I am surprised that the numbers are down. Wasn't this the week of the snowstorm? Or am I mixing up the weeks?

Y&R's 18 to 49 women demo is holding strong. Seems like Days has taken over the 2nd place in that demo from GH. GH's 18 to 49 women demo isn't going up despite the Franco and the Lucky/Liz/Nik promos.

AMC's move to the new studios is well timed given those bad demos.

ATWT's demos are up yet they went down in HHs and Viewers...ugh...ATWT is still #5 in Total Viewers ahead of GH and OLTL. When was the last time ATWT was ahead of OLTL and AMC in the 18-49 demos?? Glad to see AMC in the gutter in the 18-49 demos. It couldnt happen to a suckier show!!

World Turns has pulled up to #5, beating the almighty Franco-infused GH in total viewers. The demos have even shifted upwards, beating AMC and OLTL. I'm starting to wonder if CBS knew that things were about to get better and just pulled the plug while they still had a chance. I still find it strange that they cancelled ATWT nine months early. Just realized, World Turns now has more 18-49 year old viewers than it does old cat ladies.

I am happy for Days even though total viewers are down, great to see them move up in the demos. Good for them. And their total viewers are still up from last year.

Y&R deserves the drop as do AMC and GH. I just keep wondering if ATWT was promoted better by CBS if it would have mattered.

Once CBS cancelled GL...you knew ATWT was a goner no matter what. I read where CBS was excited about a 5% increase in GL timeslot with LMAD. I am sure that also helped them axe ATWT as fast as they could.

But I am glad ATWT is beating AMC, OLTL and GH in different demos and viewers. It proves viewers didnt leave after hearing the cancellation news. If ATWT can start rolling a bit they can even pass awful AMC in total viewers. I don't get the appeal in AMC. To think that show is higher than OLTL is criminal.

It warms my heart to see viewers not get sucked into that Franco nonsense on GH. Smart. That along with the disgusting Liz/Lucky/Nik crap and the Dante nonsense are the big stories. Time to cut some big salaries over at GH. How about a Susan Lucci like salary cut for Burton or Bernard.

Franco = bust. I wonder if he'd picked Y&R or Days would they have done the same thing GH did or worse.

I am so disappointed in GH going down again. I really dont get it. I know a lot of people dont like Guza, and neither do I, but I think that theshow is still good.

I take all the ratings with a grain of salt, because all soaps go up and down. I mean, look at AMC. It was at like 6 for at year, and now it is having a ratings surge. And last year GH was at like 3. Same with DAYs. I think soaps will always go up and down, but it really does make me worried considering all the cancel-happy network workers out there.

I still don't think GH is in any danger though. It still does well in the 18-49 demo. I mean it is number two in that for the entire season viewers, and three in the ratings. So I dont think GH is a soap to worry about. OLTL...Idk. I mean while AMC and GH continue to fluctuate up and down, OLTL is consistently at the bottom. It does sometimes rise to number 6, but the fact of the matter is, pretty soon there will be only six.

I think CBS did this unpurpose. They announced that they are cancelling the show, and then the ratings spike. If the show keeps these ratings for the next few months, CBS is going to see that all they had to do was scare fans who were lazy about watching the show. Now that all those fans who didnt watch the show for a while, or only watched it every week or two, have tuned back in and got involved in the current stories, the ratings are going to improve. I think CBS planned it, but in the long run if they did, and they end up renewing the show, it is only going to piss viewers off in the end, and put them right back at the bottom.

So I hope that GH and OLTL goes up, and I hope ATWT does good too. I actually dont want any soap to go down, because I dont even see them as competitors. I mean if one soap falls to the bottom, it gets cancelled, that just means there will be another soap at the bottom and that one will get cancelled and so on and so on until there just arent any soap operas left. I am honestly just hopiing that they all stabalize in 2010, and we can go another 5 years at the minimum before another one goes.

The failure of the Franco stint to generate ratings despite all the costly promotion is telling. Soap fans may pick and choose the stunt events that they like and it is the story and not only the characters involved.

Steve Burton said that everyone at GH took pay cuts so that has already happened. GH should cut back more by giving its highest paid actors less airtime. The show would benefit.

I've never understood why the show thought James Franco was so iconic that he would have any fans tuning in to see him. Even if he does have a lot of fans, it's for work which is night and day from GH. How many of them would want to sit through endless violence and ugliness and glorification of such?

I've heard more and more complaints about this story than I have compliments. Many of the fans who had been looking forward to seeing Jason and Sam back together, and who had enjoyed the first few months of their reunion, are now complaining about sitting through months of "Who is Franco? Why would he dress up like a homeless man?" Spixie fans hate this storyline too.

