Guiding Light Discussion Thread
I've long wished for a single episode after a character returns from the dead when they have to explain their return to the DMV and credit card agencies. "Let's see here Mrs. Lewis, you came back on an Amish farm, and now you need an increase in your line of credit so that you can buy some skirts that are above the knee..." "OK, Mrs. Spaulding, I see that you'd like to change your name from Lorelei Hills to Beth Raines because you had amnesia after being held hostage by an illegitimate prince on the same Caribbean island where Mrs Lewis once ruled?

Final 3 Soaps On the Air: What's Next?
This thread made me wonder WEHT Brian Frons? Well, a quick check of his LinkedIn revealed that he is adjunct professor at UCLA Anderson School of Management (not even an assistant professor which is kind of disrespectful for a guy with his experience in corporate management). He uses his LinkedIn with the expertise of a guy who has no other social media platforms. Two weeks ago he congratulated a former student on a real estate project as well as one who got a promotion at a video game company. He also runs Frons Consulting LLC, but a quick search shows no transactions for the past year. So, if anyone was wondering if Ken Corday sought consultation before the move to Peacock, at least we know he didn't ask Brian.

Anne Heche hospitalized with severe burns from car accident
The recovery news is not good today. I've not seen any comment from the podcasters that were drinking with her prior to the incident. Has anyone else? https://pagesix.com/2022/08/08/anne-heche-in-critical-condition-in-a-coma-following-car-crash/

Will you use the proceeds to start your own classic soap streaming service, or just retire to that deserted island where Henry and Vienna hung out? Trust me don't go to Montega, I've heard the food is terrible, and half the population claims to be the illegitimate heirs of Lucinda Walsh.

Bold promo week of August 8th: Sheila Shocker
At this point we all know how to translate a soap script "I'll love you forever" = the character is dead by the end of the episode "You'll never have children" = until the actress gets pregnant in real ife and "She's gone forever" = see ya on Friday's episode

Bravo's The Real Housewives of....
Theresa's gown is a real-life "what you ordered vs. what you got" situation given the designer's sketch from the NY Post also poor Dolores, always the bridesmaid, never the bride, and without the dignity of being invited to the engagement party. I wonder if Jennifer's brother the jeweler gave them the earrings?

But, you'd better act quickly, unlike the books which sell for hundreds of dollars, DVD players are being quickly obsolete DVD sales have fallen more than 70% between 2011 and 2021, CNBC reported, and now make up less than 10% of the total movie market. DVD/Blu-ray Disc player use remains in decline, with household penetration dropping to 57% in the first quarter of 2020 from 73% at the end of 2017, according to data from Nielsen.

RIP: In Memoriam Thread
Fango is saddened to learn of the passing of Clu Gulager, who amassed over 150 credits in film and TV. Horror fans will remember him best in RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2, and the FEAST films. Our condolences to his family, friends, and many fans. I was struggling to recall his soap connection, because his name is so memorable. But then I looked it up and recalled that he was Chase Gioberti in The Vintage Years, the unaired pilot that was developed into Falcon Crest.

The Media/Journalism Thread
One other truly astounding revelation about Alex Jones is that he's 48. He is seven years younger than me, but if you told me he was 68, I would have totally believed it. He was hacking up a lung on the witness stand, his neck is too big to wear a tie, and his complexion is ruddier than a summer tomato. Hatemongering must really age a person...

DAYS OF OUR LIVES Moves to Peacock From NBC on September 12
Currently, the confines of network programming demand that soaps build to an exciting moment before every commercial, at the end of every episode, with special considerations for Friday and sweeps. Streaming is obviously free of those constraints. So, I wonder how that will effect pacing and storytelling? So, many of elements of what defines a soap were developed in order to sell household products that I don't know what a serialized story with no ending would look like on a streaming platform where everyone consumes it differently? Imagine a twenty year old college student in 2025 with a free afternoon and their parent's Peacock password in college. Where would they start watching? How would they know the characters? It doesn't feel like something you would choose to jump into; especially 60 years into the story...

DAYS OF OUR LIVES Moves to Peacock From NBC on September 12
To the lay ear it sounds like a statement that leaves a lot of room for interpretation, especially because it is not from an official production source like Sony, NBC, or Corday. He could mean every episode that is going to air on Peacock from 9/12 moving forward will be available, or every episode that is currently on Peacock will remain available. But, it seems unlikely that he means 57 years of episodes will be stored on Peacock, or that they'd hire a digital archive team to edit that amount of material in order to make it suitable for streaming. Most streaming services are not capable of the bandwidth to store that amount of data which is why Netflix and Hulu trade out their content monthly. Occam's Razor suggest we accept the simplest theory first over more complex explanations of unknown phenomena. So, my bet is that Mr McKinsey believes that all current episodes set to stream on Peacock will remain on the service so that people can binge them rather than only having the past 3-4 episodes available to watch at one time. I would further predict that after an initial period of releasing episodes daily they will switch to uploading 5 at a time, because why bother with the structure of a weekly cliffhanger Friday when fans could watch any number of episodes at any time.

