ARTICLE: Sean Blakemore Among Several New Cast Members Announced for Season 2 of Freeform’s ‘Cruel Summer’
When Sean Blakemore announced in February that he would be leaving ABC’s “General Hospital,” citing “other obligations” as the reason, many wondered what would be next for the Daytime Emmy Award-winning actor. Turns out he has been cast as a lead in the second season of Freeform’s “Cruel Summer” which debuted last year and is now being billed as an anthology series beginning with its second season, premiering later this year on the network. In Season 2, “Cruel Summer” will be set in an idyllic waterfront town in the Pacific Northwest and will follow the rise and fall of an intense teenage friendship. Approaching the story from three different timelines surrounding Y2K, the season twists and turns as it tracks the early friendship between Megan (Sadie Stanley), Isabella (Eloise Payet) and Megan’s best friend Luke (Griffin Gluck), the love triangle that blossomed, and the mystery that would impact all of their lives going forward. Blakemore will play Sheriff Myer, an old-fashioned law-and-order type, under pressure to solve the first major crime in Chatham. Also starring in the series will be KaDee Strickland (“Private Practice”) as Debbie, Megan’s hardworking single mom who thinks hosting Isabella will open Megan’s eyes to a bigger world than their small town. Lisa Yamada (“Little Fires Everywhere”) is Parker, a popular musician who becomes more cynical as the world takes a dark turn around her. Paul Adelstein (“True Story”) will recur as Steve Chambers, Luke’s high-profile dad, whose influence in town is far-reaching. “Cruel Summer” comes from studio eOne and was created by Bert V. Royal. Elle Triedman serves as showrunner. Executive producers include Triedman, Bill Purple, Tia Napolitano, and Iron Ocean Productions’ Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple. The series is distributed internationally by eOne. The first season of “Cruel Summer” was a critical and ratings hit, making it Freeform’s most-watched series in network history. ARTICLE: CNN+ to Shut Down, Service Had Upwards of 150,000 Subscribers
Less than a month into its launch, Warner Bros. Discovery announced today that it is shutting down CNN+, the streaming subscription service that was supposed to enhance the cable news network’s offerings with live, on-demand and interactive programming, including a whole new way to engage journalism and storytelling together. At a monthly cost of $5.99, early adopters who signed up within the first four weeks after the March 29 launch would have access to CNN+ at a “Deal of a Lifetime” price offer, or 50% off the monthly plan – for life – as long as they remain subscribers. With the service shutting down effective April 30, it’s unclear what value those subscribers will be getting now, or whether refunds will be provided to those eligible. “This decision is in line with WBD’s broader direct-to-consumer strategy,” said Chris Licht, the incoming CEO of CNN, in a statement to Variety, which first reported the news. “In a complex streaming market, consumers want simplicity and an all-in service, which provides a better experience and more value than stand-alone offerings.” He added, “We have very exciting opportunities ahead in the streaming space and CNN, one of the world’s premier reputational assets, will play an important role there.’’ CNN plans to put more of its focus on CNN Digital, with Licht stating the end of CNN+ was not a reflection of the quality of the service while thanking those who helped develop and curate content for the soon-to-be-defunct streamer. “We appreciate all of the work, ambition and creativity that went into building CNN+, an organization with terrific talent and compelling programming. But our customers and CNN will be best served with a simpler streaming choice,” he said. Reportedly, CNN+ was able to capture 100,000 to 150,000 subscribers in its first few weeks with such programs as “5 Things” and “Reliable Sources Daily” being the standout performers. According to Deadline, Andrew Morse will leave the company with the end of CNN+. He was in charge of the service and was the Chief Digital Officer at CNN. Alex MacCallum, CNN Worldwide, Head of Product/General Manager CNN+, will lead CNN Digital. ARTICLE: Vanessa Mathison to Appear on ‘General Hospital’
Vanessa Mathison, the real-life wife of actor Cameron Mathison, will make her acting debut on the Thursday, April 21 episode of ABC’s “General Hospital.” She’ll be playing the role of Mia opposite her husband, who plays Drew Cain on the daytime drama series. Mia is described as an executive coach who meets with Drew. “I hope you check it out and show her some love,” said the “GH” star of his wife on Instagram as he shared a series of behind-the-scenes photos from the day she filmed, including a video of her stepping onto the set and starting her acting journey. “I have to say… [executive producer] Frank Valentini made the character of Drew a reality for me, and now he has made Vanessa’s dream come true as well,” noted Mathison of his wife. “Vanessa has been a ‘GH’ fan her whole life! When I met her I was Ryan on ‘All My Children’ and she had no idea who I was… she only watched ‘GH’ (yes, especially you @jackwagnerofficial). Look at you now @vanessa.mathison So thank you Frank, and thank you to every single cast and crew that was so kind to Vanessa on her big day. I love you guys.” “I did it! I did it!” said an ecstatic Mathison after filming her scenes. “It was so amazing, so surreal. So exciting, I can’t believe it,” she added when her husband asked about her experience. He chimed in, saying, “Now I’m no longer the biggest soap star in our family.” “General Hospital” marks Vanessa Mathison’s acting debut. ARTICLE: ‘The Young and the Restless’ Casts Newcomer Allison Lanier in the Role of Summer Newman
