lovely handwritten note she sent along with it.

ALL: Temporary Replacements
It's so funny that I just wrote that last entry a few days ago - Maureen Mooney (later best known for her run as Ann on GL from 1975-79) temped for Pam Toll as Liz Wilson in one of the Retro TV reruns shown today (from June 1969).

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
Carl (or anyone), would you be able to post any Liz Hubbard features from her time on ATWT? I have the first part of an interview from the 6/20/1995 SOD, but not the rest. Then there was the big article about Lucinda's return in the 8/17/1999 issue (which I used to have but accidentally wound up with the recycling out on the curb one day long ago). Anything from the 80s and 90s would especially be appreciated. I do have the interview SOD did with her in the 6/15/2010 issue. Thanks in advance!!!

Marta Heflin was in the end credits of today's second episode, and she will be a pivotal character in the doomed "romance" of Mike Powers and Nancy Bennett. Marta was the niece of movie star Van Heflin and AMC's Mona Kane, Frances Heflin. Sadly, she's another TD cast member no longer with us - she passed in 2013 at age 68. In any case, I'm looking forward to her entrance - to be followed by actor James Shannon - because they will be the much needed spoilers in this story. It will bring Mike "22 Going on 12" Powers down a few notches, which will be a mighty good thing.

Carl, I have never been able to figure out why Sherry never recorded an album. She recorded one song on John Gabriel's (RH) album from the late 70s entitled John Gabriel & Friends, which featured several other soap stars like Michael Storm. The song she sang was the song "Steve" had written for "Liza", "You Can Love Again". I do believe that album is still up for grabs on eBay.

Unsung
Dramatist, Syreeta was Stevie Wonder's first wife (and they stayed the best of friends years after the divorce - until she passed in 2004) and co-wrote some of his songs from the early 70s including "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" and "If You Really Love Me" (and she's the female voice on the latter song). Syreeta also sang "With You I'm Born Again" with Billy Preston, which was a major smash in 1979-80 - and Billy Preston has already been profiled by Unsung. She can also be heard on the soundtrack for The Jacksons: An American Dream - singing "Stay With Love" with Jermaine Jackson. Syreeta also sang Stevie's "Harmour Love" which enjoyed renewed popularity a few years ago when featured in the movie Junebug. So she's the perfect candidate for an episode on the show. I would also love to see them profile Hot Chocolate and The Brothers Johnson.

The Melisande story ran about 8 weeks (from about mid-December 1968 to mid-February 1969) but it dragged on for what seemed like forever. This is with two episodes a day with the reruns, which cut it in half for us - it would have been a lot worse when the episodes originally aired and there was only one episode a day. LOL Ralph Purdum really did do a phenomenal job playing a very sick and disturbed man - and even after this story wraps, the good folks of Hope Memorial haven't seen the last of him. That's about all I'll say because that encounter will lead into the major story we're seeing now.

Unsung
So far, my favorite of this young season is Otis Redding. His widow was so sweet - she never had the desire to remarry. It's kind of chilling that his last performance was in Cleveland, my hometown. The plane flew out of Cleveland and never made it to its planned destination. I'm still waiting for a profile of Syreeta Wright. I wonder if they will EVER get to doing an episode about her. Stevie participated in the Deniece Williams episode, so I see no reason why he wouldn't do the same for an episode of Syreeta. Same goes for Smokey Robinson, who recorded a couple of duets with her (the most famous being "First Time on a Ferris Wheel" from The Last Dragon) and has been interviewed for other episodes of the show. Is there anyone you would like to see profiled that hasn't been yet?

ALL: Temporary Replacements
"Artificial Sweetness" - that's too funny...and clever!! Speaking of MBE, wasn't one of her pregnancies written into the show (Kayla having Stephanie)? With the exception of the character of Maggie, I haven't seen any other major character on the reruns of The Doctors have a temp recast as yet (someone did step in as Liz when Pam Toll was filming a movie, but that was before December 1967 which is where Retro TV started airing). If an actor has to be off for some reason, usually the character is sent out of town.

ALL: Soap Stars - Where are they now?
Kim Lankford (Ginger, KL) was interviewed on Dateline last night. They were doing a special about Robert Durst, and Kim was friends with his alleged murder victim Susan Berman. Kim herself was rumored to have once dated Durst. She wasn't mentioned as an actress, just a friend of Susan Berman's. They showed a clip of Kim with her horses, and with that red hair and smile I would have recognized her even before they said her name.