Will you pay $1.99 for Peacock? Update!!! Blockbuster sale!!! Peacock at just $1.99 a month!!
I agree 1000%. I want to passively interact with TV. I don't need another job as a VP of scheduling and development.

The Media/Journalism Thread
BREAKING: Alex Jones ordered to pay $45.2 million in punitive damages to the family of a Sandy Hook massacre victim. I thought the most intriguing argument from today's expert witness, who was a forensic economist, was that Jones not only owns his network, but there's also no sponsor because he manufacturers all of the paranoid bs products that he sells. So, he's not spewing conspiracies out of an insane paranoia. He is trying to foment anxiety in his audience so that they buy his brand of barrels of food for their bunkers. It is always eye-opening when the con artist doesn't believe one word of what they're saying, it is just all an effort to extract cash from disenfranchised people. The major hypocrisy was exposed today when two hours before he pleaded with his audience to spend more money because the forces of evil were trying to bankrupt him, it was revealed that he was syphoning $11,000.00 a day to off shore accounts while claiming to be broke.

Santa Barbara Discussion Thread
I think Ted is the most underwritten of the Capwell kids. We know Eden's motive is to be CC's favorite and how that causes problems in her romantic relationships. We know Kelly is constantly treated like a princess who isn't considered as strong willed as Eden and the conflicts that ensue from that dynamic. We know Mason is constantly angry about feeling neglected in favor of his father's second family. But, Ted is just Ted. Greg could have been an excellent foil for Ted. A young man with more in common with CC and therefore able to establish closer bonds. There are hints of that direction in the summer that Greg lived in the mansion. But then Greg disappears and Ted is recast, but there's still so little to the characterization that he is just used as placeholder for stories that serve Warren and Sawyer. And, most importantly, there's never any resolution with either CC or Sophia for whatever feelings he had about being the youngest kid to be abandoned by his mother. For the record, Paul Johansonn demonstrated that he was capable of playing more complex characters on One Tree Hill, and I recall a completely unhinged podcast interview that he once gave where he attempted to charm the hosts by admitting to not wearing underwear. So, there may have been potential that was not well served by the production.

Agreed, I also ate it up with a spoon when Angela's shifts into a villain and they use it as an opportunity to resolve Thorne shooting Ridge.

It is amusing that as I get older I recall hearing the same arguments about the value of entertainment over and over again, until we all just get used to it. When cable tv came out everyone yelled about paying money to watch commercials. When Howard Stern went to Sirius everyone squawked about paying to listen to the radio in your car. When movies charged a premium for big releases everyone said that they'd never pay more than ten bucks to watch a movie. What I will lament is the loss of mass media when 30% of the daytime audience watched the same show. Gone are the days when everyone knew Erica Kane or Luke Spencer because less than 1% of the population can watch a show and it is considered a hit. It reduces the opportunities to discuss entertainment with people from a variety of backgrounds like the community that has been found on these boards.

All My Children Tribute Thread
amcfantok has been posting 1984 on tiktok, and it's very bad. The clear exception is Jane Elliot as Cynthia. I am particularly taken with Ellen and Daisy's frustration that every time they think that they have enough evidence to call Cynthia out, she plays on Palmer's heartstrings until he relents. In one memorable episode Cynthia goes to The Chateau for lunch without any money and she tries to use Palmer's line of credit. Ellen humiliates her by offering to either call Palmer or allow Cynthia to wash dishes to pay for her lunch (with wine the total was a whopping $22). Cynthia's companion pays, and then she goes home and gets Palmer to call The Chateau to add the Prestons to his charge account. Then, Andrew comes in and humiliates Ellen by treating her like an underling and charging his meal to Palmer. Palmer never seems dumb for believing Cynthia, she just knows how to manipulate his desire to establish a relationship with his newfound son Ross. Jane Elliot is also mature enough that you never think twice about how she's trying to sleep with her ex-husband's father. On the other hand, the recast Nina is far too green to be thrust into this story with Zach. Recast Liza is missing all of her legendary bite. Fake Jenny is so transparent in her scheming that she make Myrtle seem like a fool for not seeing right through her. Greg and Cliff are indistinguishable as good guys who are so easily mislead that one wonders why they aren't giving half of their salary to invest in a three card monty scheme. Donna lacks the charisma to understand why Ross and Tom are constantly trying to appease her. Phoebe, Tad, and Erica are in their prime as comedic characters, although it gets a little too silly. Hugo Napier's Mike Roy and his inexplicable insistence on wearing sunglasses indoors makes him a terrible romantic partner. And we're told to dislike Dotty for pursuing Tad, but she seems to be a better match than dowdy Miss Hillary, who didn't seem to inherit any of Langley's charm, yet calls him "father" two seconds after their meeting. I was never entertained by the latter years of AMC when Kendell was pining for Zach Slater, but I forgot what a steep fall in quality it was from Jenny and Jessie's summer in New York to the dreck of 1984 and Zach Grayson.