Two months since it was revealed that the role of Summer Newman was being recast, “The Young and the Restless” has officially hired daytime newcomer Allison Lanier who will make her on-screen debut later next month on the drama series. She takes over the role last played by Hunter King (“Life in Pieces,” “Hollywood Heights”). Photo by Johnny Vy/CBS Word of Lanier’s casting comes just as Summer’s better half, Kyle Abbott, is set to return to Genoa City beginning Monday, April 25 with Michael Mealor reprising the role. Kyle’s return is centered on the revelation that his long believed to be dead mother, Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters), is actually alive and that she faked her death years earlier despite a lengthy investigation by the GCPD to determine who killed her as her death had been ruled a homicide at the time. The culprit ended up being Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) who was later exonerated for the crime as she was able to prove she “killed” Diane in self-defense. In recent episodes, Diane explained she faked her death in order to escape from her actions during that period. At the time, the role of Diane was played by Maura West (now Ava Jerome on “General Hospital”). On the Monday, April 18 episode of “The Talk,” Peter Bergman who plays Jack Abbott, Kyle’s father, teased “[Kyle] and I are probably not going to see eye to eye on the best way to handle this thing [referring to Diane]. I think there is going to be a lot of tension there.” Thankfully with Summer presumably by his side, Kyle should be able to figure out the best way to handle this life-changing situation stronger than ever before. Prior to making her broadcast television debut as Summer on “Y&R,” Lanier previously recurred in the Amazon Original series “Red Oaks,” playing the role of Annabelle in six episodes of the series. She was also featured in “It Happened in L.A.,” an official selection screened at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017. More recently, the actress appeared in the indie films “Mia” and “Fish Bones.” In addition to acting, Lanier is also an artist who most recently resided in Brooklyn, New York before relocating to Los Angeles. You can follow her on Instagram @allisonvlanier. ARTICLE: Daytime Broadcast Ratings for the Week of April 11-15, 2022
For the week of April 11-15, 2022, CBS’ “The Bold and the Beautiful” (3.068 million) ranked third in both Women 18-49 and Women 25-54 rating, tied with “The Young and the Restless” (3.423 million) and “TODAY 3rd Hour” (1.981 million) in both demographics. “The View” (2.353 million) also tied for third place in Women 18-49 rating. Compared to its performance one week earlier, the half-hour soap was down -111,000 viewers week-to-week while losing the least amount of viewers across daytime broadcast compared to the show’s performance in 2020, down just -115,000 viewers. Both half hours of “Let’s Make a Deal” (2.517 million/2.912 million) gained viewers week-to-week, more than any other daytime broadcast series, with an average of +132,000 more viewers for each half-hour compared to one week earlier. “Days of our Lives” (1.664 million) added +73,000 week-to-week and “The Talk” (1.486 million) gained +57,000 viewers. Losing the least amount of viewers week-to-week was “General Hospital” (2.109 million), down just -8,000 viewers compared to one week earlier. Compared to its performance in 2020, “GH” is down -328,000 viewers, the second smallest drop across daytime broadcast, and behind only “B&B.” “TODAY with Hoda & Jenna” (1.456 million) ranked last in Total Viewers, falling below both “The Talk” and “GMA3: What You Need to Know” (1.579 million). The third hour of “Good Morning America” tied “The Talk” for last place in Women 18-49, each with a 0.2 rating, and ranked last overall in Women 25-54 with a 0.3 rating in the demo. Since its 2020 debut, the series is down significantly from where it started, albeit its losses compared to two years earlier are nothing compared to the significant audience erosion experienced by both half hours of “The Price is Right” (4.064 million/4.611 million), the aforementioned “Let’s Make a Deal,” and both “TODAY 3rd Hour” and “TODAY with Hoda & Jenna.” What follows is a breakdown of how the daytime broadcast shows performed during the week of April 11-15, 2022 in Women 18-49 rating, Women 25-54 rating, Households and Total Viewers, including a look at their comparable performance in 2020 and 2021 (where available). A closer look at the daytime soaps, including their daily performance in the demos, will be posted soon. Notes: Starting with this week’s report, we will no longer be sharing unrounded figures for the Women 18-49 and Women 25-54 demographics. All data points, with the exception of Total Viewers, will be rounded up/down to the nearest tenth. Viewing levels were hitting multi-year highs in 2020 during the initial shutdown of the country due to COVID-19. Year-to-year comparisons (2022 vs 2021) among Households and Total Viewers are currently unavailable due to a gap in data being shared with Soap Opera Network one year earlier. Comparable 2020 figures for “GMA3: What Need to Know” are based on the performance of “Pandemic: What You Need to Know.” The current iteration was rebranded effective June 2020. Y&R and B&B April (and late March) spoilers
I'm joking. I'm not implying the show is celebrating its anniversary anytime soon (that'll happen next year March). The 50th anniversary of one show is bigger than the 35th anniversary of another. Obviously, with COVID still being a factor, the more elaborate anniversary coverage is not possible yet but don't believe for a minute that B&B won't go big (bigger) for its 40th (when it reaches that number in 2027).