And then we have JJ's return, which is welcomed by having a very popular romance he was involved in being reduced to Liz dreaming about screwing his brother on a craps table, and even better, with her brutal rape being referred to as sex and being used to try to justify her relationship with Nikolas.

The show has driven viewers away for years. Viewers have been patient, they've tried to return with each new stunt or snazzy promo campaign, but it always ends up being the same old stuff. Viewers have been trained to not tune back in.

    • Thanks! I've kept thinking that he carried some negatives.  Patrick Mulcahey told a story about a scene being written where a helicopter swooped down upon a group of people & the P&G rep tried to sell them on the idea of it not being a helicopter, but a blue luxury sedan. Yeah, NOT.
    • I've never thought about this. I'm curious about what made you think to pose it as a question. I am strong on AW & weak on OLTL.  Linda Dano & Stephen Schnetzer both acted on OLTL first & then were lifetime characters on AW. Both shows had Agnes Nixon.  Irna Phillips had two main proteges: Agnes Nixon & Bill Bell. Irna was part of the creation of 2 soaps that in the 1970s were in grave danger of very early cancellation. Agnes Nixon saved AW & Bill Bell saved DAYS OF OUR LIVES.  After being HW at AW Agnes created OLTL, right? Her first ABC tenure, where before she had been a P&G writer, 1st GL & then AW. (Do I have that chronology correct?) Both AW & OLTL had very high points in terms of ratings, awards, success & also very low points where they struggled. At times OLTL was considered "not as good" as AMC. At times AW was considered "not as good" as DAYS OF OUR LIVES. They share anything & everything that relates to being a New York City soap. I think they share that they didn't get the respect they deserved. Both had their female lead be the strongest character on the show & also that they were the unquestioned star of the show.  When AW's cancellation was announced, Angela Shapiro went to P&G & tried to buy AW to air on ABC. It is not known how she planned to schedule that but one theory was that she would air AW & OLTL both as half hour soaps, back to back, mid to late afternoon. P&G declined & then she tried to buy the character Felicia Gallant. No, again. Then she did what we all know too well & put Linda Dano as Rae on all the ABC soaps. I have dubbed that 'Shapiro's Folly'.  Honestly, I don't think that OLTL suffered from being "Bay City-fied" or AWfication. However, these are some [nitpick] parallels or similarities. Possibly they are of interest. Anyway, I've had fun with it.
    • Oh, wow. This explains why there is a scene in one of the 1987 episodes where Alan out of the blue brings up Rita to Ed! It always seemed incredibly out of place before now. For most of 1987 Alan was involved with Vanessa. Marland initially planned to have Rita and Vanessa become rivals over Ed. They ultimately decided Ed and Van were not a good pairing. While I was never convinced Van was in love with Alan, she could be very possessive, so the two of them fighting over him could have been very interesting.  If she had come back with a KID, after Maureen accepted Ed's baby with Claire.... SO MANY great possibilities here. Not to mention, if she had come back, MAYBE that would have kept Alan out of Reva's orbit. (I can dream, can't I?) My guess for why they didn't bring her back in 1989--Alan was being hustled off the canvas, plus after bringing back Zaslow and Garrett, they might not have been able to afford her. He complained a lot about Mike's romantic pairings. I seem to remember he also complained that he didn't get to do enough action scenes. I think he wanted to fly a helicopter in a scene and was miffed they had the stunt man do it. Which was probably done because of insurance reasons. In Locher Room interviews I can't recall anyone who worked with him who speaks of him fondly, while people will speak warmly about Chris Bernau and Tom O'Rourke. The best Elvera could do was mention he flirted with her mother during a set visit.
    • After listening to the songs that Michele Val Jean co-wrote for Deniece Williams ... (youtubes and info are a few posts upthread) . . . I wonder MVJ contributed to the music or the lyrics? What type of songs did MVJ's real-life girl group The Articulettes sing?  And what did Anita's fictional Articulettes sing?

    • Is there anything in print or fan lore or info about Don Stewart & temperament or behavior? Of course my brain could be playing tricks on me.
    • “On ERICA versus RACHEL, Erica was a very unique character. ... Rachel was a lower-class Erica, her mother was a cleaning woman, and her goals were not nearly stratospheric as Erica’s. Rachel just wanted to marry Russ or somebody with money. What Erica and Rachel have in common is they thought if they could get their dream, they’d be satisfied. But that dream has been very elusive.”– Agnes Nixon, Creator, ONE LIFE TO LIVE, ALL MY CHILDREN, and LOVING So my takeaway from this, plus knowing the characters, is that both Rachel & Erica schemed for acquisition. They wanted to acquire romance, husbands, prosperity, a kind of low-level fame or notoriety.  Am I correct in thinking that Carla schemed for safety, camouflage, to keep from getting caught & so for survival? Or did she also scheme for things similar to above?
