I'm actually shocked that I found this on YouTube. SNL materials usually never stay up on their site, and seeing as though NBC has only shown this performance once on national TV(and in a DVD of SNL Musical Performances), I'm shocked it hasn't been removed.

But I love this performance and the act of defiance at the end.

^ Thanks for that link bellcurve, Sinéad is amazing and I hate that her American career was over so quick, but I completly understand her actions against the church at the time, and I applaud her for it. The Dixie Chicks seem to have suffered the same fate as Sinéad. It's sad that free speech comes with a pricetag.

She is truly one of the greatest singer/songwriters in history, and I'm proud to be a fan.

Here's some more of her videos, If anyones interested?

I always thought that it would be cool if at the Daytime Emmys, they let a fan present an award or something, and I decided that if I was ever that fan, at the end of presenting the award, I would hold up a picture of Brian Frons and scream "fight the real evil" before tearing it in half.

The church is filled with corrupt, filthy, disgusting men. I wouldn't have risked my career for it the way she did, though. That was a dumb move to me. But was she right? Um, yeah. OBVIOUSLY.

I agree. And after that happened, I remember Frank Sinatra saying he wanted to kick her ass. So then 98 Rock in Baltimore did a parody where a Frank Sinatra impersonator sang to the tune of Nothing Compares 2U about beating her up.

Madonna also spoofed Sinead when she appeared on SNL later that year. She tore a picture of Joey Buttafuoco in half.

I am so glad that the church is wrong because people want to have morals and values that differ from people who chose other paths. Why is it so wrong that people believe in God, and life and love and redemption and the afterlife.

If you want those to ONLY see your side..how fair is that?

What she did was wrong. Her belief is one thing, to act like a moron...well that is her right too, but it was wrong.

There are wrong, crooked, nasty vile people in all walks of life. If you hated one group because of someone who was wrong who was associated with them....you would not like a single person.

Well, and I'm not an expert on this whole thing at all, but did she ever say that she hated Catholics? Did she say anything?

I mean, if, like everyone has said, she did it because of the corruption in the church, well....it's a fact. Oodles of dirty things go on in the church. Personally, I thought it was idiotic and just plain stupid for her to use a variety show as a platform for her to prop her beliefs. Write a fricken book, Sinead!

Well, I had no idea that the sex abuse was happening in such a public way back then. Of course, I was in second or third grade.

That said, I always just thought it was Sinead being anti-Catholic. After all, she didn't mention her reasons on the telecast. She just said "fight the real evil" or "fight the real enemy" or whatever, and then did the deed. I don't remember her reasons for it.

Thank God for Joe Pesci. He certainly righted that wrong.

Oh, but then young, impressionable children wouldn't be able to hear her hate speech.

I was eight or nine when that happened and I remember it like it was yesterday.

Clearly, O'Connor's hate speech filled its purpose for reaching the children of tomorrow.

I agree, kwing. And why rip a pic of the pope? Does she have proof he covered up? I've just read that "high-ranking church officials," which certainly doesn't single out the pope. She was wrong, if only for ASSUming. But I still think the action was a blanketed anti-Catholic act.

So your telling me that preists who molest young boys should be protected because they have "values that differ from people who chose other paths?"

She never said she hated the church or God or anyone else. She loved God and the church and that's why she wanted the child abuse scandal brought to the forefront of the media. She was a devout catholic and said she prayed to God every day that if he would help her out of the hell she was living as a child, she would spread his message and work for him always.