Y&R and B&B April (and late March) spoilers
The show debuted in the 70s and is currently in its 50th season (as of March 26, 2022). Sorry, that's the only way I could make it make sense.

ARTICLE: ‘The Young and the Restless’: Michael Mealor Return Date Revealed
On the Monday, April 18 episode of “The Talk,” actors Susan Walters and Peter Bergman from “The Young and the Restless” appeared, talking about the recent revelation of Diane Jenkins (played by Walters) being alive. In addition to Walters and Bergman sharing some tidbits about what’s to come and how the storyline came about, co-host Natalie Morales let it slip that fans can expect to see Michael Mealor back as Kyle Abbott, son of Diane and Jack Abbott (Bergman), beginning Monday, April 25. When Morales asked how the story will play out with Kyle learning his mother is alive, Bergman responded, saying, “I think that is probably central to my joy in Susan coming back. The fellow that plays my son, Michael Mealor, is a brilliant young actor, he’s terrific! He and I are probably not going to see eye to eye on the best way to handle this thing (referring to Diane). I think there is going to be a lot of tension there.” During Bergman’s comments, Morales said, “He’s back on Monday, I hear, right?” referring to the Monday, April 25 episode of “The Young and the Restless.” Until today’s appearance on “The Talk,” Mealor’s return date had not been officially announced. Last month, it was revealed Mealor had signed a long-term contract with the daytime drama series after leaving the series last August. “Of course, I’ll always be back when they call,” Mealor told to Digest last year, citing his love for the show and working with the people he’s worked alongside all these years. Making his “Y&R” debut in 2018, Mealor most recently appeared in an episode of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” for FXX. Watch more from Bergman and Walters’ appearance on “The Talk” below. Y&R and B&B April (and late March) spoilers
Oddly, even though I generally get a heads up of who will be appearing on The Talk days before they appear, neither show promotes the appearance until hours before. A day before if we're lucky. I inquired about this and they really want to put the snooze button on promoting it. I guess it works out for them that way.

ARTICLE: ‘The Talk’ Renewed for Season 13 with All Current Co-Hosts Returning
While the show’s current 12th season has performed sluggishly in the ratings, often ranking last in both Women 18-49 and Women 25-54, CBS’ “The Talk” will be back for a 13th season, the network announced during today’s live broadcast of the series. “The producers are just telling me there is some breaking news,” shared co-host Natalie Morales who joined the panel in October 2021. “This is just coming in right now, ‘The Talk’ has been renewed for Season 13.” Following audience cheers and drops of virtual confetti onto the show’s set, Akbar Gbajabiamila said, “That was crazy, this feels so good.” Meanwhile, Jerry O’Connell joked, “Now I know why all our bosses showed up today.” Gbajabiamila joined the panel in early September 2021, just days before the show’s current season premiered. He became the show’s second-ever male co-host following O’Connell’s joining as the first male co-host in July 2021. In addition to the show’s renewal, all five co-hosts will be returning, including the aforementioned Morales, Gbajabiamila, O’Connell, Amanda Kloots and Sheryl Underwood. Kloots joined the panel in January 2021 and Underwood has been with the show since the show’s second season. In early March it was announced that Underwood would be staying at “The Talk” for at least three more seasons (bringing the show to season 15), in addition to signing a two-year first-look development deal with CBS Studios. Akbar Gbajabiamila, Amanda Kloots, Sheryl Underwood, Jerry O’Connell and Natalie Morales (“The Talk”) Courtesy of WATCH Magazine Behind the scenes, executive producers Heather Gray and Kristin Matthews will also be back. Today’s renewal for “The Talk” came earlier than last year’s, showing a vote of confidence from the network now that all decks are steadily in place moving forward. Last June, when announcing the show’s then 12th season pickup, the talk show had been down two co-hosts following the controversial departure of Sharon Osbourne and the ongoing hiatus of Carrie Ann Inaba. In February, “The Talk” hit a season high in Total Viewers with the show’s best performance since April 2020 when it hit 1.662 million viewers. The show is one of few bubble talk shows this season to get another season. Nearly a dozen other shows, particularly those airing in national syndication, have been canceled and won’t be returning next season, including “The Wendy Williams Show,” “The Nick Cannon Show,” “Maury,” “The Good Dish,” and “Dr. Oz,” among others. Season 12 of “The Talk” will remain in production through August 5, 2022. Since its debut in October 2010, the show has won 14 Daytime Emmy Awards (Outstanding Talk Show Entertainment 2016, 2018; writing 2015; host 2017) out of 58 nominations. The 13th season of “The Talk” is expected to premiere sometime in early September 2022. Watch the pickup announcement from today’s episode of “The Talk” below. ARTICLE: Lisa LoCicero to Star in L.A. Revival of the Tony Award-Winning Play, ‘God of Carnage’
Lisa LoCicero (“General Hospital”) will be starring in the Los Angeles revival of Yasmina Reza’s scathing, Tony Award-winning comedy “God of Carnage.” Scheduled for a limited three-week run at the Odyssey Theatre starting Friday, May 13 and running through Sunday, May 29, the cast also includes Matthew Downs (“Station 19” and “9-1-1: Lone Star”), Jack Esformes (“Under a Black Cloud”) and Leilani Smith. Directed by Peter Allas, the story is inspired by a real event that takes place in real-time over the course of 90 minutes after two 11-year-old boys have a playground fight. Henry’s parents invite Benjamin’s mother and father over for cocktails, hoping to discuss the situation civilly. But the veneer of polite society quickly falls away, and the evening deteriorates into an intense and darkly funny train wreck of finger-pointing, name-calling, tantrums and tears. “When my daughter was at Roosevelt Elementary in Santa Monica, the parents’ behavior was always far worse than that of the kids,” said Allas of his experience in dealing with situations as depicted in the production. “This play is totally on the money. I remember being at one PTA meeting about school lunches, and I couldn’t believe what was going on.” Translated by playwright/screenwriter Christopher Hampton, “God of Carnage” nabbed both London’s Olivier Award for Best Comedy and Broadway’s Tony Award for Best Play. It hasn’t been seen locally since its 2011 run at the Ahmanson. Performances of “God of Carnage” take place Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m., May 13 through May 29. There will be one preview performance on Thursday, May 12 at 8 p.m. All tickets are $45, except the preview, which is $30. The Odyssey Theatre is located at 2055 S. Sepulveda Blvd., West Los Angeles, 90025. Parking is $5 in the onsite lot. For reservations and information, call (310) 477-2055, ext 2, or visit Onstage411.com/Carnage. ARTICLE: CBS Orders Three New Holiday-Themed Original Movies, Including ‘Fit for Christmas’ Starring ‘The Talk’s Amanda Kloots
“The Talk” co-host Amanda Kloots will executive produce and star in “Fit for Christmas,” one of three new original holiday movies set to air in December 2022 as part of CBS’ renewed focus on original holiday television movies. From writer and executive producer Anna White (“Christmas Wonderland”), “Fit For Christmas” tells the tale of Audrey, an enthusiastic Christmas-obsessed fitness instructor at a beloved, financially beleaguered community center in quaint Mistletoe, Mont., who begins a holiday romance with a charming, mysterious businessman, complicating his plans to turn the center into a more financially profitable resort property. The movie will be produced by Brad Krevoy’s Motion Picture Corporation of America. “Watch out! I’m making a Christmas movie for 2022!” commented Kloots on Twitter following the announcement of her new movie. Another holiday movie coming to CBS is “When Christmas Was Young,” a Nashville music-themed movie from a script by screenwriter and bestselling novelist Robert Tate Miller (“Hope at Christmas,” Forever Christmas). The story follows a headstrong music manager in desperate need of a hit song for his last remaining client, who finds himself falling for a gifted singer-songwriter with abandoned dreams of making it big, as he attempts to secure the rights to a Christmas song she wrote years ago. Tom Mazza, David Calvert-Jones and Karen Glass (Everywhere Studios) will executive produce, together with executive producers Shawn Williamson and Jamie Goehring for Lighthouse Pictures. Award-winning singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow will also executive produce and write the title song for the movie. In a follow-up to last season’s CBS Original movie “A Christmas Proposal,” as well as “A Kiss Before Christmas,” Mark Amato is writing “Must Love Christmas.” In it, a renowned romance novelist famous for her Christmas-themed books finds herself snowbound in the charming town of Cranberry Falls, where she unexpectedly becomes involved in a love triangle between her childhood crush and a reporter determined to interview her to save his dying magazine. The movie will be produced by Brad Krevoy’s Motion Picture Corporation of America. In December 2021, CBS aired its first original holiday television movies since 2012 with “Christmas Takes Flight” and the aforementioned “A Christmas Proposal.” The three new CBS Original movies join the network’s holiday programming slate, which includes family favorites like The Thanksgiving Day Parade on CBS and the annual broadcasts of beloved animated classics like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Frosty the Snowman.” Additional information about the CBS Original movies will be announced in the coming months. ARTICLE: Daytime Broadcast Ratings for the Week of April 4-8, 2022
The week of April 4-8, 2022 saw “The Bold and the Beautiful” (3.179 million) hit a new season high in Total Viewers and rank third in the Women 18-49 rating, topping “TODAY 3rd Hour” (2.009 million) and “The Young and the Restless” (3.526 million) in the demo. “General Hospital” (2.117 million) hit a new series low in Women 18-49 rating while “Days of our Lives” (1.591 million) ranked last overall among all daytime broadcast shows in the demo. In fact, “DAYS” attracted its lowest overall audience since the week of November 1-5, 2021. For the week, every daytime broadcast series fell in Total Viewers with the exception of “B&B.” The half-hour soap bucked the trend and increased week to week, up +219,000 viewers, and the second consecutive week in which the show had increases in excess of +200,000 viewers. The soap ranked fourth among the 13 daytime broadcast shows in every category except for Women 18-49 where it ranked third. With a 0.24 rating in Women 18-49, “GH” fell hard week to week to rank 10th, barely edging “GMA3: What You Need to Know” (1.654 million) and “The Talk” (1.429 million) which tied for 11th place in the key demo, each with a 0.22 rating. “DAYS” had an even steeper fall, dropping to a 0.21 rating in the demo marking a new season-low for the soap and the first time the soap has ranked last in the demo all season. “The Talk” beat both “GMA3” and “DAYS” for the first time this season in Women 25-54 rating despite only airing three episodes for the week. The show did not air on Tuesday, April 5 or Wednesday, April 6 due to CBS Sports coverage of the “UEFA Champions League” games while “B&B,” “Y&R” and both half hours of “Let’s Make a Deal” (2.416 million/2.748 million) were preempted on the West Coast on the aforementioned dates. After hitting a new season-high one week earlier, “The View” (2.415 million) came back down to earth with a loss of -311,000 viewers week to week. The talk show still managed to rate as ABC’s highest-rated and most-watched daytime series for the second week in a row among viewers and the key demos, however. What follows is a breakdown of how the daytime broadcast shows performed during the week of April 4-8, 2022 in Women 18-49 rating, Women 25-54 rating, Households and Total Viewers, including a look at their comparable performance in 2020 and 2021 (where available). A closer look at the daytime soaps, including their daily performance in the demos, will be posted soon. Note: Viewing levels were hitting multi-year highs in 2020 during the initial shutdown of the country due to COVID-19. Year to Year comparisons among Households and Total Viewers are currently unavailable due to a gap in data being shared with Soap Opera Network one year earlier. Comparable 2020 figures for “GMA3: What Need to Know” are based on the performance of “Pandemic: What You Need to Know.” The current iteration was rebranded effective June 2020. Demos for “The Talk” during the comparable week last year are based on a one day average only (Tuesday, April 6, 2021). YR: EW ranks the 30 best characters from the show
I questioned it the minute I saw Lynette Rice's name (she's now at Deadline). Then I saw the date. Phew. I'm not crazy. At first I was like, EW has become one of those listicle sites which I hate.
